Chapter 1
Overview
The sport of Soccer
Soccer is one of the most popular sports and played by millions around the world. According to FIFA statistics, nearly 265 million males and females around the globe play the game. The FIFA World Cup is the world’s most widely viewed sporting event. An estimated 715.1 million people watched the final match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and the 2010 South Africa event was broadcast to 204 countries on 245 different channels. In comparison, in the United States, Super Bowl XLV (2011) averaged 111 million viewers.
Almost 40 years ago, there were no college athletic scholarships for women. Now, almost 200,000 women play college sports and many of those student athletes receive scholarships.

Only a few elite athletes will receive full scholarships to play. It is more common for a College Coach to split scholarships amongst players (i.e. 1/2 or 1/4) on the team.
What percentage of kids go on to play college soccer?
Generally, there are only about 5,000 total roster spots available to freshmen at colleges (Division I, Division II and Division III), and about 100,000 high school senior soccer players graduating each year. According to the NCAA, the 2% of athletes who are actively recruited are usually the elite or blue-chip
athletes. It’s a big deal to make a college team with or without a scholarship.
Getting recruited to play college soccer generally involves two major steps. The first is to be offered a potential roster spot and the second is the athletics scholarship (or academic funding) discussion. The first step takes place usually before the second step.
What does it take to play college soccer?
You must have the talent to play at the college level. The game is faster and more athletic than high school or club soccer. Second, you must have good work habits, maturity and self-discipline. Coaches look at academic performance in high school as much as they look at a player’s skills on the field. If a player applies herself in the classroom, the academic success should follow in college. If you have the talent to play college soccer, you need to take the initiative to market yourself to college coaches.
The competition level in college soccer is high, at all levels. Division I is the most competitive, but even at Division III, NAIA or Junior College, the game is faster and more athletic than high school.
College coaches are looking for the player who shows determination, dedication and passion. They want a team player who’s willing to go the extra mile, has mental toughness, is able to perform under pressure and has respect for her teammates and coaching staff.
Tactical awareness is a huge plus. Coaches want to see a player who can read what is happening on the field and make the correct decisions to help her team. Physical speed is key. A college coach wants to see a player who displays speed, agility, quickness and strength by getting to the ball faster than her opponent. Some athletes are naturals at speed, but with others, it can be developed with consistent training.
Psychologically, can you handle pressure? Do you have the will to win? Are you not afraid of physical risk? College soccer is extremely physical. Are you willing to take on other bigger players going for the ball?
Being a college athlete requires a huge time commitment. Besides the 20-30 hours in class each week, you need to account for an additional 10-20 hours of team training (including fitness). On top of that, you need to add for travel time to matches and an additional 20-30 hours of study time.
Can playing soccer help me get into a better school?
Yes, to a certain degree, soccer can help you get admitted into a good school. Additional support from a coach can help a player in admissions; however, players have to have the test scores and grades that are at least ‘on the bubble’ to get it. A coach only has so many ‘pushes’ with admissions, and the less they have to use with admission, the better. Coaches won’t recruit a player with mediocre grades when it could affect the coach’s graduation record or their own job stability.
That said, if a player has average grades, a coach can provide some support to an athlete to help in the admissions process. Admissions want to see that your grades are consistent and that you’ve been working hard in high school. A student with solid B’s on her report card is perceived more favorably than someone whose grades range from A-C, as that tells the coach that the student is someone who has ability, but may not have the discipline or motivation. A student with solid B’s, on the other hand, might be someone who steadily plugs away at her grades and makes certain the work gets done. The better the grades, the less amount of support the college coach has to use with admissions.
What is the difference between Division I, Division II and Division III play?
Division I is what most athletes are familiar with. Speed is the main thing that distinguish a Division I player from Division II, Division III and NAIA. The Division I player is required to do things much faster, as there is more pressure from other skilled players. Division I and Division II offer scholarships, while Division III doesn’t. However, Division III offers financial aid in the form of grants, loans, awards, etc. NAIA and NJCCA- Division I also offer athletic scholarships.
Division I requires a larger time commitment for the player (with some exceptions like Ivy League Schools, which have time restrictions in place and a shorter preseason). Athletes can easily spend 2-3 hours per day training and/or doing various other activities associated with the team (fitness, playing in games, travelling to games, etc). There is no off season in Division I. You are expected to train year round. The commitment in Division III is much less, as play in off-season is much more severely restricted.
Division I is very competitive, but there is quality of play in Division II and Division III as well. There are some top Division II and Division III teams, that could beat some lower level Division I teams. Travel times are usually much less in Division III, as games are usually closer geographically.

The Recruiting Timeline
When should I start narrowing my choices and contacting colleges?
The recruiting process has begun so early, that many players are committing by the end of their Sophomore year, or early part of their Junior year. Many parents and players believe they have plenty of time, but often come to the conclusion that they should have started
