Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. An unforgettable novel about a young girl's traumatic awareness of her place in the world and the power of words to make the world a better place. Complex topics such as family relationships, racism, addiction and the drug trade are vividly brought up. It's hard not to read and take sides, although, in the end, we should all be on the side of equal opportunities for all from childhood and tolerance for difference as well as zero tolerance for any kind of violence, no matter the colour, religion, ethnicity or gender of the perpetrators. It's an excellent novel for discussion in a book club for adults or teenagers. It's tragic and very thought provoking and the ending is ultimately encouraging, although improving civil rights all over the world is an ongoing struggle.

This is one of the books which should be necessary for reading in school and talking about it!
It was strong, powerful, and emotional. There was a time when I was in shock and thinking about 'this is happening nowadays'. We need to use our voice to change the world. Act, because it matters what is your next move/decision.
I am absolutely sure I am going to read or listen to more books from Angie Thomas. I loved the way how she has written this book. I am thankful for her because she published this book. I needed to hear this story and everyone should read/listen to these words.

Put in perspective the craziness of racial conflicts. Today’s ally is tomorrow’s enemy and vice versa. The voice was very pleasant to listen to.

Wow, what a book! I know this is supposed to be a YA novel, but I’m a 40 year old man who was so engrossed with this story that it had me emotional in places. And I realize and respect the positive impact books like this can have on society. I’m inspired. Thanks Angie!

    The hate you give

This book is about a main character called Star, who lost one of her close friends to police brutality because he didn't learn how to correctly respond to the police ego. It follows the journey of the main character and what happens after that.

It also highlighted the neighborhood, and the circumstances of where both these children are from affected the outcome of what happened.

I really loved how the book was narrated and brought to life and how the main character was portrayed in the story of having a loving family

Her father and mother loved each other and were able to extend the love to their children and even children that weren't their own , creating a sense of community. Everyone knows that it's not always the case that black father's stick around to take care of their children.

I appreciated how she acted in the environment that she was placed in (her private school for better opportunities) as the few black students and how she didn't lose her identity but refined her identity by standing up for herself and others children of color ( her friend Maya) by checking her other friend for the problematic comments she made.

It's a good book and listening to it the author brought it to life by approaching such a serious topic in a comedic way I had a few laughs when the grandmother said ''next thing you know I wake up dead'' and as a jamaican that's something that we always day

Keep up the good work ✍️

I cannot rate this book highly enough and my review will not do this book justify.

Angie Thomas has written something so true and difficult that it hits hard but she manages to do it with a touch of humour and a whole lot of family.

Star doesn't just have the challenge of being one of the only black girls in her school but she also has to struggle with her own teenage relationship problems. Star believes these are the hardest things she'll have to deal with.

Except on one night that changes everything.

Angie brings a topic to the forefront which needs highlighting again and again. She makes sure that Star knows she is not alone and that she has a strong foundation with her family. Star's parents, uncle, grandmother and brothers made me laugh from start to finish. Every time they had an interaction there was some snarky comment or hidden innuendo.

I honestly should have read this sooner.

    GREAT BOOK!
First chapter and I was already ugly crying and sobbing in public.
This novel is full of feeling and brought all my social anger forth.
I have read some reviews saying that it has all the stereotypes, but even though we should not assume someone is just like a stereotype, we also need to understand that stereotypes are there for a reason and we should look more closely at these reasons , get to root of the issue.
This book is wonderful, so terribly sad but also full of hope, love, laughter, fear, insecurities and everything else that come with being a teenager, only that these teenagers live in a very mean and unjust world.
I am a brown Latina but my life was still full of privilege. It is so important for people like me to read these stories and internalise the struggle even if we will never truly understand it.
I simply loved this book even if broke my heart in every single chapter.

As an adult I do not count as the audience but I wanted to know, what the buzz was all about. And I must admit , I found it a bit tedious. Did I learn anything new? Unfortunately - not a lot. What touches me most about this whole "black lives matter" - issue, is how much attention it takes away from one of the main issues and that seems to be the gun situation . How can it be that you almost get used to having to duck under the table when you hear gun shots? And it seems to be seen as the appropriate reaction to shoot at whatever moves, in purpose to "protect one's family"? How many blacks are killed by shots fired by people of their own colour? And we are led to believe only police-brutality is the problem? - I doubt it, it goes much further that this....Unfortunately the discussion is in my view too narrow and God help when you defund the police further........ Who is helping us then?
