Introduction
Questions. Life is full of them, and you’ve probably got a lot of your own.
1 Some are frivolous: If you stick a bean up your nose, will it grow roots into your brain?
1 Some are practical: Should you keep buying VHS tapes, or will DVD soon make them all obsolete?
1 And, some are a bit fanciful: How do you decide between your competing career ambitions of professional soccer player, Internet business tycoon, and pop music star?
For most of the questions that you have, the answers turn out to be pretty insignificant (except bean roots in your brain could be somewhat painful). Your worries about VHS will be forgotten when your new DVD collection becomes outdated. And you’ll have a little different perspective on career goals when you discover that your parents— when they were your age—hoped to be astronauts or professional disco dancers (and you probably want to avoid that last mental picture).
We’ll admit that we don’t know you very well (after all, we’ve only been acquainted with you for about 179 words or so), but we suspect that you have a few other questions—questions that are much more than just frivolous, practical, or fanciful.
If you’re intelligent (and we suspect that you are because, hey, you’re reading this book), you probably have a few philosophical questions. Like questions about whether the Bible makes sense. Oh sure, you’ve heard the Sunday school lessons about God creating the world in six days, but you’re probably curious about a lot of stuff that isn’t mentioned in the creation story. You’re probably wondering:
1 Why aren’t dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? (After all, they’re the stars in a few blockbuster movies, so why isn’t there a single verse about them in the Bible?)
1 What about the cavemen? Is that what Adam really looked like, all hairy and slouched over? (And does that mean Eve was really hairy, too?) If the cavemen were some form of sub-humans, why doesn’t the Bible talk about them?
1 And, is there life on other planets? Did God only create us humans, or is there intelligent life somewhere else in outer space? Does the Bible give any clues about space aliens?
God_said_Bang_final_0006_001See, we told you there are lots of questions. But there’s more. What about:
1 Does science agree or disagree with the Bible? Why do some Bible teachers say the world is 10,000 years old but most scientists say the earth is about 10 billion years old? Who is right? Who is wrong?
1 What should you do in science class if the teacher starts talking about how the world began? Do you start reciting Genesis 1:1 (In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth
), or do you just keep your mouth shut? What if someone says that humans evolved
from the monkeys?
Doesn’t it boil down to this one simple question:
Is the Bible’s explanation of creation believable?
Now, you might not want to ask that question in church (because you’re afraid the pastor would hit you on the head with a hymnal), but it is an honest question. God won’t get mad if you ask it. In fact, we think He wants you to ask questions like that.
We’re writing this book to help you go behind the scenes
of the creation story. Sort of, Creation: Up Close and Personal.
We’ll be covering some awesome stuff:
1 Outer space! (planets and solar systems and asteroids and meteors)
1 The earth! (volcanoes and earthquakes and floods)
1 Where humans came from! (Don’t confuse this with the Where do babies come from?
question. We won’t be talking about the mechanics of human reproduction.
In this book, we’re looking at how humans got on the earth. If you have questions about human sexuality, you’ll have to look in another book. Or, you can ask your parents about it—but be prepared for them to act kind of nervous and weird.)
We’re going to be talking about some serious stuff, but we promise you that it won’t get boring. (We hate to write dull stuff as much as you hate to read it.) So, nothing boring; just the really cool facts. They might seem unbelievable at first, but when you put them all together, it’s totally believable!
Oh, by the way, we are biased. (Most authors won’t admit that. They all want to seem objective, but all writers work from their own viewpoints, and their opinions influence them. But we’ve had this growing friendship with you—up to about 771 words now—so we want to be completely honest with you.) Here is our bias:
We believe the Bible is absolutely and entirely true.
That means we’ll be going to the Bible as our #1 source of information about the creation of the world and the human race.
God_said_Bang_final_0008_001Now, we aren’t two brain-dead, nonthinking Christian morons who believe the Bible just because some screaming preacher in a white polyester suit on cable TV told us to. We believe the Bible because we put it to the test and found it to be true. We’ll take the same approach with you. We’ll tell you what the Bible says, we’ll compare it to history and to modern science, and we’ll let you decide for yourself. (You won’t hear any screaming preaching from us. And the only white polyester suit you’ll find is in your dad’s closet with his old disco clothes.)
We’ve got one final confession to make: We are going to be telling you a lot about the Bible and a lot about science. But we didn’t get all of this information from our own minds. We aren’t that smart because our brain capacity is rather limited. (Hey, we had to learn the answer to the bean in the nostril
question the hard way.) But we have done a lot of research to learn what other people—with larger brains—have discovered. We have talked to a lot of scientists and religious folks, and we have read the books by the ones we didn’t get a chance to talk to. (We’re sure they wanted to talk to us, but they must have been too busy in their laboratories and their pulpits.) We digested a lot of information, and we have regurgitated it in this book. We won’t be asking you to believe what we say; we’re just giving you the information so you can decide for yourself.
Now, before you begin reading Chapter 1, we just want to make this one last point:
