      James Jimmy Colburn shot back another whiskey and relished the way it burned his throat and stomach. Everything was numb. Well, almost everything.

      Another one, Jimmy?

      With an effort, Jimmy lifted his head just enough to look at the bartender. Stop askin’ me, Bart, he slurred, just keep ‘em comin’.

      Bart shook his head but refilled Jimmy’s glass anyway. He knew his friend wasn’t in the best frame of mind right now. It was now well known about town what Mrs. Colburn was doing these days.

      Jimmy looked at the amber liquid gratefully. Unlike his marriage, it still held so much promise. But despite the gloriously numb state he had achieved, the whiskey had failed to dull the pain in the one area that hurt the most: his heart.
