BATHING AND GROOMING YOUR BICHON-FRISE
Anyone who comes in contact with a Bichon-Frise will instantly notice the dog’s beautiful, powdery poofy white coat. Not only is the curly covering nice and full, it also has a natural sheen to it that makes the breed glint like a diamond under the light. Whether the coat is prepared for show or simply combed down for everyday living, the Bichon-Frise and its shining brown eyes tend to give off the appearance of a solid white, happy little teddy bear.
To the joy of many, the Bichon is a breed of dog that is basically shed free. This makes them a great choice for those individuals seeking a breed of dog that will not disturb their allergies. However, the Bichon will call for a twice weekly routine of grooming. Their curly hair easily mats and combing out tangles can not only be frustrating, it can be painful as well. When in the show ring, the Bichon-Frise is one that will need to be clipped into a distinct and particular style as well.
Grooming is not just about appearances and in order to stay healthy, a Bichon-Frise's coat will need brushing and combing on a regular basis. Habitual grooming not only distributes body oils throughout the coat but also prevents problems with skin diseases and everyday common parasites that tend to gravitate to dogs. Combing and grooming on consistent basis also allows an owner to look over their Bichon-Frise for other problems. While grooming, owners can check their dog's eyes, ears, teeth, paws, tail and rear. The responsible Bichon-Frise owner who sets up a grooming routine is ten times more likely to find a problem when there is one and prevent an illness from getting out of hand.
