    Reunited

Jessica Carver straightened up from her hunched position to massage her lower back. She had been gardening for hours and the aches in her body were telling her it was time to stop. But she had to finish before the frost set in. She couldn’t afford to buy food in town for the entire winter.

Her husband had left nine months ago with his new foreman and first herd of cattle. They were going to use the money he made to expand the fledgling ranch they had started.

But he was seven months overdue.

Most of their money had been spent buying their first few head of cattle. With that gone she had to make do with what she had left. Every day was a fight for survival.

The sound of horse hooves made her turn. Three riders approached her ranch at break-neck speed. She tucked loose tendrils of dark chestnut hair behind her ear as she narrowed her eyes to see who they were.

As the leader of the gang came into focus she swore under her breath. Jessica was not one to hate people but Steven Thompson was the exception that made the rule. She quickly stood up and dusted herself off as best she could. She refused to appear at a disadvantage before that man.

The riders yanked their mounts to a halt mere feet from her garden patch causing them to whinny in protest.

Jessica smiled a sweet, though very fake, smile. Steven Thompson. To what do I owe the pleasure?

Steven removed his hat to reveal unwashed hair. Hard labor spoils the beauty of most women, Jessica. But it’s only make you prettier.

You will call me Mrs. Carver. And spare me your fake flattery. Get to the point.

Oh it’s most sincere, I assure you. I’ve come to renew my offer. I’m the richest man for miles around. Your husband has been gone for nine months. You could do far worse than marry me.

Jessica pretended to think for a moment. Nothing comes to mind.

Steven curled his lip into a sneer but, surprisingly, held his temper in check. Instead he dismounted and walked toward Jessica until he was uncomfortably close. She could smell his rank breath.

I need a woman to watch after my… holdings. He dropped his voice down to a whisper, don’t tell me it doesn’t get lonely out here in your cold, chaste bed. You’re far too young to deny yourself such pleasures. He paused for moment to stare in frank admiration of her breasts. You need a man with enough… endowments… to look after you properly.

Jessica took a step back from him. What I need is for you and your two weasels to get off my land. You aren’t even half the man my husband is. I would rather die alone than ever be married to the likes of you.

This time his temper got the better of him. This isn’t over, Jessica! You’ll be mine by the winter’s end whether you like it or not.

Don’t count on it, Jessica muttered after him as he remounted and kicked his horse into full gallop back toward town.

Ethan Carver melted back into the cover of the trees so as to remain unseen by Steven Thompson as he rode back toward town.

That bastard, Ethan silently raged to himself. Who does he think he is? Making a move on his woman while he was gone.

Of course, Ethan was sensible enough to realize that he had no one but himself to blame for all of this. If his foreman hadn’t turned on him during the cattle drive and stripped him of everything he owned it wouldn’t have taken him nearly so long to get back. He should have chosen his hired help more carefully.

The thought of returning to Jessica had been all that had kept him going at times. The memory of her laughing or the look of blissful oblivion on her face as he sunk into her was all he had needed to stay warm on those miserable nights out in the wild with not a shred of dignity left.

Up until he was about ten miles from home he had been eagerly anticipating seeing his wife again. Then it suddenly struck Ethan how long he had really been gone. Nine months was a long time for a woman to be alone in these parts. Especially when the woman thought her husband was dead or, worse, had left her.

Jessica could have remarried by now. Lord knows that she deserved someone better than he to protect and provide for her.

Unable to shake these thoughts for his head, Ethan had decided to observe Jessica undetected before just barging back into her life. If she had remarried he swore to himself that he would do the honorable thing and stay away from her. But he made no promises about not smashing in the face of her new husband.

The exchange between his wife and Steven Thompson had been all affirmation he needed. Jessica was still his. And it was high time that someone reminded Steven of the fact.

    ****

Jessica clanged pots and pans around with more noise than was really necessary to prepare her supper. That nasty man had an uncanny knack of irritating her. What irritated her even more was that through all his twisted words he was right.

She was lonely. She missed her husband desperately. She missed his smile and
