      Introduction

      Ghosts… do they exist or are they just a figment of our imagination?

      Perhaps you yourself have seen a ghost or experienced some form of paranormal activity in your own life? But how do you know you have really seen a ghost?

      Hi I’m Daniel Hardie, author of ‘Ghosts in Houses and Other Spooky places.’ I’m a travel and adventure writer and with books such as Backpacker Europe, Why Sailing, World Wildlife Adventures and more, with even more on the way.

      For this eBook however I wanted to write something about what I believe is a fascinating topic and to me is of course an adventure. Visiting haunted places known throughout the world whether that be in houses, hotels, castles or even in spooky cemeteries.

      According to some theories ghosts only appear in full apparition if the spirit actually wants you to see them and if this is the case it is believed that the spirit is trying to convey a message or communicate with the living.

      Others believe that when you feel the temperature drop dramatically or any candles around you flicker without any wind that there is a spirit close by.

      Many scientists however are sceptical of the idea and many discredit any findings or stories of paranormal activity. When ghosts are involved there is little to no evidence as they apparently appear anywhere, at any time and to anyone.

      Finding a place to set up equipment and test at the right location at the precise time can prove to be quite difficult for ghost hunters.

      Sceptics believe that ghosts are all in the mind believing that stress, anxiety or coping with death are all factors that lead people to see spirits.

      This theory is based on the reason that a high majority of people who claim to see ghosts have had a traumatic experience at some point in their life prior to the alleged sighting.

      The believers deflect that belief stating that the traumatic experience may have opened the gates to the spiritual world.

      This book is not designed to convince you one way or another whether ghosts are real or not... it is written to give you an insight to the most famous haunts throughout the world where ghost hunters and often sceptics find irresistible to visit.

      Whether you’re a believer, sceptic or someone who just loves the entertainment side of the supernatural you will enjoy reading the stories, learning the history and the events of these ghosts in houses… and other spooky places.

      But first what exactly is a ghost? Determining what a ghost actually is might help explain the different beliefs.

      Ghosts Explained

      There are many ways to describe a ghost and there are certainly many different forms.

      When entering the world of the paranormal there are many beliefs throughout the world, in history and in culture which have all had a part to play in modern beliefs, whether for or against the belief in the paranormal.

      Firstly the word paranormal is the description for something that is outside or beyond what is considered normal.

      The realm of paranormal covers more than just ghosts covering everything considered as unexplained and abnormal. Some examples include demons, UFO’s, crypto-zoology, ESP and telepathy, all within the category of the paranormal.

      When it comes to ghosts there are also many different and varied beliefs. Probably the most popular idea is that ghosts are people who have passed away and have not accepted that they’re deceased.

      Therefore their spirit has remained on Earth to roam until their calling. In this belief there is a final task that the soul has to complete before crossing over to the other side.

      Another belief is that ghosts are actually just imprints of memories or characteristics of someone that is deceased but not actually tied to that once living person’s soul.

      Examples of these memory imprints include claims such as seeing a ghost jogging, knocking at doors or perhaps even working. The theory here is that these are imprints of former lives, almost like a flash back and that the entity is displaying the same movements as they had in their former human lives.

      Some others describe these imprints as something else all together, believing that it is a parallel dimension or space-time continuum and that there is a cross over between the two parallels.

      Describing what a ghost physically looks like is almost impossible to determine and this is due to the fact that there are different forms of ghosts, haunting experiences and unexplained events.

      However there are three very common forms that you are probably already aware of. These are Orbs, Ectoplasm and full apparitions.
