I thought this was just going o be another Twilight story but it proved me wrong. I ended up loving Rose because if her personality and the way she would do anything to protect Lissa. I ending up falling in love with all of the characters and feeling that even though these "creatures" in the stories we hear are just like us but just have a "few" more extreme problems than we do.

I had heard good things about this book and was really looking forward to reading it. I thought it was a good story. I liked Rose, the guardian in training. The bond she has with Lissa is really interesting. Lissa is being tormented throughout the book, and when we finally find out who is behind it, I was totally shocked. I never saw it coming.

For some reason, this book never really clicked with me. I liked it, and had fun reading it, but I just didn't think it was a great book. Having said that, I will probably read the next book in the series, to see if it gets more exciting.

*Originally Reviewed at Witchmag's Boekenplank*To be honest, I never had any intention of reading Vampire Academy. There was never a spark of interest whenever I saw this book or read the blurb. As I’m more of a werewolf and shifter lover, I tend to pass on books with only cold-blooded, bloodthirsty vampires. Then I read that Vampire Academy would be turned into a movie. So what did I do when I saw this book in the library a couple of days ago? Of course I took it with me and before I knew it I was hooked! Wow, I can’t believe that I waited this long to read it, that I once thought it wouldn’t be worthy of my time! I’m so glad I finally decided to take a chance ^^What got me hooked on Vampire Academy is the mystery that can be found in this book. From the first page you only get tiny pieces off an immense puzzle and it’s up to you to make all the right connections. Be careful, the smallest of details can be of great importance later. Oh and even when you think you’ve completed the puzzle, don’t be sure. Unexpected events can always happen, pieces can always transform and keep you on the edge of your seat. The ending, obviously, was one BIG surprise, a GIANT revelation and a huge cliffhanger. Oh, how I love it when books manage to surprises me so completely. Even with my love / hate relationship with cliffhangers ^^The world that Richelle Mead created fit perfectly with the story and enhanced my reading pleasure. All those different rules and habits. The tasks that the Guardians and Moroi have. The horrors that are the Strigoi. How vampires get their daily dose of blood. The rules dhampires are bound to. Richelle Mead obviously spent some time in creating this amazing world. A world that definitely made reading the more interesting. I’m already looking forward to my next visit ^^I can’t write this review without mentioning Rose, our heroine. Above all I loved how human, how real she felt. She’s just your every other teenager who has to make life altering decisions. She does not always chose the right one, but hey, she’s “human” and not perfect! Rose is also one of the few female leads that are able to ADMIT and APOLOGIZE when she makes a mistake, albeit reluctantly ^^ She’s everything I want to read about in a young adult main character: sassy, knows when NOT to follow the rules, brave and utterly loyal to those she loves. Oh and most importantly: is good in witty and snarky remarks. I look forward to spending more time with her!Conclusion4 HEARTS. A superb book, that I unfortunately ignored for a long time. With a thrilling and gripping story, an intriguing mystery included. Set in a world full of vampires and dhampires. Featuring a brave girl trying to protect her best friend, even at the cost of herself. A story that I can recommend to everyone who loves to read about the paranormal, even those who usually like to read about shifters ;)

For a (very fluffy) young adult novel about vampires, this is pretty darn awesome! Mead is an excellent plotter, and I kind of love the main character. The setting/mythos is a little fanfiction-y, but she really carries it off rather well. I think I'd like to read more of this series.

This is the second time I've read this book and I still enjoy it. I know the series get better so this isn't the epitome of the series but it is still awesome. I don't normally enjoy young adult books but I have a soft spot for this series. It's kinda awesome. Can't wait to finish it all the way to the end this time. :)

The world-building here is fantastic. I had seen the movie, but hadn't read the book before. The two are actually very similar as far as the general story goes, which is good, but I was happy to find that there was indeed far more depth and engagement to the book than the movie had.

This is a very decent YA novel about vampires. I can understand the series’ popularity as it has all the necessary components of a strong female lead, a best friend, romance and most importantly, very good worldbuilding. Although I won’t continue with the series, it’s a well written and enjoyable first book. Glad I read it.

Really loved this, it was an amazing book. I really liked the fact that Rose was about as far from a Mary Sue as you can get. We need more YA heroines like that. Also Dimitri. Enough said. (Roza! Hihi) Love those two! :D

I saw a trailer for a movie called Vampire Academy ages and ages ago and even though it looked super corny I knew I would have to watch it. It was exactly what I wanted it to be...and then I discovered it was based off of a book series by Richelle Mead. Firstly, the makers of that film were very faithful to the first book in the series (a rarity, I think you'll agree). Secondly, if you're a fan of books which take place in boarding schools then you're likely to find this series right up your alley. Thirdly, Mead has created a new kind of vampire lore which I always find enjoyable especially as a long-time fan of vampire stories/media. Essentially, she's developed a whole subculture where 'vampire' is not even the preferred label. Fourthly, if you enjoyed Twilight because of the romantic aspect then you need look no further because judging from the first book in the series Vampire Academy is the racy cousin of Twilight that your mom warns you about. If you want a more academic vampire story along the lines of Anne Rice or Bram Stoker this probably isn't going to fill the void for you. However, if you're looking for a book that ticks off the "magical beings who act like bratty teens at a super secret boarding school" box then you need look no further because Vampire Academy definitely fits the bill. I haven't yet decided if I'll continue the series but if I do I'll be sure to let you know if it manages to stay at the bar that was raised by this first book. 8/10

Vampire academy was a great start to what assume will be an even better series. The YA book can be enjoyed by all ages. If you like magic and vampires it's a must read. I love that it puts a different spin on vampires.

I thought the movie was funny, so I finally decided to read the book it was based on because everyone said it was way better than the movie, and I wasn't disappointed. I loved Lissa and Rose's relationship. They felt very real and were written in a way that they actually sound like teenagers instead of an adult trying to sound "hip". I also really liked the world in this series-vampires controlling elements, and having a hidden society within our own. As steamy as Rose and Dimitri's relationship was I LOVED Lissa and Christian. They were perfect together!

I really really really enjoyed this book. I love the main character and her sense or sarcastic humour (much like my own). She doesn't take crap from no one, and she is loyal and protective of her best friend. Even though I guess that is supposed to happen because she is her Guardian and has to basically throw herself in the way of any danger.
The only thing that is bugging me, and I'm sure this will change since this is the first book, is the relationship between Rose and Dimitri. I love the relationship...when they kind of sort of, maybe had one. I HATE that he doesn't want to be in it, even though his logic makes complete sense. Stupid logic. You aren't supposed to enter into matters of the heart.

I haven't really read the description of the boonk , i heard so much about it that i just picked it up and read it without knowing where it's leading.I've been in some kind of a reading slump , not really , but i couldn't enjoy any book recently . but boooy i LOVED this one!(p.s : what's up with the ugly covers?)I didn't get into it very quickly , i was half way through the book to know i liked it , and that's when things picked up .I liked the writing style , and the pacing of the story .The characters were likable as well ,Rose is badass , i loved her and immensely enjoyed her snarky comments and her short tempered attitude .descriptionLissa was okay , although her powers are admirable , i didn't connect with her. she's the nice girl next door.Christian , he's that hot guy who doesn't know he is hot , he just blends with the shadows , which makes him 10 times hotter ( right????)I loved Christian and Lissa together , i was rooting for them!descriptionDimitri , i just have a thing for Russian men okay! ah i loved his character , ( that Lust spell scene thought ! ) i'm sure we all enjoyed him. he's so ... aghgdk!descriptionNatalie , don't wanna spoil anything , but , Damn girl you blew my mind.Mia , i just wanted to hit her so hard throughout the bookdescriptionThe plot was a bit surprising , and fun . i do believe it could have been better but i enjoyed it anyway , the fighting scenes were also okay ( also could have been better) .I loved the ending , all the thrill was there .and i can't stop thinking about how Dimitri and Rose should be together !I want to study in this school !!!and i think i would've made one hell of a Dhampir girl . ( not a big fan of Moroi and the royals)descriptionI would recommend this book for YA fans , who are looking for a fun easy read , i'm glad i gave it a try!I'm just not sure if i loved it enough to continue this series , what do you think, should i continue the other books? or does it go down hill from this one?

Vampire Academy is the first in a series of Young Adult books about vampires and their protectors (in this world, born vampires need protection from created vampires). The story is told through the eyes of Rose, a dhampir (half vamp, half human) who dedicates her life to protecting Lissa, her Moroi best friend and born vampire princess. They have an intense bond and will do anything to protect each other. The story opens with them on the run, hiding out in Portland, Oregon after having run away from Vampire Academy. Vampire Academy Guardians (those sworn to protect the Moroi) find the teens and bring them back to the school. Throughout the course of the book, it is revealed what the girls are running from and what they are to each other. Richelle Mead did a fantastic job drawing out the suspense. Information about the characters is revealed slowly, but not in a boring, hurry up and get to the good stuff way. Rose is very well written and accessible. Her friendship with Lissa is touching and her interaction with authority figures is entertaining. Vampire Academy is like Hogwarts for vampires. The VA teens deal with the same day-to-day dramas that every high school student faces. The VA teens just have to deal with the added hassle of their enemies having fangs and slightly more dangerous social and political ambitions. This was a fun, enjoyable easy read. I would recommend this to fans of vampire lit and Harry Potter.

Many of my re-reads in recent years haven’t held up all that well so I had pretty low expectations for my second go round with Vampire Academy, but happily, I actually feel like I enjoyed it more this time, it left me eager to finally move on to the other books in the series. There’s pretty perfect pacing here, nothing that felt like filler, information revealed without info-dumping, it’s a total page turner yet the storytelling and the character development aren’t hurried. There are two romances in this one, Lissa and Christian, his perceived darkness and her tortured soul made so much sense together, plus they share undeniable chemistry. The other romance I am iffier on, maybe they’ll win me over in later books (especially if Rose ages a few years in the process), for now, the age difference has me hesitant about them together but I did like Dimitri and I liked that neither he nor this book shied away from how problematic their attraction is, goodness knows I’ve read plenty of romances where they just let problematic issues slide without mention, I liked that this addresses it. I’m not a traditionalist when it comes to things like vampire lore, if I’m going to read about vampires I want an author to bring their own fresh spin, I want to see their imagination at work and Richelle Mead succeeds wonderfully at that here with the two warring factions, the guardians, the feedings that basically create drug addicts, Lissa’s mental health, etc, it’s a really rich well-crafted world, something I definitely appreciated more in this second reading. My favorite thing about this book remains the same though, Rose and Lissa’s friendship, I guess it could be argued that maybe they go to an unhealthy extreme for one other, but when a little too often women in pop culture are presented as stabbing each other in the back (it happens in this book, too), there’s just something so refreshing about seeing two young women actually have each other’s backs.

That is theoretically why you are reading the review after all.

I didn't love it and I didn't hate it either. I just feel kind of like “well okay I read that.”

Most of the character to me seemed a bit vapid, I did like Dmitri the Guardian of course he is Russian and not a bad guy so I tend to like when Russian's get a good guy role (wait for a rant about that on my other blog). Overall I think I will go ahead and read the next book at some point in the future but I am not rapid to do it and I am not sure I am sold 100% on this series. Not good not bad just kind of in the middle of the road for me.

Only the truest of best friend can protect you from your immortal enemies....

Lissa Dragomir is the Moroi princess, an mortal vampire with a rare gift for harassing the skills of earth magic. She must be protected at all cost hours a day from the Strigoi - the fiercest of the vampire race, the ones who never die. With the powerful blend of human and vampire blood that flows through the veins of Rose Hathaway, Lissa's best friend and makes her a dhampir. Rose's life is dedicated to the perilous and dangerous life of protecting Lissa from the Strigo, who have a hel bent mission to make Lissa one of them.

However after two year of freedom for Lissa and Rose, the have been caught and forcefully dragged back to St Valdimirs Academy. This academy is a vampire school for royalty and their guardian to be. The academy is hidden in the deepest forests fin Montana and is protected by a magical force field. Inside the iron gates which should be a sanctuary for all however life is fraught with danger and this means that the Strigoi are always close by.

Rose and Lissa must navigate this dangerous world, by confronting the temptations of forbidden love while not letting their guard down. And all this has to be done with the evil undead who want to make Lissa one of them forever.

Anything with a vampire sucks me in and i devour the books with this subject. It has a different take on vampire life by looking at half-breeds and the immortal vampires are the enemies in this world. I enjoyed the way this was written however i did find that i kept wanting a bit of the back story for the previous 2 years. It reads like a distant cousin of Vampire Diaries and i love that about it. It also has the injection of romance for the two leading characters, which helps build the story and lead into the rest of the books in series. I will definitely be adding the rest of the series to my TBR list.

I'm gonna start by saying that the movie is one of my favorite guilty pleasures, that I watch it almost regularly and have a blast every single time. Part of that is the sheer stupidity of much of the plot, as well as the actually sort of interesting and cool lore. Having now read the book, I can say that the movie was surprisingly accurate. Shame we didn't get the rest of the series.

Now, the book itself was great in the way reading Twilight was great: I already found the movie silly and enjoyable, so the book wasn't that much of a stretch, but there were some things that bothered me upon reflection.

First, we meet Professor Severus Snape—I mean Guardian Stan Alto—who publically ridicules Harry Potter—I mean Rose Hathaway—on her lack of Dhampir knowledge in a classroom setting. Then we hear tell of Professor Sybill Trelawney—I mean Sonya Karp—who was an eccentric teacher who said vaguely threatening and ominous things but was generally regarded as a bit of a joke to the students.

Second, Rose is an unlikable jerk. I've heard that this book has a great anti-slut-shaming message, but uh, where tho? Because all I see is that line when Mia is outed as a "slut":

Mason: "You could start telling people if you wanted to. We could make a banner."
Rose: With as many times as Mia had called me a slut and a whore? Not a bad idea. "You got any markers and paper?"
So basically because Mia actually has sex and Rose doesn't, Rose is allowed to judge? Because Mia was born into a low position in life and had to work the system to get to where she was, even if it makes her a hypocrite, Rose has the right to throw it all in her face and push her down? Wtf? Whatever happened to "be the better man" or "common decency"?

    Third, Vasilisa is the Avatar.

Such an easy, fun read. Rose was a great protagonist, full of sass and humour, but also possessed with strong purpose. Even though she was often almost playing two characters, (by virtue of spending so much time in Lissa's head!) it didn't seem to matter. I'm not a fast reader but flew through this one.

I am not really into young adult book but I have heard many good things about this series and I already had it on my shelf so I decided to give it a chance. I was pretty surprised by actually how good it is.

The thing I usually don't like in young adult books are the immature characters and tones of teen drama. But this is not a case in Vampire Academy. Rose, Lissa, Dimitri and Christian are quite interesting characters and mature enough not to drive me mad despite the whole romance parts. And there is less drama that I expected.

I also enjoyed the world created by the author. It's unique and refreshing. And the plot is interesting and well-developed.

I'm thinking about raising my note up to 4 stars. And I will definitely go with the second book in this series.
