About this audiobook

Maud is an irascible eighty-eight-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and . . . no qualms about a little murder. This funny, irreverent story collection by Helene Tursten, author of the Irene Huss Investigation series, features two-never-before translated stories that will keep you laughing all the way to the retirement home.

Ever since her darling father's untimely death when she was only eighteen, Maud has lived in the family's spacious apartment in downtown Gothenburg rent-free, thanks to a minor clause in a hastily negotiated contract. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late eighties, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way.

Over the course of her adventures-or misadventures-this little bold lady will handle a crisis with a local celebrity who has her eyes on Maud's apartment, foil the engagement of her long-ago lover, and dispose of some pesky neighbors. But when the local authorities are called to investigate a dead body found in Maud's apartment, will Maud finally become a suspect?

Only 4 stories and 2 are the same one, just from a different point of view. But it was a fun read. I enjoyed the glimpse into the Swedish way of life. I certainly wouldn’t want to cross Maud.

The stories were quite good, but the narrator was not great. She "over-acted" way too much!

This is not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting a mischievous elderly lady. She was a bit more than that.

An elderly lady is up to no good by Helene Tursten
    (Scribd audiobook)
This book originally I believe written in Swedish is what you should place in the hands of anyone who assumes that are all elderly ladies are sweet unassuming women who would definitely never do anything bad like let’s say for instance murder. Granted Maud never seems to hurt someone who didn’t deserve it but she definitely proves even little old ladies can take care of issues themselves. This is a short read but definitely a good one.

A collection of five short stories about an intriguing old lady named Maude. She has lived in her large apartment all her life, and does so rent free, thanks to a contractual agreement made when her father passed away. Each story is a small glimpse into Maude's world. One would not think such a slight old woman who has all she could want would be in need to murder. But as each story shows, one does what one must to protect what they love and care for. This was such a good and quick read. I found myself getting lost in Maude’s world and at times feeling as though perhaps she was a bit justified in her actions. Filled with dark humor and unique plots I highly recommend this to any fan of murder and mystery. Reading Prompt: A Translated book written by and/or translated by a woman

Wickedly clever, dark humor! Elderly people make the best characters!

Great story telling. Nothing like I’ve ever read before. Excellent narrator! Only issue I had was the skipping around in placing the stories in the book. Going back and forth from past to present and reverse. It was little confusing when stuff that happened already goes back to before it.

    Charming "Elderly Lady" story!
    Could be Miss Marples cousin.
I was so in to this read, I was surprised when it was over. I plan on reading more Helene Tursten books!
    Making a list now.
I can only hope my mind is as clear as this Elderly Lady in the years to come.

I gave it a 4 only because in my humble opinion, the narrator could of done a better job!

I picked this up at the library because I liked the cover: a physically little book with the titled cross-stitched on the cover, like an old fashioned sampler. In spite of the skulls and crossbones also on the cover, I was expecting humorous tales of an elderly Swedish woman. Only to find out she is a serial killer when she feels her way of life threatened. It is funny in its own way and I found myself liking her a lot and didn't fault her for her crimes. Recommend.

A surprisingly spry 88 year old woman with a penchant for murder... The quirky dark humor was good and kept the short stories lights enough to enjoy.

I did not enjoy this book. Helene Tursten, who writes the Detective Inspector Huss series of Swedish crime novels, here turns her hand to writing about Maud, a little old lady with very little conscience and a penchant for murder. Delightful as this sounds, the short stories in the small volume were, to me, written in a fashion that I found unbelievable. I could not get into the old-lady-as-murderer vibe. Many of the things that Maud does are beyond belief for a woman whom I gathered was an octogenarian. Not a great start to the reading year.

Charming. It's light revenge porn, if you will, made amusing by the heroine/villain, who is a little old murder lady. She just wants to live peacefully in her apartment and the world keeps intruding.

I selected this book for the title alone. It’s a very small book with five linked short stories … just 171 small pages with big type and an unlikely octogenarian heroine, Maud. Dark but funny. No spoilers here.Being an old lady myself, I "get" this book.

If you want some laughs, check it out! It's narrator is really good and voices for the different characters are distinct to not get confused.

You gotta love Maud, mostly because you don’t want to get on her bad side. The “no good” that Maud is up to is murder. The first murders are justified, at least, there is a reason in Maud’s mind that she needs to murder. And then it gets easier. And by the last story, it almost seems contrived, like she wanted murder to happen. And as much as I normally don’t like stories in which the protagonist is a criminal, somehow, in this novel, Maud is likable. I’m not quite sure how the author managed that, but she did it with admirable style. It’s a well-written novel, with intricate murder mysteries and an elderly (and likable!) murderer!

An Elderly Lady Must Not Be Crossed (2020) (Elderly Lady #2) by Helene Tursten. Little Maud is back in this continuation of the first Maud book, An Elderly Lady Is Up To No Good. This time there is a grand tour set for South Africa and there Maud finds problems also confronting her. While she doesn’t actually want to kill anyone, heaven knows, life just makes things difficult sometimes. The stories in this installment of the series finds more of little Maud’s solutions for everyday problems. The stories are nicely written, and while the last entry is about 100 pages, it is worth the little extra effort. Do read this book only after having read the first collection as you will have a few questions answered for you and both books are morbidly fun in their own fashion.

Collection of short stories featuring an octogenerian spinster who does not suffer fools gladly and takes direct (and irreversible) action to deal with them.
