    Chapter 1

Jane Parker led an unremarkable existence and that was precisely the way she liked things. Her parents were unexceptional genteel folk that had lived in the sleepy, no-account little village of Bibury, England for their entire lives. Jane was born and raised in Bibury and had no ambition whatsoever to travel outside of her hometown.

Her father was a scholarly sort and her mother preferred to spend her days reading the Bible or in prayer. Aside from instilling a strict sense of morals upon their daughter, they spent very little time involving themselves in her day-to-day activates.

Therefore it had fallen to Jane to make sure the house was in good order, a task she did not mind in the least. Nothing brought her greater pleasure than ensuring everything was in its proper place. She kept the housemaid on a tight schedule and she herself spent three hours every morning taking care of various chores that needed to be done such as mending or dusting the books.

This attention to cleanliness and detail seeped into Jane’s social life as well. She knew that she was no great beauty and she told herself she did not care. She kept her unfashionably light-colored hair severely pinned back and almost totally covered with a cap.

When not cleaning the house, she went about the village running errands or trying to organize other people’s lives. She absolutely abhorred messes. At the slightest hint of encouragement she would be over at a neighbor’s house helping to reorganize a closet or overseeing the making of their preserves with the latest preserve-making technique.

You’re such a busybody, Jane! her good friend Harriet had delicately teased a few days ago over tea.

"I’m not! I just, that is to say, I like having everything tidy. I am quite good at managing things. It’s really not my fault if I’m better at managing things than others."

"And I’m sure they are quite appreciative of your help," Harriet’s older sister, Mabel, said, her eyes dancing with mischief.

Jane looked at each of their faces and they all burst out laughing. She and the Hughes sisters had grown up together and she knew they meant well. They were the as close as family to her, often acting as the sisters she never had.

But Harriet had inadvertently hit a nerve that day. Jane was a busybody. And she couldn’t seem to help it! She interfered with others, even though it was with the best intentions, and she had a tendency to talk too much when she was nervous, two quirks that seemed to be getting worse with age.

Which is why Harriet’s comment had bothered her. In less than a week she would be turning twenty-seven. She had been on the shelf for several years now but it finally dawned on her that she was a spinster, an old spinster.

It wasn’t that she hadn’t wanted to get married. She did. But most men seemed to avoid her like the plague. And who could blame them? Men generally did not care for women interfering with their lives… even if it was for
