Every Christmas, starting from November onwards, Vienna's historic streets fill with Christmas markets. Whenever this time comes around, I try to visit as many of them as I can and take plenty of photos. In December of 2012 though, I thought I'd make a series of blogposts out of them and talk about my experiences. I took many photos and wrote reviews of the different markets in and around Vienna (and wherever else I might come across one).
At the end of all the blogposts, there was still more to say and more photos to show. On top of that, my husband Mick – whom I dragged along to all the markets – had something to say about them as well. That’s how the idea for this book was born. Part guide, part photo book, all combined in a mobile eBook version, so you can take it along as your own personal guide when visiting Vienna at Christmas time. With new markets popping up every year we don’t claim the book to cover every single venue, but it’ll give you a good overview of the markets that are available to visit before Christmas in and around Vienna.
Each chapter begins with some general factual information about each market, like opening times and dates, address and website. The dates and times change each year so I decided to update the information and add new markets that I have visited in the meantime. We don’t manage to visit all markets each year, so some might have changed a little, but most of the time their appeal remains the same. If we re-visit a market and it has changed significantly, or I take new photos, they get updated as well.
Over the years, we have spent more and more time visiting Christmas markets outside of Vienna. By 2018 they became so numerous, we decided to make them a separate book. Most of these are within about an hour's drive of Vienna, in Lower Austria (Niederösterreich), Burgenland and Bratislava. The
