About this audiobook

A stunning fantasy inspired by familiar fairytales, complete with cursed princesses, thieves-turned-soldiers, and an orphan girl transformed into an immortal, shapeshifting heroine. The Nissera Chronicles start here . . .

Welcome to Nissera, land of three kingdoms and home to spectacular magic.

Bristal, a sixteen-year-old kitchen maid, finds herself in a gritty fairy tale gone wrong when she discovers she has elicromancer magic in her blood. Elicromancers are an ancient breed of immortal people, but only two remain in Nissera after a bloody civil war. Bristal joins their ranks without knowing that one of them has a dark secret . . . Tamarice is plotting a quest to overthrow the realm's nobility and take charge herself. Together, Bristal and Brack must guard the three kingdoms of Nissera against Tamarice's black elicromancy. There are princesses to protect, royal alliances to forge, and fierce monsters to battle-all with the hope of preserving peace.

Compelling story, characters I could easily see in my mind and develop Opinions about. Only had a few beefs: for all that Nat was such a "natural" with the revolvers, why did she *always* seem to miss or just wing the Woodwalker she was aiming at? How did she manage to have all the needed spells memorized right from the get-go? (Hand-wave: because of the Oath, I guess.) And how did she lose interest in studying history when so much of the book's climax was due to reconnecting on a powerful level with history? Where the hell did the sudden desire to work with animals come from? But those were small things, in the face of an otherwise really good book.

A very nice blend of horror, friendship and small town history. There were a couple spots where the story line threatened to veer off, but each time it tightened immediately and grabbed my attention again. A very good choice for libraries where teen readers like something to keep them looking out dark windows and under the bed at night.

Would likely appeal to fans of Mercedes Lackey books. Didn't hold my attention well.
