About this ebook

Romance on the Go

When Sam Yates meets Elliot at a Harwin Biotechnologies office party, he can hardly believe the tanned and muscular Adonis is interested in a nerdy scientist like himself. However, the attraction between the two men is immediate and it doesn’t take them long to act on it. It is only the next morning that Sam realizes that he’s just slept with Elliot Harwin—the company president.

The revelation leaves Sam uneasy and afraid it will look like he's trying to sleep his way up the corporate ladder. But Elliot helps him to put aside these reservations, and it isn’t long before Sam achieves the professional success and personal fulfillment he has long sought. But this newfound happiness is threatened when a jealous co-worker tells Sam that he's not the first employee with whom Elliot has been involved. With his career and love life at stake, Sam starts to wonder whether the foundation he and Elliot have constructed has been built on lies.

    Chapter One

Downing his third scotch and soda, Sam Yates tried not to wince as the sounds of Beyonce’s latest single, mixed with techno beats, pounded in his ears. As he watched his colleagues dance and socialize in the private club rented out for the night, he reminded himself, It’s a celebration, so celebrate.

After all, it wasn’t every day a research team received FDA approval for a drug representing a new type of insulin that would improve the lives of millions of diabetics. But of more concern to most of Sam’s colleagues in the room, the FDA approval would likely result in millions, if not billions, of dollars for their employer, Harwin Biotechnologies. He couldn’t blame them for wanting to party and blow off some steam, but he didn’t have the heart to join in.

How did I know I’d find you being a Gloomy Gus hanging out by yourself in the corner? Sam’s coworker, Audrey Mathis, approached him with two drinks in her hand, one of which she extended toward him. I figured you’d need a refill.

What is it? he asked, eying the glass warily.

A mojito. Bottoms up. She took a healthy swallow from her own drink and smiled.

Though he knew he’d pay a price in the morning for mixing his alcohols, Sam set his empty glass down on a nearby table and took the mojito from Audrey. Thanks.

If you looked any happier, someone might think you were at a funeral. Do you know how many scientists work their entire lives and never get to the point where we are now? And we’re not even forty yet.

    I know.

So, what is it? Let me guess, this is about not getting to work on the cancer team?

Annoyed Audrey saw through him so easily, Sam asked, And what if it is? The only reason I joined Harwin Biotech is because they are working on cutting edge cancer vaccines, and that’s where I want to be.

Only the best and the brightest work on the cancer teams. You don’t just start there once you get your foot in the door.

I know, Sam told her in a curt tone.

So, why are you sulking about it? Look at the bright side, the FDA approval ups your chances for getting on one of the cancer teams the next time there’s an opening. Except you’ll have to get in line behind me. Audrey flashed a mischievous grin. I want to work on a cancer team too, and I’ve got three years seniority on you.

Sam forced himself to return the smile, knowing Audrey spoke the truth. Whatever career
