Beth never imagined she would live to see sixteen, much less fall in love. Beaten and abused by her father, a World War II veteran, in 1960 rural Oklahoma, her future is grim. Her mother is already dead and her older brother, Jeff, is the only one who looks after her. But with a life and plans of his own, he can't always be there to help.
Until the mysterious and dreamy Tilo, a German immigrant, walks into her life. A truck driver for an employer he'd rather not name, with cargo he'd rather not know about, he seems to be just what Beth needs. But a man with his own troubled past.
