About this audiobook
Nominated for the 2019 Booker Prize
Narrated by BAFTA-winning actor Will Poulter
Kavanagh begins his life patrolling the Wall. If he's lucky, if nothing goes wrong, he only has two years of this, 729 more nights. The best thing that can happen is that he survives and gets off the Wall and never has to spend another day of his life anywhere near it. He longs for this to be over; longs to be somewhere else. He will soon find out what Defenders do and who the Others are. Along with the rest of his squad, he will endure cold and fear day after day, night after night. But somewhere, in the dark cave of his mind, he thinks: wouldn't it be interesting if something did happen, if they came, if you had to fight for your life?
John Lanchester's thrilling, hypnotic new novel is about why the young are right to hate the old. It's about a broken world you will recognise as your own-and about what might be found when all is lost.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not the best ever dystopian novel but interesting book imho
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Slow and boring at first but really engaging from the second part onward . Very good story .
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Captivating story, and well written. Would recommend giving it a read
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It was a case of waiting, feeling like There was a great writer giving you a great message and all you had to do was wait .... then nothing. An abrupt halt to the book which left me disappointed. Which was a shame as it could of delivered so much. The narration was flawless.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Pretty good book, but didn't have that kind of can't put the book form kind of story, no motivation to keep reading
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5“+”
I liked the story and the setting and also the writing style. The author creates powerful images and the world described, even if the level of detail is scarce, remains with the reader.

The plot is fairly simple and the characters’ depth is not a strong point.
We do not get to know too many things about the Others, their image remains blurred and the we have only a narrow perspective on how the world outside the wall survives ( some plunder, some cooperate). These were missed opportunities in turning this novel into a real dystopia. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Interesting story, but very flat. No Charakter painted in any relatable way. Three or four good ideas make no good book. I wished the whole bookm would have been written by someone with more talent in transforming speech into sensible feelings and experiences.
