Used over the centuries exclusively for guarding the sheep flocks or cattle herds as unique specialization, the dogs from this group represent, through their way of forming and spreading, a proof of the important role they played into a certain historic stage from the evolution of the human society. This group contains a great number of breeds, with a large area of dispersion, a wealth of forms and varieties, owning, along with the breeds of hunting dogs, a special place numerically. From the start, the dog proved even other qualities than the one of hunter and of them, the instinct of guarding the master’s belongings was always the most appreciated. At the beginning, the watchdogs of the herds and flocks were exclusively a part of the large, massive, strong and courageous dogs, ready anytime to face the kidnappers, no matter if they were wolfs or bears. In time, because of the different environment conditions and the services solicited, the existent forms diversified a lot, appearing an increasingly number of breeds, with various exterior aspects. The first forms of shepherd dogs are known from the oldest of times, and their great dissemination is due to the development along the millenniums of the human’s preoccupations for raising animals, of the economical exchanges occurred between different human communities, of the migration of some people (particularly the Asian people), which determined coming into contact of the different canine populations and implicit of forming new breeds. In the actual conditions, when the number of animals raised in traditional system, on grass, diminished significantly, a great number of dog breeds, at origins for herding, gained a well deserved role as protection or utilitarian dogs.
1. THE GERMAN SHEPHERD
DESCRIPTION. Dog with harmonious general aspect, slightly elongated, athletic, with obvious musculature and strong skeleton. The head is balanced, of a slightly elongated shape toward the snout, without being pointy. The jaws are powerful, with massive teeth that close in scissors
. The snout is black. The eyes are medium sized, almond shaped, slightly oblique, brown colored, brisk look, intelligent. The ears are medium sized and pointy at the top, with tall insertion and are worn straight upward. The neck is strong, devoid of collar. The torso has a rectangular profile, with a long superior line, straight and slightly descendant, from the withers toward the croup, well dressed in muscles, large and muscular loins, long and slightly splayed croup, deep chest, but not too wide, slightly sucked abdomen. The limbs are straight, parallel, with strong skeleton, small paw, round and well closed. The long tail, well dressed in compact hair, worn slightly arched, downwards, reaches the knuckles. It presents three varieties of hair: short, harsh and shaggy, the most widespread being the variety with short, thick, straight, harsh and slick hair on the body, shorter on the head and the anterior faces of the limbs. The color of the robe can be completely black or black with characteristic drawing, represented by brown shapes, buff, red, yellow, iron-gray, gray, as well as the agouti
color (wolfish). The height at the withers, specified in the standard, is 60-65 centimeters for males and 55-60 centimeters for females, the body weight varying between 25 and 40 kilograms.
THE ORIGIN. A German breed, it was considered for a long time as a domesticated form of the wolf, because of the seemingly alike with it regarding the general look. The old type of the breed is supposed to have appeared somewhere at the middle of the seventeenth century, the modern shape being described for the first time into a standard from the 1884. A special role in the growth and selection of this breed falls back to the cavalry captain Max von Stepanitz.
PSYCHIC FEATURES. Courageous, intelligent, trusty, attached to the owner and his family. Easy to be educated, has the pleasure to learn. It adapts quickly to any unpredicted situation. Characterized by a vivid temper, it is an active dog, but perfectly balanced psychically, loves the children. Needs firmness in training, but stands hardly a tough treatment.
UTILIZATION. At origin a herd dog, the German shepherd became in time the uncrowned king
of the utilitarian dogs for guarding and protection. His physical and psychic qualities had given the possibility of using them in the most various purposes, from guarding and protection work, to the one of escort for the blind, alpine rescuer, intervention dog in the case of natural cataclysms, fires, drugs tracking, fact for which this breed has known the biggest spread and use.
2. THE BELGIAN SHEPHERD TERVUREN
DESCRIPTION. Large sized dog, strong, but supple and agile. Long head, narrowing toward the snout. Strong jaws, with complete teeth, which close into a scissor. Middle sized eyes, almond shaped, dark colored. The ears with medium development, larger at the base and pointy at the top are inserted up and worn elevated. Robust torso, with a straight superior line, wide enough and well dressed in muscles and parallel with the ground. Deep chest, the abdomen is lightly sucked. Strong limbs, well dressed in muscles, parallel with each other, with oval paws, well closed. The tail is well dressed in hair, in repose it hangs, reaching the knuckles, in irritation it is elevated until the back’s level. The hair is abundant, of medium length, shorter on the head, ears and the anterior faces of the limbs, long around the neck, forming a mane. The color of the robe is black, with characteristic drawing, being mandatory the black colored mask. The waist of the males is around 63 centimeters, for females it is slightly lower, and the body weight is included between 28 and 32 kilograms.
THE ORIGIN. The paternity of the breed is attributed according to some sources, to the brewer Corbeels from the Belgian town Tervueren, which obtained a shepherd dog (similar to another Belgian breed: Groenendael), with the hair of doe-titian-red color. The standard of the breed was elaborated by the Belgian Society of Veterinarian Medicine.
PECULIARITIES. Especially intelligent, attached to the owner, learns fast and with much pleasure if he is bridled with a firm but gentle hand.
UTILIZATION. Dog encountered in the past around the flocks, the Tervueren has become today a good companion and a service dog.
3. THE ROMANIAN CARPATHIAN SHEPHERD
GENERALITIES. The Carpathian is a massive, large dog, derived from the MOLOSSUS
group, used by the Romanian shepherds from the Carpathian Mountains, for many centuries for guarding the herds and their personal protection against large predatory and villains. It is a calm and balanced nature but irresistible to attack and protect. It has a robust physique and resistant to the most harsh conditions. The general impression is of a vigorous, imposing and towering dog, very aggressive when needed. With massive, thickset constitution, with strong bones, it has a rich fur, a contour almost quadratic and a worthy of note behavior. The sexual disposition is well expressed, in the somatic way.
THE HEAD is massive, with wide forehead but very little cambered, the stop is smooth, the muzzle is strong, a little shorter or at most equal in length with the forehead, does not thin out too much toward the big, wide and black snout. The lips are thick, well closed on the strong jaws with extremely well developed teeth, with correct molecule and complete numerically.
