About this ebook

On top of spending most of her time in a bunkerlike safe house and having her dates hijacked by a formidable Fae bodyguard, Faeriewalker Dana Hathaway is in for some more bad news: the Erlking and his pack of murderous minions known as the Wild Hunt have descended upon Avalon. With his homicidal appetite and immortal powers, the Erlking has long been the nightmare of the Fae realm. A fragile treaty with the Faerie Queen, sealed with a mysterious spell, is the one thing that keeps him from hunting unchecked in Avalon, the only place on Earth where humans and Fae live together. Which means Dana's in trouble, since it's common knowledge that the Faerie Queen wants her – and her rare Faeriewalker powers – dead. The smoldering, sexy Erlking's got his sights set on Dana, but does he only seek to kill her, or does he have something much darker in mind?

If I haven't made myself clear with "The Top 3 Books of 2010" and "Glimmerglass Review 5/5", then I don't know how to express my love for Jenna Black's Faeriewalker series. This is already the second book in the series and I'm still feeling the love and joy I had for the first one. The only sad thing to tell everyone is I was not able to get a actual paperback copy of the book from the store or amazon. The store hasn't had it in for a week and I'm to impatient to wait and I didn't want to spend extra money, for shipping, from amazon Canada. So in the end, in dire desperation, I used the kindle. I only use the kindle in extreme needs as I enjoy reading paperback/hardbacks more. In the end I was able to complete Shadowspells in less then a day and I'm already sadden by the fact that the next book doesn't come out till July 2011.Shadowspell picks up right where Glimmerglass ended. We're given good background info on what happened in the previous novel and reunited with our favorite characters: Dana, Ethan (the playboy), Kimber, Finnm Keane, Mom and Dad. New characters such as Connor, The Hunt and The Erlking appear.I must admit admit Dana got a tad bit rebellious in this novel. A part of me wants to yell at her and complain, saying that if she just listened then none of the bad stuff would of happened. And since she didn't listen that this should be a life's lesson for her. But in the end she is a teenager and I would have done the same thing.Ethan's playboy attitude becomes problematic in Shaowspell and with all that occur in the book it will certainly test his ability to be non-player in the third book.Ok this is not really a spoiler but I'm seriously wondering: Will Dana and Keane ever hook up? Or will they just fighting with each other? It was nice to see a bit of Keane's soft side and more to his character in this novel but I'm seriously wondering if will ever see more Dana/Keane.My favorite character, who made me swoon, was the Erlking. I definitely can't wait to see how his character further develops in the third story. In the previous novel I had troubles picturing Avalon, luckily in Shadowspell that wasn't the case. I really, honestly, can't find anything wrong with this book. I know a book is never perfect, but I can't find one single thing that bother me. I thought the plot was well crafted and gave the perfect twist. I only figured there was something more to the Erlking's deal when he mention what he wanted. I was surprised that Dana didn't question further before making the sacrifice. But now that, that's happened it will give more drama to the third book.I think the Erlking like's Dana. I really think he does. He may be tricky and like everyone else in Avalon uses Dana for her powers. But he always got more planned then he lets on. He plays his cards right. And everything he does in return protects Dana. Though I could be totally wrong about this.Overall Shadowspell was FANTASTIC, MESMERIZING, A PAGE TURNER & will have the readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next.

This is the middle book in the Glimmerglass trilogy. Dana has discovered that coming to stay with her fae father in Avalon to get away from the responsibilities of caring for her alcoholic mother is not the positive change she was hoping for. Discovering that she is a rare faeriewalker and that both queen of Faerie want her dead doesn't make her life easier. Dana is currently going stir-crazy in the secret underground bunker that is her safe house. However, so many people want her dead that it is the only safe place for her to be. Adding to those who want her dead is the Erlking who leads the Wild Hunt. Because of a pact with the faerie queens, he can't hunt indiscrimately but that doesn't stop him from instilling terror. The Erlking wants something from Dana and captures Ethan to be a part of his Wild Hunt. Dana tries to outwit the Erlking to get Ethan back but seventeen years of life experience doesn't stand up very well to the over two thousand years the Erlking has. Dana makes a deal which frees Ethan from the Hunt but it still leaves him as the Erlking's minion and it leaves Dana needing to fulfill her deal with the Erlking even though she learns what the Erlking didn't tell her about the deal.I like the world building in this series. I like Dana who is a strong, smart, independent character even when she is out of depth dealing with the ancient fae. Fans of contemporary fantasy will enjoy this series.

Dana Hathaway is a Faeriewalker and that means she has the ability to cross the boundaries between the mortal world and the realm of the Faeries. Not only does she have access to both worlds, she also has the ability to bring any weaponry or power across and that means she is a danger to the Fae and humans alike. Not only does this put a huge target on her back, but it also brings her to the attention of the Erlking, an immortal being whose allegiance is as arbitrary as his need to hunt and kill. To stay alive, she must keep one step ahead of the Faerie Queens as well as the Erlking and his huntsmen, and she must accomplish all this while trying to decipher her feelings toward a boy she can't quite decide wants her heart or just wants her powers. I'll admit I left this one of the TBR stack from the library for a long time. I didn't quite recall the storyline in the first book of the series that might have contributed to the delay. Once I did actually pick it up, I was pleasantly surprised at just how good the series is. There is your typical YA drama with lots of romance, love triangles, and emotional outbursts flying every which way, but in between all that is an action packed, dramafied storyline and more importantly, characters that had depth. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns sprinkled throughout and definitely more than enough substance to justify a third book. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read and a series worth exploring if YA paranormal romance/fantasy is your cup of tea.

I enjoyed this just as much as Glimmerglass. The additional drama created by the Erlking and his Wild Hunt was great. It will be fun to see how things sort out in the next one!

I think this might be the best YA paranormal series I have read (though, I will admit that I have not read a large amount of them, but I have read a few).

Dana is a great, no holds barred kind of girl. Very indepentant and doesn't take no for an answer. We see a different side to Ethan and Keane. There is also a new character in the Erlking (who leads the Wild Hunt). He gives new meaning to the being a very bad person. Everyone is petrofied of him, including both of the Faerie queens.

There are several plot twists in this story, which makes waiting for Sirensong a long wait. Luckly it is only a few months away.

Raced through this one today, wish SIRENSONG was out already! SHADOWSPELL is just a quick commercial break away from GLIMMERGLASS, and I certainly wish I could tune in next week for the next installment. Great action, continued development of characters, and not much retread. I'm invested in these characters and interested to see what happens next.

This book was just as good as expected after reading Glimmerglass. Once again I read way too fast and finished quickly. I'm really loving the story. Also, what I'd like to point out most about this series, and this book especially, is that even though it's YA, it doesn't just entertain the tween crowd. There is cussing and very watered down sensual scenes. I'm not saying this is bad at all! I really like that the writer does this because as an adult that reads a lot of young adult books, sometimes I miss some of the adult... feeling... i guess is the word. This series is a great read for adults as well as teens.Once again this story is written very well. The narrative seems more personal and really easy to relate to. There was even a point when reading this that I got so into it that when something not-so-expected happened my jaw actually fell open. I love being able to get into a good book!I really like Dana. And The Erlking sounds... yummy. In a dark way. Keane is probably my favorite male character. And I have to admit that Ethan kind of annoys me.I can't wait to see what happens next in the Sirensong. Again, I can't stress enough to fantasy readers that this is definitely a series worth giving a chance.

Unfortunately, "Shadowspell" was a disappointment to me and that is really a feat seeing as I rated "Glimmerglass" with just three stars. I knew exactly what I was getting into with "Shadowspell", or so I thought. If any book ever suffered from "middle book syndrome" I believe this one is definitely diseased with it. The interesting content that filled the first novel was just not present in this second book to keep me from overlooking the poor and immature writing style. The narrator, Dana, is almost eighteen yet she has the narration skills of a twelve or thirteen year old. The book is packed with over- descriptions. Yes, Faes are beautiful but you don't have to remind us every time you introduce a Faerie. How absurdly redundant and annoying this is, at one point she literally breaks from narration to say "(redundant, I know right?) and I wondered how the Jenna Black herself saw this and failed to revise the voice of this novel at all. It seems Jenna Black failed to really connect with her audience and recognize how intelligent a teenager would be. I believe she missed her mark. About three-quarters through the book I began thinking that Jenna Black would have done better to remove the sexual suggestions from her book and target it towards a younger audience, such as middle school girls. Shortly after that I was hit with an intense sexual scene, more than I've ever read in a YA novel. I was shocked as most of my adult reading doesn't even have this descriptive sexual content! If I was a parent, I don't think I would let my daughter read this book if she were under fifteen or maybe even sixteen. Though, at that age she might find the writing just a bit too immature. I really hoped that the story would pick up and go somewhere, but it never did. She could have at least taken this novel to further develop the seemingly flat city of Avalon. The third book in the series just came out and I do plan on picking this up and hopefully it will not disappoint as "Shadowspell" did.

Thank you Jenna Black! Thank you for improving in this book. I wanted so badly to like the first book in the series (Glimmerglass) but honestly thought very negatively about it. Everything that I didn't like about the first book (an underdeveloped plot, unlikable characters, uninteresting storyline) got a whole (and I mean WHOLE lot better in her second installment. The introduction of the Elking provided a breath of fresh air into the storyline- with more drama and excitement for the reader. I will say, though, that the book took a PG-13 (or dare I say R?) turn in the last 1/6 of the book= I was pretty surprised by it. I kept wondering if I was reading a ya book or an adult fantasy story. This book is not for the feint of heart or for younger readers.I will absolutely be picking up the next volume in July! When i read the first book in the series i thought it was ok and decided to give a chance to the second book in this series. i'm very happy i decided to do that. the book awesome. i think it was full of events from start to finish. Sometimes i got upset with the main characters for all the silly mistakes she made but in the end, she is teenager so it is expected.i was excited to see she was starting to get a sense of her magic and i'm hoping she learns how to use it on the next book. Everything is a mess with her life and the commitment she made with the Erlking in order to save Ethan, i hope she is able to break out of it and be able to go through without dying or losing her powers.I also hope she is able to really fall in love or find true love.

Great second book. Though I would have assumed that with all the crap that happened to her in the first book she would have learned her lesson and started trusting someone. Well I guess that was wishful thinking cause she is still very much secretive and deceptive in this book. However there are bigger and better fay then her at deception. And Dana is bound and determined to get herself killed or worse in this book. If you looked up stupid in the dictionary there would be a picture of this character. Since she is a teenager though and not very well versed in the fae I gave her a break on being stupid. Though if she keeps it up in her next book I'm going to have to give it a big hurl out my top floor. Lets just hope Dana, Her Father, Ethan and his sister can find a way to get her out of the mess she made with the Erlking.

Dana has spent most of her life being responsible, taking care of her mother and looking after their home. Never having lived with rules before Dana has known nothing but freedom, however after moving to Avalon Dana has found that she must give up her freedom. Living in a 'safe-house' underground is not exactly the ideal home life she had come to Avalon in search of but with two faerie queens, a crazy aunt and a whole mess of fae out to kill her Dana has little choice but to put up with her confinement. That is until she finds ways of sneaking out. When the Erlking enters Avalon things for Dana go from bad to worse. There are hidden secrets from the past that threaten to be the downfall of Dana and those secrets may be revealed to late to save Dana from a fate worse then death, or from death itself. As the line between enemy and ally becomes blurred Dana is finding it increasingly hard to know who she can trust, but that doesn't stop her risking her own life to save the lives of those she cares for.Shadowspell continues the story of Dana, a Faeriewalker and somewhat confused heroine, who is brave enough to enter the enemies lair to bargain with her virtue but who still manages to naively demean herself with words for actions she has yet to take, nor does she intend to. Having never been kissed, unless provoked by magic, Dana is unnecessarily self recriminating, but despite this misguidedness there is a captivating plot filled with lies, loss, heartache, death and magic. If you've read book one you won't want to miss this.

After thoroughly enjoying Glimmerglass far more than a expected, I was eager to snatch up Shadowspell. I even dropped what I was doing on a Sunday afternoon and (after checking) rather to my local library to pick it up (and thankfully it was available). Sadly, I quickly found that Shadowspell was not nearly as good as its predecessor. Slow, seemingly without a real focus and, unfortunately, just didn't have any real big draw for me. I found myself bored for much of the novel and, frankly, wondered why I was so excited to pick it up in the first place (picky, I know).Shadowspell basically took everything I liked about Glimmerglass and threw it out the window. Instead, readers are treated to a romance-heavy, somewhat cliche plotline where Faeriewalker Dana finds herself the object of affection of a number of guys. While trying to deal with that, she's got to juggle a bodyguard while the Erlking and his minions bring the Wild Hunt to Avalon. Not only does the Erlking become interested in Dana, but both Faerie Queens, Seelie and Unseelie, want Dana dead.Virtually no politics are woven into this story. There's a sprinkling, I'll admit (compared to Glimmerglass), but it was completely overshadowed by the love triangle. It's not like I haven't read about enough love triangles in YA books. It has doesn't help that the story starts out in dulls-ville and takes a little too long to become interesting. In fact, I didn't get engaged in the story until about 100 pages in. It was just a little jarring after the edge-of-your-seat action that began the previous novel.Sad to say, but I think I'm done with this series.

The smoldering, sexy Erlking’s got his sights set on Dana, but does he only seek to kill her, or does he have something much darker in mind? (Synopsis provided by good reads)This is the only book by this author I have read. I really books with the Fae in them, so I was eager to read this one. The first thing that I noticed, was that Dana is a very strong character. She keeps it together and can stand her ground, which is great, it’s important for the YA world to have strong female characters when too often the genre is packed with Mary-sue and clingy whiny characters. Dana is a breath of fresh air! This book has it dark parts, but Dana deals with it all wonderfully, I don’t know of many adult characters from other books that could deal with things half as good as she does. There is one scene of an attempted rape which can be hard for some people to read so that needs to be known so people can make a decision to read or not if they can’t read scenes like that. This is such an intriguing book and I think the author does a great job in her writing, the dialogue was amazing and the character development was really good as well. This is not a typical YA novel, it’s a lot more dark and similar to books you’d find in the adult fantasy section of your local bookstore.I would recommend this book to anyone! It’s such a great read and it reads fast, because you want to know what happens next. I am looking forward to more books by this author.Over all rating***** 5 out of 5 starsCover art:I love the cover art!Obtained:I won this book in a giveaway thank you so much Abigail!

This book is filled with major drama. Boy drama. Girl drama. Family drama. So much so that I loved it! Dana is once again trying to help everyone out. Even at the cost of her being in danger and her getting in trouble she does anything she can do to help. What I like most is the strength that Dana has. I love seeing characters who fight till the very end. She did not give up when she was trapped at the safe house, she did not give up when her father threaten her. She did what she had to do to save the ones that she loves. The love interest in the book were good. We see Dana struggling with relationships and what she should do. Dana's heart is being pulled in all kinds of directions. Dana is very mature and is a character like no other. In the end she made a willing sacrifice to save the one she loves. Even if it cost her.Ms. Black left nothing out in this book. Everything is written perfectly and smoothly. The emotions flowed through this book so good I could not stopped turning pages. I felt everything and more. I can not wait to see what the next book will reveal.

"Glimmerglass" really stood out as a great YA book, in my opinion. I am more than happy to report that the follow up "Shadowspell" is at least VERY close to as good. In this volume, Dana is under lock and key, because her aunt is still at large. Then a new, maybe bigger, threat comes to town. The Erlking is a big, hulking, kind of hot immortal, who has a constant craving to commit murder. I must say I really enjoyed this character, I think there are a lot of layers to him and I like the twist he adds to the story. A lot of the other other relationships seem to change/and/or move forward here. Again, its almost hard to review "Shadowspell" because I don't want to give anything away. This is one of those books that flies by so quickly, you could reasonably read it in one sitting. I will say Dana gets herself into quite a bind that is certain to impact the future novels. I am very eager to read the next book.

Quick & Dirty: This second installment takes place in a unique world with fascinating and complex characters. Political machinations, intrigue and romance provide readers an exciting story.Opening Sentence: Going on a date with a bodyguard hanging over your shoulder sucks. The Review:The story of Dana Hathaway’s bewitching journey continues in Shadowspell, but the stakes have gotten much higher with the debut of a new villain, The Erlking. The Erlking, leader of the Wild Hunt, has descended upon Avalon. The murderous Hunt terrifies mortals and Fae alike because The Erlking can’t be killed. Known as “the nightmare of the Fae realm,” it’s difficult to fathom a way to defeat The Erlking and his Huntsmen. Unfortunately for Dana, The Erlking crosses her path and sets his sights upon her. Dana already has to worry about the Queens of Faerie wanting her dead, now she has to deal with the deadly Erlking who wants her Faeriewalker powers, and something much more sacred…Shadowspell surprised me in many ways. While I enjoyed Glimmerglass and thought that it was a good read, this second installment raises the bar. The second installment in the Faeriewalker series is captivating. This well crafted story continues with the unique world introduced in Glimmerglass. Ms. Black does an excellent job of layering enough complexity onto this story and its characters, and building enough tension, and suspense that you could choke on it.Dana continues to get under my skin. Generally, I can’t enjoy a book when I have major issues with the protagonist. I warmed up to Dana a bit, but I still find her to be wildly immature and unreasonably reckless. I’m waiting for her to be strong, assertive, independent, smart, and responsible without feeling as if she has to buck the system just to get her way or to prove a point.Much of the excitement in this book revolves around The Hunt. I can’t give too much away because it’s a crucial plot point, but suffice it to say that the concept is beautifully executed. It really sets the tone for the story that unfolds. The mythology is still developing, and a fair amount is revealed. We don’t get much more by way of fey court politicking, but the stage has been set for the next installment. It’s clear that Dana won’t be able to escape either court unscathed. The romance is simply breathtaking. Ethan is still devilishly handsome and generally up to no good. He is constantly trying to entice Dana with his flirting and heavy petting. The Erlking is just an all around bad guy, not to be trifled with. He dominates, consumes and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. I love the addition of his character. The Erlking doesn’t try to justify his evil. He’s very raw, passionate and vicious because that’s him. He knows that he can easily crush you, but he likes to toy with his prey. Doing the dance of death and extending his victims torture just a little bit longer, you’ll beg for the sweet release from the fear that he instills in you. He thrives off of the Hunt, and you should hope that he never has to hunt you. I should also note that there is a taboo element with respect to The Erlking’s desire for Dana. He’s essentially a man and she’s just an innocent teenage girl. I fear that I already know how this will end in the next book.Overall, Shadowspell is a novel that you will devour. This compelling and addictive story will have you flipping pages long into the night. I can’t wait to read the next Faeriewalker book, Sirensong, which hit shelves on July 5, 2011. You don’t want to miss this wonderful installment in the series.Notable Scene:The Erlking’s eyes sparked with triumph, and he slid his huge hand up the back of my neck until he was cradling my head in his palm. He leaned down, and it took every ounce of my will not to break free of his grip and run for my life. His lips were surprisingly gentle when they touched mine, and I felt a moment of relief, thinking this chase brush of lips would do the trick. Then the magic speared through me. Suddenly, I no longer felt the prickling on my skin-it seemed to be coming from inside me instead.I gasped, and the Erlking gasped, too. Then he crushed his lips down on mine and pulled my body against his. I went unresisting into his embrace as the magic tingled in my chest and belly. I opened my mouth, almost begging for the taste of the Erlking’s tongue, and he gave it to me.He kissed me so hard it almost hurt, and I hadn’t even the faintest thought of resisting him. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed myself against him, feeling the hot, hard evidence that he was ready and eager to fulfill the bargain right this moment. I moaned into his mouth as pleasure zinged from my head to my toes and back again. It was the most glorious thing I’d ever felt, and I wanted more. There was no part of me, mind or body, that remembered I was kissing the bad guy and that I didn’t really want to be doing what I was doing. The magic reached a crescendo that would have made me scream if the Erlking’s tongue hadn’t been in my mouth. I grabbed a double handful of his hair, holding on to it like it was a lifeline and I was drowning. The Faeriewalker Series:1. Glimmerglass2. I absolutely loved Glimmerglass, so when Shadowspell showed up on my doorstep I was so giddy! I liked the cover of the first book, but love the cover of this one. It is even prettier in person and I love the glow around the stag.Enough about the cover though, onto the book itself. We pick up right where we left off with Dana. She has been moved to a pretty secure location underground, which is making her become a little stir crazy. Who wouldn't be though? Stuck underground all day with no windows and no visitors except bodyguards and you parents? I know I would go crazy! She is still getting her self defense lessons from Keane, who I have still not figured out all the way yet. I do like having his sarcastic remarks to cut the tension at times. For all his broodiness, the guy is funny. I know there is still more to meet the eye with this one and I can only hope we get to see more of him in upcoming books.Speaking of the boys in Dana's life, for all of his faults, I still really like Ethan. I know, but I still think he really is good deep down and cares for Dana. I think if I were in her situation I would be having some of the same inner dialogue debates that she does. Ethan has a way of getting under your skin and staying there no matter how many times you try and kick him out. I am nervous for what kind of future the two of them can have together, but whatever it is I am rooting for Ethan.Onto the last questionable guy in Dana's life, The Erlking. I am not really sure what to make of him. I know he is supposed to be the ultimate bad guy, but I am really having a hard time seeing him that way. All evidence points to him being corrupt, but I am going to hold out hope that there is something there with him that we are not seeing. Or maybe I am just a sucker for the bad guy who knows, only the future books in the series will be able to tell about that one. I am also wondering if the source of his demise was hinted at in this book. If that is how this should end, no one can be sure of that except Jenna at this point and I am sure she is not telling. All interesting ideas and theories for me to play around with, but I will have to wait for future books to see how it ultimately plays out.Dana has quite a few guys running around in her life doesn't she? There are many moments where she lets them a little closer than I thought she would, but I am not complaining. Those Fae boys are a little hard to resist, so I can't blame Dana for having a little fun while she can.Shadowspell focuses on the relationships in Dana's life, not just the guys, but with her friends and family as well. The action did take a little bit of a back seat because of this, but it felt important to build those characters persona's and establish relationships between the characters.Overall, this book is a fantastic second installment to this intriguing series. I have loved watching Dana try and navigate her way though this strange world. That is one of the aspects I adore most about this series, Dana is seeing the world of Faerie through new eyes and therefore the reader is as well. It gives the story a unique perspective and keeps you guessing what is going to happen next right alongside Dana. Shadowspell has answered some of my questions, but opened a whole can of new ones. Therefore I am eagerly awaiting the next book, Sirensong, which comes out July 5th, 2011.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban FantasySHADOWSPELL is YA on the cusp of adulthood. The plotting is more like what you’d expect in urban fantasy, the characters deal with issues more pressing then finding a date to prom (not that that can’t be fun), and the romance significantly pushes the limit for what we usually find with YA.I said the romance is steamy, and boy is it. In addition to the two romantic interests introduced in GLIMMERGLASS (a bad boy Unseelie fae whose intentions are less then honorable & an angry Seelie fae anarchist who masters in mixed signals), SHADOWSPELL throws yet another criminally hot fey in to the mix: the leader of the Wild Hunt, the Erlking. The Erlking is bad. Hunt you down, impale-you-with-his-sword-and-dance-around-your-corpse bad. Well maybe. I woudn’t be surprise if he played poker with kittens. He’s the bad guy who makes no excuses for who he is. He’s got this cocky, I’m-evil-so-what attitude that I always seem to fall for. Like Dana, I know he’s trouble, but also like Dana, I can’t deny that there’s something about him that doesn’t completely add up. He may not be the complete scoundrel that everyone claims he is (the verdict is still out). I did have to get over my squeamishness regarding how old he is since he’s pursuing this teenage girl (whatever the reasons). I know Fae don’t age so everyone looks young, but still, it was uncomfortable at times.Once again I’m impressed by Dana. She keeps her head in situations where people twice her age wouldn’t have been half as smart. That’s not to say she doesn’t still act like a teenager, but she doesn’t give her hormones full control of her body either (even when she really really wants too). She displays a maturity that I have been craving in YA lately. Overall, the Faeriewalker books have become one of my favorite YA faerie series largely because they reminds me a little of a YA version of Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series. Seriously. Lots of hot Fae guys who all have ulterior motives where Dana is concerned and whose entire life gets flipped upside down when she discovers her unique abilities. The next Faeriewalker book is called SIRENSONG and will be published on July 5, 2011. It’s going up on my Can’t Wait For list immediately.Sexual Content: Kissing. References to sex. Attempted rape. Scenes of semi graphic sensuality.
