Marsilio Ficino wird 1433 in der Toskana als Sohn des Leibarztes von Cosimo de Medici geboren, der lebenslang sein Gönner und Förderer bleibt. Nach dem Studium der Philosophie und Medizin in Pisa und Florenz beginnt er das Studium des Griechischen und übersetzt neben platonischen Texten auch einige neuplatonische.Um 1469 entsteht Über die Liebe oder Platons Gastmahl, in dem gelehrte Florentiner während eines Gastmahls am Leitfaden von Platons Symposion sieben Reden über die Liebe im platonischen Sinne halten. Den Gegenstand dieser Erörterungen in literarischer Form bilden unterschiedliche Bereiche der Liebe: die Herkunft des Eros, die Empfindungen der Liebenden, die Formen und Erscheinungen der Schönheit, die Art und Weise des Verliebens und viele andere. Ficinos movens dabei ist die Ausarbeitung einer „philosophischen Religion“, die in der Versöhnung platonischen Denkens mit der Christentum ihre Aufgabe sieht, da letztlich die platonische Liebe eine Liebe zu Gott sei. Dem Werk ist bis in 17. Jahrhundert hinein große Aufmerksamkeit zuteil geworden.Die platonische Theologie über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele wird 1474 vollendet, und ist der weiteren Ausführung der „philosophischen Religion“ gewidmet. Die Wirkung des Werks auf die Renaissancephilosophie war erheblich und bestimmt die Rezeption des Neu-Platonismus bis hin zu Hegel.Ficino stirbt 1499 in Florenz.
