About this ebook

Road Kill introduces Ken Kuhlken and Alan Russell, an odd pair of mystery writers on an epic journey to convince America's readers. to buy their books. But allied against them are dark forces perhaps led by their competitors. For evidence read on.

The Scientific Community Is in Agreement! “There are few subjects upon which the scientific community is in agreement, and the science fiction community is just as fractious. However, when it comes to Russell and Kuhlken we all concur: We hope they fall into a wormhole, end up on the other side of a distant galaxy, and are never heard from again!” – David Brin, bestselling author of The Postman

On My Top Ten List! “My biggest regret in retiring from the FBI is that I can’t put these two jokers behind bars. I wouldn’t be surprised if one day a lynch mob stormed one of their signings, and neither would I be surprised if law enforcement turned a blind eye to the people’s justice.” – Gene Riehl, author of Quantico Rules

    Introduction

    by Clifford Hickey

Some years back, midlist mystery authors Ken Kuhlken and Alan Russell needed money, in part to finance the road trips they took, excusing themselves from family by claiming these journeys were all about business.

Since midslist novels earn their creators less than they could’ve made collecting aluminum cans, Ken had taken to writing feature stories for the San Diego Reader, a weekly tabloid that paid him far more than he was worth.

Ken supposed that if he and Alan chronicled a road trip or two, the Reader would buy the story. He didn’t know the contempt in which the Reader’s otherwise congenial editor held Alan Russell, ever since he had accused her of stealing story ideas he submitted.

When poetry publisher Terry Hertzler heard Ken and Alan read from their tale at Hickey’s Bookstore, he asked to publish a chapbook edition. He named it Road Kill, whipped out some first editions, and paid the authors enough to put air in the tires of Ken’s Explorer. Soon, Ken and Alan were back on the road, heading for the Left Coast Crime Conference in Boulder, Colorado, where Alan would win the Lefty Award for best humorous mystery. He also won a traffic citation while blazing through Utah. And, in Boulder, Ken had backed into a parked car. Now they needed money to avoid imprisonment.

So they stationed themselves in the conference hotel bar, mooched drinks and convinced the sufficiently inebriated to buy Road Kill. Also stationed in the bar was Kinky Friedman, puffing on a stogie. His novel Road Kill appeared a couple years later. This reporter will draw no conclusions, as he is a fan of Kinky’s music and supports his campaign to become governor of Texas.

    Road Kill

The following press release, which was totally ignored by all San Diego media, was the kick-off announcement to Ken Kuhlken and Alan Russell's Universal Book Tour.

    THE KEN AND ALAN SHOW

Kenallan was a world famous orangutan who resided for many years in the San Diego Zoo. He was featured in many articles and shows, and touted as the Houdini of the simian world. Kenallan was an escape artist.

Ken Kuhlken would never be mistaken for Kenallan. He has much less hair. Kuhlken also claims to have a flexible thumb. The only thing Kuhlken ever escaped was the draft.

Alan Russell is also not an orangutan, even though he has aspirations. Russell knows something about apes, however, knowledge gained in part during his book tours with fellow mystery writer Kuhlken (he also wrote about gorillas - the hairy kind - in his first novel, No Sign of Murder). If prompted, or even slightly urged, Russell might attempt to prove that Kuhlken is the missing link.

San Diego has the dubious distinction of being home to both Ken and Alan (hereafter referred to as Kenallan). Both authors have published a number of mystery novels and amassed more wonderful reviews than they have book sales. They will be glad to read
