    Deception

I looked into Gary’s eyes as he stood, glowering above me. For a moment, I felt a shiver of fear, but then he pulled me into an embrace, and sighed into the hollow of my neck. The fear immediately turned into a swarm of butterflies, beating their wings against my chest.

Okay, so sometimes I can be girly. Whatever.

Nigel pulled himself up from under the bed and began dusting himself off, muttering about dirt and germs and however would he get his sweater clean again. When he pulled a comb from his wallet – a comb, people – I practically ruptured something laughing my backside into a size five. Okay, size ten. This earned a glare from Mr. Prissy-pants.

I would dust myself off, if I were you, Justine. You are rather a mess, you know.

Figured as much. It’s not exactly sterile under there, but geez, Nige. Think about it. Everywhere is dirty and dusty unless you live in a vacuum.

Says the girl with garbage in her kitchen from 2005.

Actually, it was 2006, but I wasn’t going to dignify his snark with a reply. I snorted, but that doesn’t really count as a reply does it.

Meanwhile, Gary had found a sheet of wood to cover the window. I don’t know where he found it, nor do I really want to know. At least, I don’t think I want to know.

Where did you leave Isha? I asked, hoping he’d been able to get her to safety. She rescued us from Maya’s trap and may have lost her eye in the process. It was the least we could do for her.

"She’s in Sionnach hands now. They know she is… was, rather… close to Maya. They’ll either treat her now, or wait until she regains consciousness and question her before treatment. Maya must be stopped, and if someone loses an eye in the process…"

I shuddered. I hate eyes. It’s always been the eyes, with Maya. It took me years to realize I hadn’t actually scratched out my own, before I could see again. Coming back here, seeing Isha’s wound, it brought all the crazy back into me and I was scared I would lose myself again.

Nigel put his arm around me, and I shrugged it off. I knew he wouldn’t
