    Preface

    Waxing Darkness

Years ago, there was just a boy’s budding dream. Why is voting so important? the young child asked his father. It’s power. The power to change the world. The power to correct our mistakes. The power to choose and rule ourselves. It’s one of the things that makes our land so great, he answered.

Wow, if that’s true, why don’t other places just copy us and vote? he asked.

That won’t happen. The people in charge are evil and corrupt. They would never give the people such power. It would change the world and every government. Only revolution make that change, which is why every government tries to limit people’s power, the power to gather, and have weapons, and even knowledge. Never forget our blessings, his father told him.

    Wow, I am so lucky!

We both are. So, let’s follow our dreams son, he smiled.

    Now.

The boy had been inspired to embrace his country. He wanted to fly jets, but fell in love with a different bird. He saw a space launch. It was an incredible sight. He wanted to traverse the stars!

Soon, he was ready to pilot the new ship-like shuttle. It was the first of its kind. It wasn’t his first trip in space, but it was his first to the moon! Exploring new terrain like a true pioneer! This was his dream, only in America! That boy named Barry Jameson.

Barry Jameson was on his way to the moon on a last-minute mission! However, it wasn’t just his team. A group from the army or some government agency had been assigned to this mission for unclear reasons. Barry met him in the hall.

Jameson. My men will be coming. I trust you have no complaints that I need to be aware of, the rough commander said.

Commander Rich. None, as long as you understand that I am in charge out there. It’s not a place to question authority and guns won’t be much help, Jameson said.

We will be loaded once we land, the commander said.

Why? What’s the point of that? Jameson said seriously.

Need to know, as I understand it. Don’t worry about the men. They are experienced. We’ll be done in no time, Rich assured.

Experienced? To bullets maybe? Space is a lot less friendly than movies show. The isolation can drive you mad. You can feel trapped in the confines, but they’re the only thing keeping you from a horrible death. Just be sure they stay calm and follow my orders at launch, Jameson said.

Heh. Just fine. Looking forward to working with you, he smiled like some madman. He made Barry uneasy. They knew something that he did not. Surprises were not something you wanted in space.

Barry went to his two fellow astronauts. Julia, Johnathan! We’ve got five guests. Keep an eye on them and keep their weapons locked until we land. I don’t like this, but we can’t control every decision, Barry said.

Got it, Julia said quickly. She wasn’t the type to question orders or situations. We can’t trust them? Johnathan asked.

I . . . don’t know. Just stay sharp and we should be fine, Barry said.

Soon, the time for worry was past. They moved into the launch phase. They were all strapped inside the large ship. Do not throw up on me, Jack, Thomas said. He was a large man with dark skin known for honor and loyalty. Jack was younger with pale skin. He was known for quick thinking and scouting, not flying.

Quiet down! Eva said to them. She was an expert in electronics like the ones they were supposed to set up. She was very strict and serious.

We are go for lift-off! Jameson said.

The ride was rough, but soon the world was gone. It was replaced with emptiness. Soon, they landed upon the moon’s dark side. They all had to put on suits to go outside the protection of the ship. That hadn’t changed.

Here’s the mission as I understand it. Although, there is a chance for unknown elements, Barry said as he looked at the commander’s team. Why were they here?

We are to setup four devices around one of the dark side’s large craters. This will create a starting point for our base and scanning the terrain for information. We are the starting point to life on the moon. Let’s be safe but fast. The buggy’s will stay on and relay data to each other once they are setup. We’ll split into teams to go two at a time with some of us staying here to monitor, Barry continued.

Rich stepped up. Not quite Jameson. That’s why we’re here to make things go faster. Time is of the essence. We will be doing all four at once and leave as soon as possible. Eva will activate the device before takeoff, Rich added.

All at once? Why? Jameson asked.

Orders are orders, Rich responded simply.

Is there an enemy here? A race with the Russians again? Who is it this time? Jameson asked.

I don’t know what you are talking about. Teams of two for each device. One of mine with one of yours Jameson. Eva take the far one with Johnathan there. Jack is with Ms. Julia. Thomas and Roland on west one. Jameson and I will take the last, Rich ordered. Now wasn’t the time for a pointless argument. They were put here for a reason. Jameson would have to accept that for now.

They looked at Jameson to see if he would agree. I guess we have no choice. That’s going to make things much faster. Everyone stay sharp and don’t go too far on your own. We only need to cover a small area. Pair off, Barry said.

They moved slowly at first. Walking on the moon was difficult for some of them to get used to. Rich and his men all had special rifles.

What are those for? ET things? Johnathan asked.

Stay serious, kid, Eva said briskly.

Kid? What a bitch. She probably can’t keep a boyfriend like that, Johnathan thought.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Roland had little problem getting into position. They began to set the device in place. It was a buggy-like device with wheels so it was easy to move.

Elsewhere, another pair was moving. Jack, is it? Why are you guys here? Really? Julia asked as curiosity finally got her. Names aren’t for the dead. Keep talking on the battlefield and we will be, he said seriously.

Battlefield? We’re alone? Great, I get the crazy one, she sighed. He made no response. Jack’s eyes scanned the dark moon. Their lights cast a slim field of vision against the large darkness around them.

Soon, all devices were almost in place. Check in. Ready for activation Eva? Rich called over comm.

Eva and Johnathan were the furthest. What is that? Did you see something? Johnathan asked her as he gazed into the eerie stillness. Something seemed to move in the dark, but when he moved his light it was gone.

Hey! Get back here! Eva shouted. The darkness seemed to loom and silence
