    Chapter One

The last thing Darren Johnson needed was trouble. And that morning trouble came in the form of Jensen Brooks, his boss, hovering over him, as Darren sat behind his desk pretending to work. He couldn’t help but feel a little twinge of distaste for the man.

This is all wrong, Jensen said, tossing his papers onto the desk. Even the dates aren’t correct, and half the information is missing. He was fuming, but doing his best to maintain control. It was easy to tell whenever he was pissed about something from that one big vein that always bulged across his brow. Jensen must have been royally ticked off, because it looked as if the vein were about to burst at any second.

That’s the deal you asked about, along with the specifics, Darren replied, keeping his cool. After all, Jensen was the boss, and telling him where to stick it at this time moment wouldn’t suffice. Darren needed this job. It paid extremely well and the benefits were well above par. That’s what was in the file. I can’t give you what isn’t there in the first place.

    The contract’s missing.

It hasn’t even been sent over yet. Darren didn’t like Jensen’s tone. None of this was his fault. It wasn’t his problem if the company involved hadn’t been prompt in sending over the contract. Blame them, not him.

This was supposed to go to our lawyers today, Jensen added, crossing his arms.

Then the lawyers will have to wait until it arrives here first, Darren said, his tone curt and to the point. He forced a smile to help diffuse the stressful situation. Soon the day would be over and he’d be able to forget about this crazy man.

Do you think this is funny? Jensen questioned. I assure you it isn’t. This deal is a major one for the company. It isn’t something to take lightly. My ass is on the line here and so is yours. You’d better remember: without me, your position would become redundant.

Darren knew that Jensen was right. Mr. Brookes, I take nothing lightly when it comes to my job, but you came in practically yelling at me as if I did something to intentionally screw this up. He took a deep breath and decided it was better to just stop this conversation where it was. It was obvious that Jensen Brookes had something against him, which had been apparent from his first day at Wentworth Industries. It was never going to change, it seemed. Jensen’s dislike for him had been instantaneous and Darren’s best bet had always been to try and manage his boss, and his unprofessional behaviour, the best way he could…Darren took a deep breath before continuing. Is there anything else I can do for you? He sat back in the chair and awaited a response. He’d be the better man and take the higher road.

Jensen leaned forward and braced both his hands on the edge of the desk. "You think you’re so witty and smart with your quick responses? I don’t like your tone or attitude, and while I don’t
