    GODDESS OF DESTRUCTION

    PART II

    LOSING

Wolf and man traveled ceaselessly. They rested only briefly at night, curled around each other and dozing fitfully in the winter barrenness. There was no reason to linger at rest, when the cold sapped any will to sleep. There were no trees for fire, nor any food. They were moving again before the dawn, which was signaled only by a gradual lessening of darkness. All about them was grey and empty.

Addon began to feel they would travel this way always, until the end of days. He yearned for a fire and a tankard of ale, a warm bed, or a good cleansing fight. Anything but this barren emptiness marked only by the cadence of their footfalls on the packed stony ground. Still, this empty land was more full for him by her side than hundreds of cities without her. Where the Goddess went, he would go. He was jogging beside her in a kind of waking sleep when Sachi abruptly stopped and lifted her nose in the air. He knew his senses had been dulled by the cold and his tired body, but he sharpened his gaze and scanned all horizons. Nothing.

Something, Sachi said. Her voice in his head was different, as if she spoke through heavy curtains. She barked once, then took off at a lope.

He followed as fast as he could, but she was Wolf, and her long legs left him behind quickly. She stopped once to look back at him and bark, then turned and ran again, not so fast that he lost sight of her, but fast enough that she became a distant object in his vision, a small moving flash of silver in his eyesight. He labored to catch up.

He caught the smell of smoke before he saw it, a dark wisp in the distance. Where there was smoke, there was fire, and maybe people, and food. He sent Sachi a warning not to stray closer without his sword, not sure if she could hear him. But she waited. He slowed as he grew closer, to catch his breath and to avoid making noise, then crept the final few yards to her side where she stood on the edge of a small cliff.

Below them was a smattering of houses, pitiful dwellings barely bigger than the one they had last slept in. He could see no people, no animals, no vegetation, but one of the huts had thin wisps of smoke coming from the roof hole. People, then.

Stil they held back. Sachi didn’t move, her gaze intent on the scene below. Something wrong here, she finally sent him through the curtain of his mind. He nodded shortly.

It was not long before a woman emerged from one of the huts. They were not so far away that Addon could not see her fairly clearly, her skirt dirty and her blouse torn. She moved slowly, awkwardly, her hands never leaving the walls of the dwelling but trailing its length. When she ran out of wall, she stepped out carefully, putting one foot cautiously in front of the other until she reached a small cistern. She pumped it for several minutes before a small trickle of water dripped out. Sachi’s ears flicked at the smell of it – it was fetid, but it was water, and she and Addon had had nothing to drink for almost two days. The woman turned toward them, carrying the pail with its precious few drops, and Addon saw why she had moved so awkwardly.

Her eyes had been put out.

Sachi woofed softly and he shot her a warning glance. She is no danger to us. There is no danger to us here. Not now. But a few days ago. The fear still lingers, this place stinks of pain.

    How many?

Just her. There were others, but they are corpses now.

Addon’s eyes never left the hut the woman entered, but he winced at Sachi’s words. He felt no blood-lust, only weariness and a growing horror. We need water, and information, he said.

She woofed again softly, then started picking her way down the short slope.

Sachi! She will be terrified at the -- he had been about to say sight of you, but of course the woman would not be able to see them. Just in case, though, Sachi wagged her tail and tried to look friendly as she picked her way down the hill.

Addon shook his head at the sight of the Goddess of Destruction's furry rear end as she slithered down a slope with her tail wagging, trying to look friendly. She shot a warning glance at him over her shoulder, sensing his amusement. Swallowing his laughter, he slid his way down the rocky slope behind her.

They approached the woman’s hut quietly and slowly. Sachi was confident there was naught here to fear at the moment, but she sensed that this woman was deathly afraid of something. Or someone. The air was redolent with despair. When they reached the door Sachi woofed softly and scratched at it.

Addon knocked. There was a scraping sound within, as if someone had pushed back a chair, then silence. He knocked again. He thought he heard the muffled sound of crying inside.

We can’t just barge in there, he pointed out in response when Sachi butted her head against his hip in exasperation. Even he could feel the fear that seeped through the door. The woman was terrified he would enter.

    Speak! She commanded him.

Oh! Oh! Um. Hello? He looked at her helplessly. Sachi shook her head in wonder. The mighty consort of Destruction was being shy?

She’s not going to open the door for you, she pointed out.

Sighing, he lifted the latch and pushed the door open, but did not step in. The place stank of blood and fear. Sachi took a step back as the scent rolled over her. This was not destruction, nor even Death. It was mutilation. It was senseless. She shook her head, trying to catch a scent of something else, but there was nothing else. Just hopelessness.

I am not here to hurt you, Addon called in a calm, clear voice. The room was dark, only grey sunlight coming through a dirty window opposite the door. There was no movement, but Sachi turned her gaze sharply to her right. I am coming in now, he announced, stepping over the threshold. There was a muffled sound, and his hand went reflexively to his sword. Sachi padded into the room behind him. My name is Addon. Mayhap I can help you, he offered. Still nothing. Finally, he said, I know you are here. I watched you pump the water. I know you cannot see me, that you have no eyes. How did this happen?

There was a pause. Then, Who are you? Who comes to this house, who does not know this place? The woman whispered, stepping partially out from where she had crouched in the corner behind a small pile of wood. She looked to be in her middle years, greying hair straggling around her shoulders.

My name is Addon, he said again. I come from...I come from the East. Best not to reveal too much, although this woman was clearly no threat to them.

Addon from the East, she said softly, testing the words in her mouth. You must leave here at once. This place is death. She looked nervous. The place where her eyes had been was red and puckered, still oozing pus and a little blood.

Let me help you, Addon said, stepping further into the room. What happened to your eyes? Who did this to you? Sachi heard the steel of anger in him and felt her own blood-lust rise in response.

No! the woman said quickly. No, you must go, you must go back to where you came from. Leave while you can. They will be back, they will be here soon. She was growing agitated, desperate to get rid of him.

I am not afraid of any man, Addon told her gently.

Not men, she hissed. Not men! Her hands lifted to her empty eyes sockets and her fingers waving uselessly in front of her face, afraid even to touch her own skin. What was left of it.

Sachi growled low in her throat. Sonelion. The woman started at the sound and turned her face directly to where Sachi stood next to Addon, her head at his waist. Is that a dog? She asked. Suddenly she seemed more focused. "I haven’t eaten in almost a
