    Preface

    It’s Only Words

We communicate with words on this planet. Words may not take us to the ultimate beauty of what is possible, but we need to work with them if we ever want to make a difference.

Communicating your ideas is more than the words you say. Your body has a language that either supports your words or signals clues of misalignment. The tone of your voice reveals your spirit. It gives your listeners messages from your current emotional state – whether it’s frustration, anger, or joy in knowing that your vision is indeed possible. This book is about trusting your intuitive impulses, speaking from a higher vibration, and connecting others to your vision. It is specifically addressed to nonprofit professionals, but it’s for anyone who wants to improve conditions in our world. And if you want to change the world, the place to start is by speaking with a new voice.

Be still for a moment. Envision what you want. Let that voice emerge.

Giving voice to your cause means speaking on its behalf. For example, if your mission is to live in a world where everyone is healthy and happy, speak with that voice, not the voice of dis-ease. Share a vision more compelling than the typical victim story. Go beyond scarcity consciousness into the higher level of self-actualization. Your listeners will feel the higher energy level and want to go there with you.

The examples and tips in this book are designed to help you rise above the chatter and allow a higher calling to speak through you. They are about reducing your effort yet paradoxically making an even greater contribution.

I learned about effort at an early age. When I had good ideas and tried to express them,

the words clamored against each other, all trying to make it out of my mouth first. My

feelings ran ahead of my words and what came out was incoherent babble. Instead of changing the world, I was sent to speech therapy. In my heart I knew my ideas would work if only I could express them. Years went by with the typical sibling ridicule and authority figures speaking for me. The more effort I put in to getting my ideas across, the more my frustration grew. Eventually I shut down and rationalized that the status quo was the way it was going to be. My words seemed futile.

But deep in my heart I knew there was a better way. I knew others were looking for change too. I just had to find a way to articulate my message in a way that spoke to the hearts of others.

Words are the key and the block. This book is about speaking in a way that takes less effort on your part. It’s about energetically engaging in meaningful and uplifting interactions with others whether you’re in a dialogue with one other person or giving a speech to a thousand participants. Words can be a major distraction or you can learn to use them as a magic elixir to make your nonprofit’s mission become reality.

    Chapter One

    Values Matter

It’s easier to speak with clarity, confidence and conviction when you’re expressing something that really matters to you. On my eighteenth birthday, I wanted nothing more than to rock out with my friends at an Alice Cooper concert. Unfortunately, it was the same night as the Martin County Dairy Princess Contest. As the dutiful daughter of a dairy farmer, I felt obliged to win for my father, even though I hated milk and my heart was with my friends at the concert. Not surprisingly, my speech about why I should be chosen as the new princess was laced with resentment. It left the audience – and the judges – feeling confused about my intentions. I missed the concert and I didn’t win the contest.

When you speak from your values you’ll naturally be energized. Potential donors will feel your sincerity and want to support your cause. One of the best ways to improve your confidence in public speaking is to take time to explore what really matters to you. Are your values the same as the values of your nonprofit organization?

Keep your values in mind when speaking and you’ll have a foundation that supports you in any situation. You’ll be able to organize your thoughts in a way that makes it easy for others to understand. They will be better informed to take appropriate action. Keeping attention on your values reduces the amount of mind chatter, which is mainly concerned with avoiding rejection or seeking approval. When you keep your attention on what really matters, asking for large donations becomes exciting! Your courage to ask for and receive larger donations expands your ability to care and make a significant difference. Everyone wins.

Take it a step further and ask yourself why your values are important to you. When facing any challenge, big or small, your values will be a guiding light and constant companion on your journey. When thinking about the mission of your nonprofit, ask yourself: How would a person with these values act in the world? How would they speak to others? How can I align my values with others?

Align Your Values: The Seattle Foundation

Learn the art of standing your ground while building consensus. Norm Rice, President and CEO of The Seattle Foundation, knows that being consistent helps people feel safe. Being consistent with his values and the way he approaches problems also helps people understand the best way to dialogue with him.

However, Norm always remembers what Ralph Waldo Emerson said: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. How do you know when to hold your ground, or when holding your ground is for the wrong reasons? In discussing this question with Norm, I learned some great tips for non-profit leaders who want to create a solid foundation and make it to the finish line with success.

    Tip! Align your leadership abilities

Are you in alignment? The moment you say yes to a new project, ask yourself if your individual values match what you’re trying to accomplish. You may be a skilled leader, but are you the right fit for the position? Take time to understand what’s important to you and share your personal stories. As you take on a leadership role, people want to know about you as a person. When asked to consider the presidency for The Seattle Foundation, Norm visited their website and read the
