About this ebook

What good is a designer dress if someone puts a stake through it?

It's the most important event of the season in New York's upper-crust vampire society. The Rauhnacht Grand Ball has everything you need for a night of scandal and intrigue: gala dresses, stolen boyfriends, forbidden love . . .

Then a team of vampire hunters shows up and ruins everything! The surprise attack by Van Helsings is the worst gate-crashing ever.

In the aftermath, half sisters Lilith and Cally scramble to regain their footing at the exclusive Bathory Academy—and in the world of high fashion, where both have star potential. When new suitors turn the romance up a notch, it's almost enough to make the half sisters forget their intense rivalry. Almost. But shared blood between vampires is not easy, and before long Lilith and Cally find themselves face-to-face again.

This book was just missing something. I kept reading hoping at some point I would connect with the characters or just maybe some big event would take place and make me feel... Well something. The book then just ends with one BiG revelation that you should have already put together and figured out. I am not sure if I will check out the next book or not.

Rate: 3.5I had this is my book shelf since last year. Thank goodness I finally came around reading it. I know. I know the cover looks like more of a glamor shop and therefore the contents is probably all whack. There I go again with judging the cover. Vamps is nothing like that sure there's still high end New York fashion and high maintenance princess type characters, shallow big egos and selfish. Lilith, Jules, Carmen, Sergei, Tanith, Melinda, and Oliver are among those vampire family they call Old Blood. They are considered the ruling class of their society. The most powerful and wealthiest of all of them. As usual they are young, rich and fabulous. Lilith is you typical Mean Girl leader. Behind her bravado is an insecure teenage girl, so she look down on most of her peers and bully them into fearing her. After a situation at their usual party spot, the Belfry, Lilith and company was temporary ban until the problem get sorted out. Bored and looking for adventure they decided to go slumming at the nearby Greenwich Village to snack on some drug dealers or prostitute. But they weren't the only ones who have the same idea, a New Blood, (meaning a vampire that is a member of a family that was stripped of bloodrights during battle) or they assumed she was a New Blood from her fashion stand point. Her name is Cally a spirited and talented halfling. She is what they called the Stormgatherer with vampire blood. Their cat fight was interrupted when the Van Helsings showed up killing almost killing them. The casualty lost one One Blood teenager, Lilith best friend and from then on a rivalry between Cally and Lilith was born.I told my friend. hey this book has our favorite vampire hunter. And she's like..."Buffy?", I wanted to smack her I do but I cannot blame her, I don't remember the last book I read featuring them. We dearly love Buffy we do, but we agreed that the best vampire hunter written in fiction are the Van Helsings. So I am glad that they exist in this book If I haven't read a lot of vampire books, I would have put this book down. There was a scene where Lilith was in tears about daddy cutting up his credit card than her best friend dying. Ridiculous right? But I am used to their snotty behavior now and this kind of behavior is not too shocking anymore. There's a cliche attraction between Cally and Peter Van Helsing but I am intrigued nonetheless. I'd love to share more of the plot but that will be giving away the whole story, so I'll shut up now. Conclusion: I like where the story is going and I am definitely interested on finding out what's going to happen next.

This review is coming from someone who did NOT read the previous volumes in the series:I picked this book up on a whim when several of my friends were reading, or wanting to read, the series. I wanted to know what it was all about, and this was the first one I found, so I figured I'd give it a try.First of all, I had no problem figuring out what was going on. I may not know every detail, but I had no trouble following the story. So, don't think you absolutely have to start with the first book in order to read anything from this series. The book does a great job of repeating all the important details you need to know.I found most of the characters to be every bit the stuck-up, entitled, self-absorbed, and shallow brats that the book description basically promised they'd be. The whole concept of vampire teenagers with the same extreme attitude issues as stereotypical rich human teenagers is simultaneously genius and hilarious. I particularly enjoyed the comeback Lilith was able to make to her father: "When YOU were MY age, Beethoven was rocking the charts." So, even if I was skeptical at first, I can honestly say that this was a fun book to read. I may even go on the wishlist for the previous ones so I can read them. And as for the next one? Well, I must admit, I AM curious about what happens.

Lilith Todd is the queen of Barthory Academy, the school for only the richest Old-Blood vampire girls. Enter, Cally, who no one is really sure about. How did she get into the school. Where does her magic come from? One thing is for sure, Lilith does not want her around, and what Lilith wants, she usually gets. I was all set not the like the book. All the designer name dropping is expected in chick lit but I was beginning to think that everyone in the book was going to be some sort of monster. Well, that is not the case and I ended up sort of enjoying it. I will definitely read the next one. I will say that this is for older teens. It contains drug, alcohol and sex references. It is also pretty violent in some places.

First of all, this book is being marketed to teens and tweens, and in my opinion it is not appropriate. Perhaps I'm a prude...ok, that's fine. But, I think books with teenagers (albeit teen vampires) having sex in public restrooms, being hungover from the drugged blood they ingested the night before, and hanging out in bars drinking blood laced with alcohol is going too far. I'm not sure when this became ok for teen literature, but it bothers me.That said, once I got through the first third of the book, I was better able to appreciate the story. The writing is pretty good - not extraordinary, but solid. At times the plot feels rushed - that could just be a genre thing, though. If you can look past the inappropriate bits, the books isn't that bad. It is important to note that this is obviously the first in a series, because there's really no closure in the end. And perhaps a sign that it was a pretty good story is that I was a bit ticked that it ended when it did. It left me wanting more. Although, I don't think I'll actually seek out the second installment. Teenage girls will probably really enjoy the book. And perhaps the sex and drug references are commonplace in young adult literature now. It just didn't suit me.
