Introduction
Regardless of how you feel today, there was a day long ago (or maybe not that long ago) when you looked into each other’s eyes, professed your love for one another, and said, I do
. It was your wedding day. And whether you said those words in front of hundreds of people or said them in front of a couple of witnesses and a justice of the peace, in your mind…you meant them.
At that point in time you felt like your relationship would last forever, and there would be romance around every turn. Your spouse was the one for you and you alone. Remember that day and the feelings it created as you read this book because those memories will remind you that you once had feelings for each other that were as solid as granite. If anyone doubted your love for each other on your wedding day, you would not have listened to them because your love for each other was so strong.
If you are reading this guide, then most likely those feelings have faded. You may barely remember what it felt like to be completely in love. You are wondering if you should get out of this relationship that you believed was so sacred on your wedding day. You probably even have negative feelings toward your spouse now—feelings you could not even conceived as a possibility on your wedding day. But these negative feelings have crept into your mind and heart over time. You might not even be able to muster up any positive feelings (or very few) toward your spouse right now – too much has happened…feelings have been hurt too many times.
You need to know that you are not alone. Many others have married only to rethink their decision years or even just months later. Some relationships have survived these thoughts and negative feelings resulting in resurrected marriages, but others have not.
More than 2 million marriages are created each year in the United States, and almost half of those marriages end in divorce. The major reasons for divorce are a lack of intimacy, having an affair, or just falling out of love with one another.
Affairs are common. Almost 70 percent of all married men and 60 percent of all married women will eventually have an affair. Eighty percent of those who divorce because of an affair eventually come to regret their decision. Nevertheless, someone gets divorced every 10-13 seconds, and almost half of all people who get divorced have unresolved feelings of anger about the marriage and/or divorce. And women usually have more trouble getting back into another intimate relationship than do most men.
The average affair lasts for 2-4 years. If it becomes public knowledge, it is most likely a doomed affair. More than 3/4 of all those who marry the person they had an affair with will likely come to divorce that person. In fact, when an affair replaces a fallen marriage, the stressors that existed in the first marriage
