About this audiobook

Miss Eleanor Sheffield is a talented evaluator of antiquities, trained to know the difference between a genuine artifact and a fraud. But with her father's passing and her uncle's decline into dementia, the family business is at risk. In the Victorian era, unmarried Eleanor cannot run Sheffield Brothers alone. The death of a longtime client, Baron Lydney, offers an unexpected complication when Eleanor is appointed the temporary trustee of the baron's legendary collection. She must choose whether to donate the priceless treasures to a museum or allow them to pass to the baron's only living son, Harry?the man who broke Eleanor's heart. Eleanor distrusts the baron's motives and her own ability to be unbiased regarding Harry's future. Harry claims to still love her and Eleanor yearns to believe him, but his mysterious comments and actions fuel her doubts. When she learns an Italian beauty accompanied him on his return to England, her lingering hope for a future with Harry dims. With the threat of debtor's prison closing in, Eleanor knows that donating the baron's collection would win her favor among potential clients, saving Sheffield Brothers. But the more time she spends with Harry, the more her faith in him grows. Might Harry be worthy of his inheritance, and her heart, after all? As pressures mount and time runs out, Eleanor must decide whom she can trust?who in her life is false or true, brass or gold?and what is meant to be treasured.

This book is the first in the Victorian Ladies Series and is about Eleanor Sheffield and her family business. Her father has recently passed and she is trying to keep the business afloat. Her uncle, who was a twin to her father, has recently exhibited signs of dementia. Eleanor is an evaluator of antiquities and very talented. The death of a long time client of the business, Baron Lydney, left a provision in his will that Eleanor is supposed to evaluate the collection that he has. After evaluation, she is to determine whether the collection stays in the family in the care of his son Harry, or have it go into a museum.Eleanor had had a relationship with Harry and when he never returned to her and propose she became disillusioned with him and does not trust him. Harry does come back but she does not think that there is a future for them, he has brought back an Italian beauty and she is not sure what their relationship is. Harry is nothing but persistent and the more time she spends with him the more her trust returns. The problem is that her uncle has not paid any bills and the debt collectors are at her doorstep. In those days there was debtors prison if bills were not paid. Because she is a woman and her uncle is not well, the remaining clients of Sheffield Brothers have developed a distrust to her. She must do all she can to reclaim their trust. As time goes by and with her investigation, she does turn out to be a lady of a thousand treasures as she makes her determination about the Lydney collection. As usual, Sandra Byrd has written another enjoyable first book to what I hope will be a great series. A gothic novel set during the mid to late 1800s in Victorian England, a time where women were not allowed to do much except stay in the home, Eleanor turns out to be a strong woman in a time dominated by men. I love reading about strong women and I love anything by Sandra as she does remarkable research. She always tells a great story and the characters are more than memorable! If you love a great historical fiction novel, then give this one a try!

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. I did not want to put this book down. I loved this story. It was nice to read about something a little different. I enjoyed reading about a female that had an interesting job. She really knew what she was doing. Eleanor has to decide if Harry is a fraud or if he is really as good as he seems. I so enjoyed reading how this tale unfolded. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Title: Lady of a Thousand Treasures (The Victorian Ladies Series #1)Author: Sandra ByrdPages: 464Year: 2018Publisher: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc.My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.Eleanor Sheffield has been taught by her father to evaluate, authenticate whether the piece is genuine or fake, and place a value on antiquities. Their usual clients are the nobility. Her father dies, leaving the business in the hands of her ailing uncle and Eleanor running the business. Eleanor is an unmarried woman in the 1860s in England and unable to own and run the business on her own. She is in a quandary as to what to do when an unexpected death of a client presents a golden opportunity for Eleanor. However, she must face the man who broke her heart who also happens to be the deceased client’s only son, standing to inherit his father’s huge collection of antiquities amassed over a lifetime of collecting. She must decide whether Harry is worthy to receive this inheritance or if the collection should be donated to a museum. Her home is broken into and her uncle assaulted. Why? With more interaction with Harry, her heart begins to thaw, but can she trust him again? He claims to still have love for her in his heart, but can she believe him now?The setting of place and time is one of my favorites, and the author does a great job of making feel like I’m in that time period with the characters. The mystery aspect was appealing and reading about how Eleanor evaluated artifacts was very interesting. The story did drag in some places, slowing down my reading of it and taking away some of my enjoyment of it. However, I like the author’s writing style and the historical information presented in the story. I am interested to see who the subject of the second novel in the series is going to be, but I will have to wait as the second novel isn’t being released until the spring of 2020. While this first book is on the lengthy side, it is still one worth reading.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Lady of a Thousand Treasures is the first novel I've read by Sandra Byrd. I thoroughly enjoyed her beautiful writing. The plot and scenes were creative and unique. Unexpected intrigue and plot twists surprised me. The story held my attention from beginning to end. I was fascinated by Eleanor's knowledge of antiquities and ability to determine an item's authenticity or lack thereof. Some of her methods were unexpected and I appreciated the extensive research the author must have done in preparing this novel. I also enjoyed Eleanor's character development as she wrestles with the dichotomy between her love of treasures and her lack of feeling treasured by anyone. Readers looking for an inspirational tale rich in historical detail and intrigue will enjoy Lady of a Thousand Treasures. I would consider this more of a historical fiction novel than a historical romance. The love story between Eleanor and Harry is gentle and sweet, more of a renewal of past affection than a falling in love story. Lady of a Thousand Treasures is the first novel in Sandra Byrd's Victorian Ladies series and I am eager for the next installment.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this complimentary book from the publisher. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21) — this verse kept running through my mind as I read the newest historical romance/mystery by Sandra Byrd. As I have come to expect from this talented author, Lady of A Thousand Treasures, is outstanding! Set in the Victorian-era, this novel uses as its premise the collecting-fever of the monied men and women of the time. The historic details whisk you back to the resplendent drawing rooms displaying the artifacts of ancient civilizations and priceless art, while also exposing the downtrodden poor that the rich sought to ignore. I loved this complexly crafted work and highly recommend it.Eleanor Sheffield struggles to keep her late father’s valuating business afloat despite the dwindling commissions of patrons and the infirmity of her uncle. Her entire life has been dedicated to examining and valuing treasures — Roman coins, glassware, pottery, etc. — but a woman of her time is expected to take second place to father or husband. Given a challenging task by her childhood friend’s deceased father, she endeavors to act in a just manner, but there are many foes known and unknown that are acting against her.Lady of A Thousand Treasures has an air of mystery from the outset. Indeed, there are a number of puzzling circumstances that Eleanor encounters. She is doggedly determined to meet every challenge, a trait that is both admirable and foolish. Her pride in her strength and self-sufficiency leads her to trouble time and time again. The novel is told in the first person, and the reader gets a genuine look into Eleanor’s motives and thoughts. She holds nothing back. Her take on those around her is not always accurate, but enough is shared for the reader to come to his/her own conclusions. I found myself questioning all who Eleanor encounters. Even her lifelong friend (and true love) is open to doubt. Attention to historic detail gives this book a great deal of authenticity. The scenes involving life in prison are particularly eye-opening. Eleanor’s faith is tested throughout the novel, and she sometimes wavers in her trust in God’s goodness and provision. I found that made Eleanor even more real and relatable. Her feeling of being un-treasured touched my heart. Her assertion that “I am no one’s treasure” truly struck a chord.Lady of A Thousand Treasures is a treasure of its own. A beautifully written book, it will keep you enthralled until the very last page is turned. I was sorry to have to leave Eleanor’s world. I know this story will stay with me for quite a long time.Highly Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Just Read Tours and Tyndale for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

This is, I believe my fifth book by Ms. Byrd – I obviously enjoy her writing or I wouldn’t keep coming back every time she wrote another one. Lady of a Thousand Treasures is the start of a new series – Victorian Ladies. The first lady is Miss Eleanor Sheffield, a young woman well educated in antiquities and objets d’art. Her father and uncle have run Sheffield Brothers, a company that sources such items for the nobility and other rich patrons. But now her father had dies and Eleanor is trying to continue on. She has been given a rather large commission but it involves the man she thought she would marry – can she trust herself and more importantly, can she trust him? There are several plots running through the book war in Venice, the treatment of the poor, women’s rights and the theft and counterfeiting of antiquities from countries at war among others. They all come together with a flirtation and romance between Miss Sheffield and Harry, Lord Lydney – the man whose father’s death has given her a large commission. But Harry has let her down in the past and his father has given her some information that leads her to believe he has turned bad. While she is trying to figure out if Harry is telling her the truth she is also trying to keep her business afloat – and deal with her uncle who is exhibiting signs of what we now know as Alzheimer’s.So, as you can see there is a lot going on in this tale and yet it never loses track of the main plot – that of a woman with a task who is not sure she can trust the man she loves. Even though deep down she knows he is everything that she knows to be true. It was a good read and an interesting one. It covered a number of issues that you don’t usually see in books – and I always enjoy these spunky female heroines. Eleanor is an intelligent, educated woman in a time where women were not generally thought to be more than marriage material. I also thoroughly enjoyed all of the discussion about the art objects. For this art history major that was pure delight.

Lady of a Thousand Treasures by Sandra Byrd is the first book in her Victorian Ladies series. Written in the first-person, Ms. Byrd immerses you into the middle of 1866 England. Where collecting antiques is a very common hobby of the wealthy. If you’re going to spend a lot of money on an antique you have to know if it’s authentic. That’s where Eleanor Sheffield and Sheffield Brothers come in. They evaluate your treasures. Eleanor learned the business from her father before his passing and now she works with her ailing uncle. The story started off a little slow for me but it didn’t take it long to draw me in. I enjoyed learning more about different collectables without being over whelmed by technical talk. It was a great story and had it all; lost love, suspense, betrayal, and then redemption and a stronger love. This is a well-written story that deserves multiple reads. I can’t wait for the next installment. I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Sandra Byrd does it again with her newest book “Lady of a Thousand Treasures!” Her first book in the “Victorian Ladies” series is full of mystery, history and romance!Sandra Byrd is one of my favorite contemporary authors because she writes history with such a depth and knowledge that few others in the genre achieve. “Lady of a Thousand Treasures” is a Gothic romance set in Victorian England and is a book to savor. The opening scene of a gloomy funeral, complete with a raging storm outside, will immediately hook you. Ms. Byrd uses amazing descriptions, bringing the reader into the story and time period. I love the main character, Eleanor, who really grows as a character throughout the story, both in her faith and as a person. There is so much faith content in this story, which I love. Eleanor prays, visits women in prison, asks the Lord for wisdom and guidance and quotes scripture. I appreciate the realistic way she at time struggles in her relationship with the Lord. Eleanor is also trying to test what’s true and what’s false, not only in antiquities, but also in people. She struggles with pride and striving to earn others’ approval; which was encouraging to me as well, as I’m often a people pleaser. Eleanor’s love story is so romantic. It’s probably the most well written swoon-worthy romance of the year!“Lady of a Thousand Treasures” is a keeper for sure! This Gothic, Victorian romance includes a good dose of mystery and danger, and has a beautiful message about leaving our burdens with the Lord and learning to discern the true from the false. Content: This is a clean read with a PG for content. Some examples of the content are: mention of a man drinking himself to death; the devil is referred to; a man suggests a dalliance with a woman; a few subtle references to a couple’s wedding night.Rating: I give this book 5 stars!Genre: Christian fiction; Gothic; Romance; Victorian; MysteryI want to thank Tyndale House Publishers, Sandra Byrd and Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for the complimentary copy of this book for review.
