Introduction

How to get writing:

- do NOT start at the beginning!

- know the causes of writer’s block

- tricks of the trade

It is an ongoing tragedy that 50% of all PhD students never graduate. Without doubt, the biggest barrier to graduation is the writing of the thesis. There can be no more daunting a prospect than sitting down to write your thesis – cursor winking on a blank screen – knowing you will need to produce a document to pass several time-honored ritual tests: First, the Latin test: I hope you know what viva voce and magnum opus means? Because you will need to pass both of those. Or how about the weight test and the caliper test? Your thesis will need to pass those physical exams too. And how do you even get to that point? What if you have writer’s block? (all students do)

This essential writing guide is aimed at getting students over writer’s block. You will learn the tricks of the trade – applicable to any thesis, whether in the humanities or the sciences – to conquer writer’s block and sail through the thesis writing process, overcoming hurdles faced by generations of students before and generations to come, but starting with the obvious question: where to start? And if there is one piece of advice to take home from this book it is this: DO NOT START AT THE BEGINNING!
