    Rex Pain of Mars?

    THE WORLD BURNS RED LIKE THE FIRES OF HELL COME TO LIFE ON A WAR TORN DUMP CALLED MARS. The heat of the sun is so strong that, when it reflects off the hard worn surface of the planet, it is enough to set Rex's suit to a long steady beeping. That seems to mark the time better than the internal clock, which he has pulled up nice and large in the center of his suits display.

    Tell me that it's going to get cooler, Eddy.

    The tall black man in his light red suit, who seems to be constantly fiddling with a small keyboard that is invisible to all without a tactical computer equipped, doesn't look up.

    The global weather service reports that it is going to get even hotter over the next rotation. Your suit might even explode.

    Great. I've always wanted to be a floating blood patty. I'm sure that my mother will be so proud.

    Edwards sniggers. He sounds like a small animal digesting something unpleasant.

    You earthlings are so useless in the sun, he says snarkily. If you had...

    I know, I know. Mercury is a ball of heated cow dung. I don't need to hear another story about your sordid childhood.

    The tall man glances back and clicks his fingers. The sound of old prerecorded audio flows through Rex's suit. It is a long winded story about how he lost .

    Make him stop! Zack cries through the team’s internal communication system, joining several other voices.

    Stop, Eddy. I don’t think our sanity will last the rest of that.

    The man shrugs. His metallic shoulders go up and the sounds of gears and stabilizers crunching fills the air.

    I always liked that one. Why kill off a good thing? You might learn something.

    How did I get stuck with this super nerd? Rex muses. I'm sure I paid last year’s taxes. Maybe Command really has it in for me.
