      Quick explanation on how the government causes harm even with good intentions

      Milton Friedman was a great voice for economics and government interference, but one point that I think he’s somewhat wrong is when he talked about the draft for the military. The more I look at it, the more it seems as though at least undergoing basic training is a great way to integrate people into American culture and make them feel as though they are part of the country. Apart from that, Milton explained shortly that government isn’t helping more than hurting us.

      Well reasoned, and well written. Friedman points out that all...private and public enterprise has same motivation, but the strategies are different, thus leading to different results.

      Extremely brief, but despite having been written in 1993 it is still describing current problems, so I would recommend it to anybody that wants to know the viewpoints of Friedman.

      This is simply a transcript of a speech he gave. It also includes several questions and answers following the speech.For the well read Friedman fan or anyone who has watched some of the videos available on YouTube, this pamphlet offers nothing new. As an introductory read to Milton Friedman, it is useful. It is concise and well presented.

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    The major social problems of the United States—deteriorating education, lawlessness and crime, homelessness, the collapse of family values, the crisis in medical care—have been produced by well-intended actions of government. That is easy to document. The difficult task is understanding why government is the problem. The power of special interests arising from the concentrated benefits of most government actions and their dispersed costs is only part of the answer. A more fundamental part is the difference between the self-interest of individuals when they are engaged in the private sector and the self-interest of the same individuals when they are engaged in the government sector. The result is a government system that is no longer controlled by we, the people.
