About this ebook

This little book is intended to raise debate and speculation. It covers several aspects and causes of Global Warming, attacks a few popular conceptions and tries to probe some possible solutions.
There is no highly technical science understandable only by scientists but a practical view by a layman who tries to see a different angle to some popular views.

    Chapter 1. INTRODUCTION

How often have you seen a photograph similar to the picture on the front cover of this book being used as an illustration of the pollution effect of a coal fired power station? I've seen plenty! This is the type of well-meant misinformation that confuses the general public and may set well-intentioned folk on the wrong track towards solving this suffering planet's problems. The picture is of a cooling tower, not a chimney and the 'smoke' is actually nothing more than clean water vapor!

There are some people who either do not believe that global warming is happening or that it is purely a natural phenomena that we can do nothing about. The scientists tell us that the polar bears are dying out and I have seen my favourite coral reefs dying over the last thirty years, so I believe the scientists. If is a purely natural occurrence then we can help to slow it down by reducing our air pollution and help to keep this earth liveable as we know it for a bit longer.

The point of the paragraph above is simply that we should carefully consider every aspect of global warming and get all the facts about any and all possible solutions before dashing off on ill informed campaigns that can lead to dead ends or solutions that are worse than the problems themselves.

The reader may not agree with many of the statements in this little book but that is excellent! Controversy encourages debate and sensible debate can solve many problems. No one person knows all of the answers but if enough good brains work together who knows how many answers may be found?

There are many proposals for solutions to global warming, some excellent and some not as effective as first meets the eye. The conversion of fuel into energy almost always results in heat or pollutant output and reduction of unnecessary heat or pollutants is one of the keys to reducing global warming. If one process requires more energy than another to achieve a goal, then the energy cheapest process is the best one. For example, when a particular machine is built to do a given job, how much energy is required to mine, refine and transport the materials, to build, transport and install the machine and how much energy will it use to produce a given number of whatever it produces. I call this the Total Energy Cost (TEC) of the machine or whatever we are making.

By the same token, pollutant output for all of the above processes should be taken into account. If there is a process to neutralize the pollutants, they can be left out of the Total Pollution Cost (TPC) but the TEC of the neutralization process should be added to the TEC of the machine.

    Chapter 2. ELECTRICITY

Electricity is probably the most widely used form of energy supply in
