    Chapter I: The Playground Rumble

Rise and shine friends! It’s 6:30 in the morning! Wake up, McComb! Let’s roll out of bed, sleepyheads! This is your unseen DJ Magic from K92.8, KIX FM radio station getting you hyped to start your day off just right, ok? If you needed to be there at 6:00 then you may want to start looking for another job because you’re already 30 minutes late! If you need to be there by 7:00 a.m., then you have exactly 29 minutes to punch that clock. It’s 6:31…6:31 on what looks like it’s gonna be a magnificent Monday. Up next is your local traffic and weather, but first, let’s all listen to a new groove made by some young musicians out of Atlanta, Georgia.- The Crunk Bunch! They call their newest jam Don’t Hurt ‘Em!

DJ Magic continued talking while Edward Martin, or Character Ed as some called him, sat on the side of his bed stretching and yawning. He’d spent most of the prior evening at MLK Park playing football with friends. Ed turned off the radio when he got up to go to the bathroom. He moved at a snail’s pace as he stumbled down the hall.

After a long hot shower, Ed got dressed, ate breakfast and headed out the front door to school. On the way, he ran into his good friend Maurice, better known as Mo. They laughed and talked about last night’s episode of everyone’s favorite TV show ‘Somebody’s Gonna Be a Trillionaire.’ The morning started off just great until the boys topped the hill in front of the school. They noticed some gang members over in the far corner of the parking lot pushing around a student that neither of them had ever seen before. The gangsters had the big guy surrounded. One of them rushed in to hit him but got picked up by his shirt and thrown aside like an old pair of shoes. The gang leader, Turk, was known for robbing new students at U.M.S. for their money, jewelry, cell phones, mp3 players or whatever else he could find. Lots of kids say he was so mean because his mother gave him up for adoption at birth and he was bounced around from one foster home to the next. Ed and Mo watched the action from across the parking lot.

I see that Turk and those S.U.G. thugs are bullying again, Ed said. I hope they leave him alone before someone snitches on them to the assistant principal!

No help needed from the assistant principal, man! It looks like that new guy is handling the Straight Up Gangsters all by himself! Mo remarked. Hey, dude! Look! Look! He’s lifting Turk up high over his head!

Oh, man! This guy’s as strong as an ox! Ed yelled. He slammed him down on the hard concrete!

Check that out. The rest of Turk’s ‘friends’ ran inside of the building! They left their leader out on the parking lot during a beat down? Wow! Mo said in disbelief. So much for all of that love these gang members claim to have for each other, huh?

That’s why I’ll never join a gang! It’s all so dumb to me! Ed said.

After fighting off the gangsters, the new guy picked up his books and made his way into the side door of the school. He went to the gym and sat alone on the bleachers. Turk got up off the ground, fixed his clothes, and limped in the side door too. His elbow was bruised and bloody from the concrete. He knew that others had seen him get slammed onto the pavement. Ashamed of his loss, he tended his bruised elbow in the 8th grade boys’ bathroom until it was time for classes to begin. Ed and Mo entered into the school through the front door.

Mo! Do you think we need to stop in the office to tell an adult about the bullying we just witnessed? Ed asked.

Nah, I don’t think those thugs will mess with that big guy anymore! Mo replied. I hope they just learned a real good lesson about picking on people! I’m going to my locker. I’ll catch you later!

Cool, Ed! I’ll get with you when we go to P.E.!

Both boys split up when they got past the office. Ed went to the bathroom and his locker before reporting to homeroom. Maurice rushed to the cafeteria for breakfast.

School began minutes later. Ed raised his hand to answer several questions during his first class, Spanish. He enjoyed learning about other countries. Next, his Language Arts and World History classes sailed by smoothly, but, by 11:00, he anxiously awaited P.E. class. The excitement about hanging out and talking with his crew was evident in the way he impatiently tapped his fingers on the desk. Finally, it was 11:15 a.m. The school bell rang as loud as a roaring lion whose voice could be heard throughout the jungle. Students poured out of their classes like water from a noisy waterfall.

Yeah buddy, 3rd period is finally over! one student shouted. Normal conversations echoed in the halls as students made their way to their next class. Most times the conversations focused on which rapper or singer on the radio had the best skills or how good the football and basketball players would be next year. Five eighth grade girls talked about clothes and the latest sneakers that everyone just had to have as soon as they could convince their parents to buy them.

Girl, I love those smooth, high top Sykix basketball sneakers that are on sale at Hooper’s shoe store downtown! I already told my mama that I just have to have ‘em next week, Sharon said.

I know that’s real! I like the pink ones with the multi-colored strings that light up when your feet leave the ground. They’ll go good with that outfit my dad gave me, one of her sidekicks, Darcy replied. Murl, Brittany, and Hadasah nodded in agreement.

Five members of the football team bobbed their heads as they listened to music with headphones glued to their ears. Students had telephones and mp3 players tucked in their pockets as they listened to a downloaded song or the radio station, K 92.8 KIX FM. Everyone seemed cool or hip on that day, except for one guy who stood alone by the trophy cases in the main hallway. He looked lost.

Ed exited the science lab with another good pal Enrique Salazar, better known as Rico. Both boys instantly zoomed in on the new guy that seemed out of place.

Rico, that’s the guy me and Mo saw body slam Turk in the parking lot this morning! Ed said.

Oh yeah? So that’s him, huh? I heard that Turk got a taste of his own medicine early this morning! Rico whispered.

This guy looked very mean. He was huge too so everyone softly tipped around him. However, Ed and Rico headed straight for him to introduce themselves but he vanished up the steps into a gigantic wave of students headed to the gym. It was now 11:17 a.m., time for the 8th graders to get some exercise. Once Ed and Rico entered the gym, they ran into their good friend Mo.

Ahh yes, I love P.E.! It’s the best time to relieve some of this stress! Mo chanted.

No doubt about that! Rico added. I really like hanging out with my homies in P.E. Hey Mo! Let’s go ask Coach York for a football to take outside with us today!

Rico and Mo shouted while running across the noisy gym. Ok, we’ll be right back after we go talk to Coach York!

Yeah, you guys go handle that, and I’ll wait here by the door for Neat and Tank, Ed said.

He leaned against the wall and chilled for a bit. Ed brushed his shoulders off and tightened his belt to hold his pants up. A big, bright smile showed his gapped front teeth. The other students smiled back at him. He was quite popular. Ed was also a good student. He never brought home anything less than a C on his report card. Ed was known as a ‘good guy’ who hardly ever got into any trouble. All of the girls thought he was pretty cool too, not to mention cute: his curly black hair always caught their eyes. He waved at a flock of them as they passed into the gym. The girls all paused.

    Hey Ed, they said.

Ed gave them a bashful look then replied, Good morning ladies!

Just then Neat and Tank came into the gym from Mrs. Brown’s Algebra class when Ed spotted them.

    Yo Neat! Tank! What’s up?

Not much Ed. Except, I think I just bombed on a quiz? Tank said. Believe me! he warned them with a stern look on his face. When I tell you Mrs. Brown’s Algebra pop quiz is nothing nice, I mean just that, homeboy! It’s nothing nice at all!

Oh no, buddy! You bombed out too? Neat replied.

Yeah, me too, Tank began to whisper as he looked over his shoulders. I don’t know about you, but I was way too distracted in class. I couldn’t get my mind off of what we saw on the way to school this morning.

What did you see that was so bad it made you bomb on a math quiz? Ed asked. You’re usually the best at math.

Do you want me to tell him what we saw, Tank? Neat interrupted.

No Neat, I’ll tell him about it. Check this out right here! Tank waved for the group to huddle closer together before he told them what went down.

This morning while we were walking to school, we saw this new guy that neither of us had ever seen before. He was getting picked on by Lil’ Jimmy Bonds and his crew of roughnecks! he reported.

Roughnecks? Are you kidding me, Tank? Ed replied with a smirk. They’re no rougher than the thug gangster, Turk, who got bounced off the concrete when Mo and I came into the school!

Well they seemed really rough to me; they pushed this new guy and talked about him pretty bad. He just kept asking them nicely to leave him alone. The more he asked them to stop, the more they kept on with the pushing, teasing, and making threats. This guy was strong, too. He could’ve easily grabbed one of those guys and thrown him all the way across the street! Tank explained.

There’s a name for the S.U.G. thugs plus Jimmy and his friends too- bullies. You saw the new guy getting bullied, Ed remarked. Jimmy and his friends aren’t roughnecks, just bullies, plain and simple.

Well, if that’s what they are, then something can probably be done about them at the school, right? Juanita added. Suddenly, the two future Olympic track stars, Rico and Mo, ran back across the gym floor with the good news.

Coach gave us the football, so we can go outside today!

The two boys could hardly talk while trying to catch their breath. Ed and all of his friends brimmed with excitement about going outside for P.E. While the others talked over their plans for the playground, Ed’s eyes skimmed over the crowded gym floor. First, his eyes glanced over to the bleachers, and then back to the gym floor. From the corner of his left eye, he saw the stranger by the trophy case. Ed tried to keep track of him but, once again, the new guy blended into the crowd as all the 8th grade students migrated outside.

The cool spring breeze carried the smell of the honeysuckle vines that were perched on the backside of the fence surrounding the playground. Some boys ran away as girls gave chase. Across the way, a few other guys threw the football with Rico and Mo. Near the school gate, a group of girls practiced the hip hop dance routines that they had created the day prior at MLK Park. Other students simply laughed and talked and hung out around the tall, silver fence. Yes, it seemed like a perfect day for P.E. at U.M.S. until Ed looked over by the giant Oak tree and noticed a crowd gathering that could only mean one thing- trouble. In the distance, he saw Lil’ Jimmy Bonds and his crew walking up to the new guy he’d seen in the halls.

Jimmy had been a bully since elementary school. Back then he lashed out violently because other kids teased him about his tiny size. During middle school, he’d become known as a real warlord who’d rumble with the biggest of opponents.

One by one, all of the students joined the walk to the big Oak tree. With a crowd of followers on their heels, Lil’ Jimmy and his roughnecks quickly approached the new guy, the same guy Neat and Tank saw earlier that morning, the same student Ed had already seen three times. Tom, the new guy, spoke in a calm and confident voice during the staring contest between him and Lil’ Jimmy.

Hey dudes, I don’t need any more trouble here. Why do you guys keep bothering me?

Jimmy spoke as loud as he could for all to hear. Because we can, punk!

Ed and his pals watched and listened from the back of the thick crowd of students.

Neat leaned over to the guys and whispered, Mo, that’s the guy we saw getting bullied by Jimmy and his crew this morning on the way to school!

Oh yeah! That’s the same dude me and Ed saw body slam Turk this morning in the parking lot! Mo exclaimed. It’s very, very clear that this is gonna be a good fight right here!

The students from within the crowd began to shout, Hey, new dude! Jimmy and his crew are always bullying somebody out here on the playground!

Show ‘em what you got for ‘em this time, one girl taunted.

Yeah, big man! Handle ‘em the same way you did Turk and those S.U.G. earlier!

Another student yelled, "Yeah, you’ve got the muscle! Make them pay this time!"

Jimmy’s pal, Bome, grabbed Tom by his shirt and pushed him as Clyde attacked Tom verbally trying to keep him in check.

What’s up, fat boy! Why you lookin’ so weak? Still scared from this morning, huh? Say something and I’ll knock you down in front of everybody out here! Clyde threatened.

Then Bome and Clyde grabbed Tom Jones by each of his arms while Jimmy grabbed him by his shirt collar with one hand. He placed a tight fist in Tom’s face with the other hand. Ed and his pals made their way through the crowd. Jimmy drew back to punch Tom’s lights out when Ed finally got through.

Hey Jimmy! What’s up with you? Ed yelled. That’s not fair at all. Why are you picking on this guy? He just got here. Leave him alone!

Jimmy gave Ed a look that could melt steel. What do you have to do with it, Character Ed? he snarled. Don’t you have some kind of ‘good deed’ to do for one of the teachers or something? I mean shouldn’t you go sweep up the science lab or clean the dry erase board for extra points? His crew members laughed together.

No! Not today Jimmy! And for the record, I have nothing to do with it except I’m trying to help this guy who has done you no wrong, Ed explained. I’m trying to help you and your crew too. Just for the record, he can rumble too, ok? I saw him in action this morning. He’s no joke. Leave him alone! Ed insisted.

Out of nowhere, Tom Jones balked. Let me go dudes, I’m sick of this!

He flung them off of him with one hard swing of his huge arms. All three bullies flew into the crowd. Tom raised his fists up to guard his face. Lil’ Jimmy raised up from the crowd and prepared for battle. Bome and Clyde stood behind him to help him once the fight began. Jimmy rushed in at Tom’s face with a wild punch. However, the punch was quickly blocked by Tom’s big wide hands. He threw Jimmy back in to the large crowd as he spoke.

Look guys, I know what you want to do here! You guys want me to feel fear; not just me, all of us. You want us to be afraid so you can push us around. There is no need for all of that! Big Tom’s strength amazed everyone especially Tank and Rico who watched with their mouths opened wide enough to stick footballs inside.

Coach York and his assistant came over to make sure everything was ok.

Everythang’s cool, Coach, one student told him. By then, the intimidators had been taken down a notch or two. They’d never had someone stand up to them, especially in front of a large crowd of their peers.

As Tom continued to talk, Ed and his friends moved in even closer to listen. You see man, back at my old school in Kentucky, I wasn’t just a bully. I used to be THE bully boss! I was the king bully at my school. All the other so called bullies had to check with me first before they shook anyone down for their money or served a beat down. I made my name as an intimidator a long time ago. I always picked on students different than me. It didn’t matter if they were short, fat, skinny or if they talked funny. Ed stared at the ground disgusted as Tom continued. "I
