    Chapter One

Kiera Blakely was having a bit of a breathing problem. She was aware it could be easily remedied by shoving Shawn away from her. Or simply pulling away and removing his tongue from her mouth.

Their tongues were mated in the oldest dance known to man. His moans were overly pronounced and his hands overly grabby as he pawed her. There was a certain kind of desperation in his handling of her. And more so, on her part for allowing it. Her thoughts brought her up short as she realized that was exactly the way Shawn made her feel, not sweet kisses and tender caresses, but desperation.

Had she really gotten that hopeless? Sure she'd like a boyfriend, someone to confide in, but the man she was kissing didn't fit the bill. He was slurping her for God's sake. Now that she'd taken the time to think about it, she didn't much like the way he was touching her either. His hands were rough and he was moving over her skin much too fast, squeezing her breasts together as though he thought they were truly the melons that men joked about. When he clasped one of her nipples between his fingers and squeezed she jumped and let out with a yelp.

He barely paused before pushing his hand under her too short skirt going between her thighs so roughly that the friction of skin on skin was causing pain. She'd be lucky if she wasn't bruised all over if they went through with the final act.

    If?

Where did that come from? She'd told herself she wanted it, had even assured him in a round about way that tonight would be the night. And all because she wanted a date for her brother's pre holiday cookout. Oh oh, she was thinking too much, analyzing Shawn's kisses. It was time to end this. Pushing back she gave what she hoped was a bright smile. This could go badly if she didn't.

Whoa, hold up for a moment. I have to tell you, Shawn, you are definitely a good kisser. But you have to allow me to catch my breath. I need to make sure my clothes aren't rumpled, well more rumpled than they already are.

Shawn was staring at her as though she was an idiot and in truth that was the plan. At least his hands, mouth and tongue were no longer assaulting her.

I forgot to tell you my brothers are joining us for dinner tonight.

She noticed the very instant when his mood changed. He was no longer thinking she was behaving like a fool, no longer thinking he'd slake his lust inside her body tonight. There was controlled anger simmering just beneath the surface. He was biting his lips and taking in fast rapid breaths. She waited, knowing he'd do the rest himself. He'd met both of her brothers and it was apparent from his reactions he'd not liked either of them. Well, who could blame him when they'd both practically threatened him with castration if he so much as looked at her wrong.

More than likely he thought she was toying with him but she wasn't. She'd had every intention of taking things a step further tonight. She couldn’t help it if in the middle of his kisses a tiny ping had alerted her to the fact that he wasn't the one. And if he wasn't the one, or even in the ball park, things needed to be stopped before they took that final intimate step.

Kiera, couldn't you have told me before I came over that your brothers were joining us?

I didn’t know when I talked to you. Kevin called after and said he and Trey were dropping by.

Couldn’t you have told him you had a date?

    I did.

    And?

And he said they were coming so I should make enough food.

Isn't this kind of late for them to want to come here to eat dinner?

For a moment Kiera had to fight the indignation she was feeling. How dare he keep questioning her. Taking a deep breath she let it escape in a sigh. How about us? Is it too late for us to have dinner? She noticed it was now Shawn who was taking in a breath and releasing it in a sigh. But unlike her he didn't try to not glare at her.

How long will they be here?"

I'm not sure. Kevin needs to use my computer for something he's working with.

    God! Doesn't he own one?

Of course he does. I have a program on mine that he needs.

And will Trey's wife and kids be joining us in what was supposed to be our romantic dinner and what you said would be a night for me to remember?

Kiera was becoming just a bit annoyed at having to play twenty questions. She glanced at her watch and gave what she hoped would appear to be a panicked look. I'm not sure. Straighten your clothes. They'll be here any minute.

She watched as Shawn fought with himself wondering if he'd stay until after her brothers left in the hopes of getting lucky, or bail immediately. She was hoping for the bailing immediately. And considering neither of her brothers were coming over it would make the situation a bit stickier.

Look, Kiera, I like you. But I'm too old to be dating a woman who needs a chaperone. Like you said, I'm a good kisser and just in case you were wondering, I'm an even better lover. I'm what most women would consider a good catch. I'm wasting my time here with you. We've been dating a month and a half and still haven't made it to your bedroom. It's been fun. He thought it over. Sort of.

With his declaration and grunting sort of noise he tossed her a look of pity as if to say she'd just missed out on the best thing of her life. He didn't waste any time hightailing it out of her apartment, and she didn't waste any time laughing. He'd thought to insult her with his comments. She'd though for a moment she'd actually witnessed the expansion of his head as his ego increased. Her fault she knew, but she'd only helped to inflate his ego because her brothers always told her it was better to do that with a man you weren't really interested in, especially if you found yourself in a sticky situation and needed immediate extraction.

Though determined to be her personal body guards, her brothers had finally admitted they had limitations. Even they were aware they would not be able to be at her side in all situations, so giving her survival training on dealing with over amorous males had been demanded by them since their parents had allowed her to go on her first date.

The maneuver she'd just employed was called catch and release. You sort of like a guy, maybe even think you could have something if no more than a one night stand, and then perhaps in the middle you realize the error and want to stop. The main thing is not to piss the guy off. Hence the reason for inflating of the ego. That way if something goes wrong, he won't stalk you, or do anything crazy. He'll just think he's too good for you.

Kiera laughed. That was much better than having him stalk her. But it still left her with a dilemma. Once again she'd be without a date for a special event. She wanted badly to blame her mother for giving birth to her siblings on holidays, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. As for her, she was born on September first and occasionally Labor Day fell on her birthday. All holidays even the non birthday ones were huge celebrations and for some reason for the last three years she'd never had a date on any of those occasions. She didn't know why, but she'd have a temporary boyfriend leading up to and maybe after, but never for the actual event. She'd been hoping since her dateless New Year, that this year would be different. Seemed like she wasn't on a very good start. If she'd only been able to hold out just one week she would have had a date for her brother's Fourth of July bash. Heck, Shawn had already agreed to go with her.

Blowing out the candles she'd only lit a few minutes before they'd started kissing she snuffed them out, turned off the oven and the burners, reached for her car keys and headed out the door to her parents. For some reason she didn’t want to eat alone and her parents more than likely had nothing to do. They'd welcome her company. She winced when she glanced at the clock in her car. It was after nine. She hadn't known it was so late. Her parents would have finished dinner. For a second she thought of making a u-turn and returning home then decided she could have her mother make her a plate from the leftovers. She way over cooked in case one of them just dropped in as she was doing now.

Pulling up to her parents she was surprised to find her mother and father on the porch waving at a car that was just taking off. She could see two men in the front and a woman in back but it was much too dark to tell who they were.

Hey who was that? she asked moving to the porch and giving her parents a hug.

Sissy, why are you here? her mother asked.

To say she was taken aback would be putting it mildly. Her mother was annoyed that she'd dropped by. She'd never been irritated with any of her kids for dropping by. Her mother's abrasiveness had her wondering what she'd done. With a shrug Kiera looked to her father. I thought I'd come by and have dinner.

Her mother gave her a disgusted look before turning and walking back into the house.

Dad, what's with Mom? Why is she angry with me? When her mother stopped short and turned to glare at her Kiera moved to a position of safety behind her father's massive, protective back.

Don't ask your father, ask me. I asked you a week ago if you'd come for dinner tonight. I told you my old friend Amanda and her husband was coming. I also told you they had a son Christopher, the same age as you that I wanted you to meet. And you said no, that you had a date. Now you're here and you came as they were leaving. So if you think I'm happy to see you, I'm not. You're the one that needs a nice boyfriend, Kiera Blakely, not me.

Mom, I did have a date. It didn't work out. Her mother continued giving her the stank eye. I forgot you had friends over.
