About this audiobook

**A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick and New York Times bestseller**

A year after a summer guest dies under suspicious circumstances, her best friend lives under a cloud of grief and suspicion in this “fast-paced and gripping” (People) thriller filled with “dizzying plot twists and multiple surprise endings” (The New York Times Book Review).

Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline; and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors.

Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl—but that’s just what happens with visitor Sadie Loman and Littleport resident Avery Greer. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable—until Sadie is found dead. While the police rule the death a suicide, Avery can’t help but feel there are those in the community, including a local detective and Sadie’s brother, Parker, who blame her. Someone knows more than they’re saying, and Avery is intent on clearing her name, before the facts get twisted against her.

“A riveting read…from master of suspense, Megan Miranda,” (Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author of The Good Girl) The Last House Guest is a clever, twisty mystery that brilliantly explores the elusive nature of memory and the complexities of female friendships.

Editor's Note

Book club pick…

Reese Witherspoon ended summer with what she dubs “the ultimate thriller” as her Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine pick for August 2019. “Picture this: It’s the last night of summer in Littleport, Maine and Avery Greer discovers her best friend is missing. Was she murdered? Was it a suicide? This story will have you guessing until the very end,” Witherspoon wrote in the announcement post.

This book is so wordy, it’s so easy to zone out. I figured it out very early on and was just waiting, waiting, waiting for the story to get there. The author really took the long way around.

A slow and tedious read, no real thrill or suspense. The characters are not very engaging and the character driven storyline is dull. Thumbs down on this one. No real wow factor

Unfortunately there’s really nothing good to say about this book. The narrator initially seemed pleasant but she has a strange inflection that’s applied in the wrong parts of sentences. Given the novel was set and ‘told’ by a Maine native - perhaps someone from that region would have made sense??.. though the story itself was so long I opted for chipmunk speed to get through.
The first 3/4 of the book portrays the main character in a way that leaves her very unlikeable… the character is flat/poorly developed and overall just uninteresting. Towards the end a few more redeeming traits are added to her personality.. though by then I was just eager to be done.
The mystery also lacked depth and the path taken to unravel it was unnecessarily bogged down with unrelated small town details that added nothing to the story.
I’ll be avoiding both the author and the narrator.
    Skip this one!!

The end was phenomenal, but I won’t lie. There were like 10 chapters too many that had nothing to do with anything and were extremely redundant. The end was good though.

The dragged out story was so-so with it's excessive wording.

The ending was the best part. Good book just a bit slow in the beginning.

Eh, was a little disappointed. Kind of confusing to keep track of and didn’t make me want to finish it.

So redundant. The same details and stories are repeated over and over. Most of the book was not suspenseful either. Here and there a prick of a thrill and then back to the redundant details of the same party for half of the book

This story could have been told in 10 chapters. Most of the book is just fillers. Way to slow and way to long for this plot. I only listened the whole thing because I've already wasted hours on it so I hoped the end would be somewhat interesting

Honestly, not to sound like a prude, but I’m always turned off by the language. It’s usually unnecessary and often excessive. That said, it’s a solid story with only one twist I didn’t see coming. The characters overall are all pretty awful and I was constantly amazed at the naivety of the main character. She redeemed herself in the end and I was fairly happy with the resolution. This isn’t one that will blow you away and it’s slow, but it’s still a good book to listen to when you have nothing going on.

I usually figure out the "Who done it" right away but this book had me changing who I thought did it a few times and not knowing for sure until near the end! Loved it!

I wanted to like it. Decent reviews. Set in the state I live in. I just couldn’t do it though. It was cliche and predictable. Drawn out and anticlimactic. I’m not sure if it is Rebekah Ross’s narration that bugs me or the author’s style of writing but the “I said” “He said” “She said” after every other sentence was as annoying as nails grating on a chalkboard. Disappointed I wasted a credit on this when so many other great books come out this month.

I should've read reviews before starting this book. The book was dragging on and on but I was curious to find out what happened to Sadie.

Kept me intrigued until the end! The author did a great job of describing places and people so well that I could picture them as I read. I also enjoyed that the characters had depth, no one was all good or all bad, so I really had no sense of "whodunnit"!

A complete waste of time! Cliché, predictable and a drag. Honestly, the plot was boring and the ending seemed forced. Couldn’t connect to the characters at all and wouldn’t recommend.

Too many cliches of thriller novels in my opinion.
and the big reveal I saw coming. I kept hoping I was wrong so that there could be a better reveal.

Everything was "that's what this place did to you..."
