    Introduction

If you are reading this guide, you are clearly interested in growing your own tomatoes. This book is not just intended for those who have very little knowledge about the process of growing tomatoes, but it will give a beginning tomato farmer all the information needed to get started. It is also a great resource for those already growing tomatoes. It can give you a quick refresher on growing if you need it, it can help pinpoint some ways to increase your crop yield, and/or it can help you troubleshooting growing issues you may be dealing with such as annoying pests and diseases.

You may also fall into the curiosity category and just have an idle interest in growing tomatoes and wondering about the benefits of doing so. You might be thinking, Why grow your own tomatoes? The answer to that is people grow tomatoes for many different reasons that usually include one or more of the top five reasons: nutrition, price, contamination from pesticides, availability, and flavor quality with variety.

Nutrition – A medium ripe tomato contains a long list of nutrients including calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C, thiamin, lycopene, and riboflavin. No wonder they are so good for you! And since tomatoes are about 95% water with only 22 calories per medium-sized tomato, consuming fresh tomatoes regularly is highly beneficial for your health.

Availability – With tomatoes being so nutritional, the easier it is to get them, the more you can enjoy their health benefits. Growing your own tomatoes will make them all the more available on demand without having to run to the grocery store whenever you need some.

Pesticides – Chemical pesticides used by commercial tomato growers expose consumers to a variety of toxins with significant health threats. This is currently a matter of much debate among the experts. You are safest when you adopt the age-old life recommendation…better safe than sorry. Growing your own tomatoes and controlling their environment ensures you will not be consuming toxins unless you choose to use the same chemical pesticides.

Price – The price for purchasing fresh tomatoes at your local grocery store varies according to season as well as shipping costs. They are available year-round throughout the country whether grown fresh in natural growing seasons or grown in greenhouses out of season. You will pay
