      Amy Ignatow - of Popularity Papers fame - is back with a brand new crew in The Mighty Odds. The story begins like many sixth grade tales, on a field trip. The characters are both unique and familiar - a contemporary Breakfast Club sans detention - abounding in diversity and personality. The class is just large enough to require two buses, a large and a small. One thing leads to another and a popular girl and a small group of "outcasts" end up with a single teacher on the small bus on the way home from a field trip. When the weather gets rough, the small bus violently crashes and those involved find that they now have very peculiar super powers. Very. Peculiar. Ignatow does a phenomenal job in this first book introducing her readers to the highly amusing cast of characters. The diversity is refreshing and issues are handled deftly and in a way that should make perfect sense to middle grade readers and adult alike. The issues raised are very important but don't feel heavy handed at all, which is a note difficult to hit. The pace is quite fast, making for an easy and enjoyable read. Ignatow's signature illustrations supplement the text and look just like many a sixth grader's notebook. The only glaring issue with the book is a very abrupt ending, but it's clear the author is setting the scene for many more stories, so it's likely that readers will ultimately forgive the cliff at the end of this first story. Here's hoping for much more from The Might Odds!

      Not only was this book hilarious, but I think it's way more honest about how actual 6th grade brains and language work. It has such an original story line even with the overdone social system (though I have an inkling that this was on purpose) and the characters feel real. Overall great book!

      Very original story. I liked the quirky characters. For a light hearted middle grade, this would have been a good graphic novel. A little crude language in it which for me took away from its whimsical charm as a middle grade book. The ending was puzzling however and again it would be great for a graphic novel but a little awkward for audio and typical book format.

      My kids were enjoying the story until the swearing become problematic They turned it off. I’m not sure why the author would think foul language would enhance the book. There are so many amazing books out there, no sense in wasting time on this one.

      On the way home from a school field trip, Nick, Farshad, Martina, and Cookie are all on a bus that turns over onto the side of the road. It isn't long after, that each of the four notices that they have developed quirky superpowers. While they are dealing with adjusting to a superpower, explosions keep happening all over town. They soon realize that their teacher is setting things on fire and making them explode, so the four kids try to figure out a way to stop their teacher.

      The Mighty Odds is an interesting story about everyday kids with superpowers, but it also presents several messages, including, having patience, being bullied, and being a bully. The powers developed by the characters are quirky enough, but another layer is added with a couple of distinct personality traits that stand out even more as the story goes on. Otherwise, however, there is very little character development. Overall, The Mighty Odds is a unique book about dealing with change and making the most of fate.

      A funny book and I like the premise of kids with mediocre powers. I didn't like how much swearing there was in a book about 12 year olds written for twelve year olds. Also it is a series but one of those series that feel more like a regular book chopped into pieces. Great for kids who are intimidated by thick books. Annoying for a person who would like to read a complete story.

      This is a fast-paced fantasy/action book. Told through the eyes of Nick Gross, a "nerd", the story takes us through the adventures of six fifth graders and their experience of gaining superpowers after a bus accident. The graphic novel elements of the story add much to the readers' understandings of the action. The narrative sections are short and full of action, fantasy and adventure. Readers will recognize some of the stereotypes represented in the book, as well as the repercussions of these stereotypes.This book will appear to middle school readers, especially males, who enjoy fantasy. This book will appeal to fans of graphic novels. I would recommend this to readers who like fast-moving, action filled books of the fantasy genre. This book will appeal to middle school readers who enjoy reading about cliques and stereotypes they may recognize through their own experiences.
