THE HISTORY OF CANDLE MAKING
Throughout history candles have been used for utilitarian purposes—for heat and light. They were a necessary part of life. Candles were the only lighting available at that time. In today’s world it is a different story. Candles often serve as decorations, creating ambient lighting for romantic dinners, atmosphere or luxury in the bath. Often candles are used as scented aromatherapy or household air fresheners. Candles are still widely used and appreciated today.
Of course it is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of the candle’s first use. It is believed that cavemen used a form of candles made from animal fat. The remains of clay candle holders dating back to 4 BC in Egypt have been found, which leads us to believe that candles have been in use for a very long period in time. Egyptians were also known to have made a form of candle by dripping beeswax onto leaves. Ancient forms of candles were used in China and Japan, made from the wax extracted from insects and seeds. In India, taper candles were made from was extracted from boiling cinnamon. In America, however, candles were not known to have existed before 1 AD, but it is believed that Native American’s burned oily fish for their lighting. When settlers finally came to New England, they used a technique which extracted a wax-like substance from bayberries, a process which is still used by candle makers today to make bayberry candles.
The primary substance to make candles in the 1600-1700’s was tallow, which is a by-product of animal fat. Tallow worked well as candle lighting, but these candles
