About this ebook

The first book in a hilarious chapter book series about an accidental rule breaker from Katherine Applegate, Newbery Medal–winning and bestselling author of The One and Only Ivan, Endling, and Wishtree.

When his classmates can’t sit still for a big performance at school, Roscoe Riley takes matters into his own hands with a liberal dose of Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue—which his mom calls the don’t-you-dare glue because Roscoe isn’t supposed to use it.

Roscoe doesn’t mean to break the rules—he just can’t help himself! After all, his teacher’s job might be at stake and desperate times call for desperate measures.

Roscoe and his comical misadventures will appeal to fans of Megan McDonald’s Stink series; Nancy Krulik’s George Brown, Class Clown series; Rebecca Elliott’s Owl Diaries series; and Dan Gutman’s My Weirder School series.

Roscoe Riley is your average first grader: he has trouble remembering all the rules and is always getting in trouble but he loves to help out his parents and teacher. That’s why he thought it would be okay to take the Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue (that his mom calls the don’t-you-dare glue!) to school and use it to save his teacher from losing her job. The plot is wonderfully silly, and even adult readers will find themselves chuckling at Roscoe’s musings. However, in an effort to make the story sound like Roscoe is speaking to the reader, the text is fraught with sentence fragments. If you can handle that, this is a great transitional chapter book that will make kids excited to read. The main character is fun loving and good-natured and the chapters are short enough to keep young readers’ momentum going. Every few pages there is a black and white cartoon illustration that aids in comprehension because the pictures depict complicated parts in the text (like when Roscoe is explaining antennae headbands he and his classmates wear). After reading this book readers will be eager to read more of the series and see what other ridiculous adventures Roscoe gets himself into!

Roscoe Riley doesn't mean to get into trouble, but somehow it just happens. Told from his position in the time-out corner, this first installment explains why Roscoe glued his friends to chairs (it was for the good of the whole class!). Funny and lighthearted, this would be a great choice for new chapter book readers who enjoy Junie B. Jones, Clementine, and others like that.

Series of stories which should interest any young reader, especially boys. Roscoe and trouble are twins. He is a likable character and means well even though he oftens finds himself in troublesome situations. Roscoe's tales are amusing and true to life. I think that boys who may not be that interested in reading might find these books amusing and want to try some other books (hopefully).

My six year old laughed. But then he got bored. At the end, he enjoyed it again. He is difficult to entertain. We might read other roscoe Riley books

Welcome to Time-Out

Hey! Over here!

It’s me. Roscoe.

Welcome to the Official Roscoe Riley Time-out Corner.

Want to hang out with me?

I have to warn you, though. We’re going to be here for a while.

See, I kinda got in some trouble today.

Again.

Kids have to follow so many rules!

Sometimes my brain forgets to remember them all.

It’s not like I try to find ways to get in trouble. It’s just that trouble has a way of finding me.

Truth is, I’m just a normal, everyday kid like you.

My favorite food is blue M&M’s. My favorite sport is bed jumping. My favorite color is rainbow.

And my most not-favorite thing is lima beans.

See? Like I said. Just a normal, everyday kid.

A normal, everyday kid who sometimes gets into trouble.

Like today. I was just trying to help out my teacher.

How was I supposed to know you shouldn’t glue people to chairs?

With Super-Mega-Gonzo Glue?

You’ve done that, haven’t you?

Oh.

Never?

Oh.

Well, maybe you should hear the whole story. . . .
