Beating Hypoglycaemia The Low Carb Way - Rachel Henderson
Introduction
Hypoglycaemia is an ever growing problem in our society. It is something which can affect people periodically, most of the time or in a pre-diabetic state. It has many unpleasant symptoms, both in the short term and long term and can lead to long term health problems. It can be difficult enough dealing with the emotional and physical unpleasantness brought about by low blood sugar but then also being prone to many health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer makes things even worse. However, there is a way to put a stop to the hypoglycaemia and reduce your chances of having one of these diseases in later life and it is simply to reduce the carbohydrates in your diet. This book will show you what effect carbohydrates have, how reducing them can change your body and the long term benefits of doing so.
This book is not intended to be a medical advisory. If you are making any changes to your diet then consult with your GP first and never change your medication or start taking supplements or over the counter medicines without speaking to them first. Life style changes, even if they are for the better, need to be made under the supervision of a medical professional.
The Effects of Carbohydrates on Blood Sugar
A carbohydrate is very basically a sugar. Foods high in carbohydrates are therefore sweets, biscuits, cakes and sugar. However, there are other foods that easily broken down by the body into usable sugars and these include, bread, pastries, potato and root vegetables, fruit and fruit juice, flour, pasta, rice. Basically anything containing grains and sugars, will be easily broken down by the body into the type of sugars that they use for energy.
This sounds like a great thing. We all need energy and so it seems to make sense to eat lots of foods with sugars in them, so that we have plenty of energy. It is not as simple as this though.
Many people do not realise what a detrimental effect carbohydrates have on our blood sugar levels and how that can make hypoglycaemia worse and sometimes even lead to type 2 diabetes and even metabolic syndrome. There has been a lot of conflicting evidence lately about the causes of these diseases and the effects of insulin and carbohydrates on the body, which means that many people are understandably confused.
However, there is no dispute as to how carbohydrates affect the blood sugar. They will cause it to rise. This is because they have forms of sugar in them, which are broken down to use in the body. This is what gives us energy and why after a meal, we
