About this audiobook

Jesse thinks he’s caught a break when he, Emma (the girl of his dreams), and her friend are assigned by their newspaper to cover the opening weekend of a sprawling new state park. But the construction of the park has stirred an evil that has lain dormant for nearly a hundred years, and the three young people—as well as every man, woman, and child unlucky enough to be attending the Algonquin Falls grand opening—are about to encounter the most horrific creatures to ever walk the earth.

I loved this book but not the ending. I even like my horror stories to have decent endings!

Good concept but went on for too long. Would be much better if it was half the time.

Endless gore and pornfest. Too much action, not enough character. Even after listening to almost the whole audiobook, I still don't know who's who. Nor do I care. Glad they're dead. I think that the author failed at making me care for his characters. There is too much mindless action in it, which might be good for some, but not for me. It's pointless. The author's writing style, however, is awesome and creative. There are interesting and/or well written scenes in there. This book is an amalgam of both good and bad. If you want something which is action-packed, and full of guts, gore, and sexual references, then go for it. If you want more suspense and character development, then choose something else.

You always know you are in safe hands when you pick up a Jonathan Janz book.
If you like your gore and a drop of humour sprinkled into the mix, you can't go far wrong with Savage Species. Okay, so there's not that much humour, but it does come along at the right time.
It's a little different form Jonathan's other works, too. It has a kind of old classic creature-feature feel to it, an 80's kind of vibe. In a good way, of course. There's plenty of action, plenty of mayhem.
    You'll have fun.

I have to add here, that this is another fine Flame Tree audiobook.
Got to hand it to these guys. They certainly don't do things by half.
Hardback, paperback, ebook and audiobook, all released on the same day. And not just that, but putting things out at such a high standard is nothing short of incredible.
So glad I'm on Scribd and can experience these audiobook gems, even though I do own a hardback edition of this one.
It's one of those books that's been on my TBR pile a bit too long.
The rate all these new books are coming out, I just can't keep up.

Scoring this a solid 4 stars.

The only reason I'm not giving it five is I thought, for once, this could have been a little shorter.
Maybe I'm just reading too many shorter books these days. I don't know.
Anyways. It's good. It's worthy of your time. So you should go buy it, listen to it, whatever.
Just get to it. You won't regret it.

It honestly felt like it would never end. The first book Children of the Dark was marketed a YA. I hope to god this wasn't.

This book scared me so badly I had to take breaks reading it. This story line was absolutely amazing. Not only is the story well written but it is made to feel real. The first three pages sucks you in and keeps you there. Savage Species is a perfect horror story.

This is a full-on gore fest, creature feature. If that's your sort of thing, you'll love this. This is not a short book, and at the start I wondered how the narrative could be extended over so many pages. The plot is brilliant however, lacking repetition, continually evolving. New twists arise and separate threads return to weave a detailed roller coaster ride. Basically, even with being graphically gory, it's a damned good story. I loved the variety of vocabulary used, too. It's littered with brilliant words that seem too often shunned. It's a language feast without being over complicated or pretentious. It's dark, it's grim, but even in the most hopeless of times it retains a slither of hope that keeps you turning the pages. I wish things had ended better for some characters, but the ruthlessness of the story is what heightens its value as a horror novel. Many thanks to Flame Tree Press for the ARC. My review is my honest opinion.
