About this audiobook

During a rare white Christmas at Brambledean Court, the widow Elizabeth, Lady Overfield, defies convention by falling in love with a younger man in the latest novel in the Westcott series. After her husband's passing, Elizabeth Overfield decides that she must enter into another suitable marriage. That, however, is the last thing on her mind when she meets Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, at the Westcott Christmas house party. She simply enjoys his company as they listen to carolers on Christmas Eve, walk home from church together on Christmas morning, and engage in a spirited snowball fight in the afternoon. Both are surprised when their sled topples them into a snowbank and they end up sharing an unexpected kiss. They know there is no question of any relationship between them, for she is nine years older than he. They return to London the following Season, both committed to finding other, more suitable matches. Still they agree to share one waltz at each ball they attend. This innocuous agreement proves to be one that will topple their worlds, as each dance steadily ensnares them in a romance that forces the two to question what they are willing to sacrifice for love. . . .

It amuses me a very large amount that I am reviewing Rat Queens vol 2 and a Mary Balogh novel in the same sitting, and I really, really enjoyed both of them deeply. You could probably find more polar opposite books, but I bet you'd have to put some effort in.

Anyway, the wonderfully romantic and highly entertaining Westcott saga continues -- this time with a scandalous May-December (ok, really more like June-August) match, with our dear Elizabeth Overfield and Colin Handrich making a match of things. I really enjoy how Balogh explores the theme of family in these books -- evoking the nostalgia and the dream of great family, while being very clear about what crap family looks like and how to reject it. For whatever reason, I find that quite satisfying.

I haven't enjoyed the Westcott series as much as Balogh's others I've read, but this one was good.

Such a lovely story. I wanted to read about Elizabeth and Colin right after Someone to Wed, and I enjoyed their friendship turned love. Age differences now when the woman is older are a big deal, and Balogh does a good job of showing how it might be over two hundred years ago.

Widow Elizabeth Overfield knows she must marry again. She has a suitable man in mind but is attracted to Colin Handrich, the brother of her sister-in-law and a man eight years younger than herself. Colin also finds Elizabeth intriguing despite the age difference. He's also on the marriage mart, and the two decide to share one waltz at each ball they attend as they look for their prospective spouses. This is a slow-burn romance and a lovely story. Despite circumstances and the disapproval of family and friends, Elizabeth and Colin forge a lasting relationship. The writing is excellent as per usual in a Balogh book. And it's always fun to see what the rest of the extended Westcott clan is up to.

Someone to Trust by Mary Balogh is a 2018 Berkley publication. A winter romance that will warm your heart! While attending a Christmas Party at the Wescott’s which also doubled as a wedding, the widow Elizabeth Overton and Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, spend some easy going and friendly time together. However, they are both aware of a little something extra simmering just below the surface. Although they are both convinced it is time for them to marry, it most certainly would not be to one another. For starters, Elizabeth is nine years older that Colin! What a scandal that would be!! As the London season approaches, Elizabeth and Colin plan to join in, albeit, solo… but, they have promised to share at least one set of dances together at each ball they attend… and not just any dance- a waltz! This one got off to a very sluggish start unfortunately. In fact, I had intended to read this one around the holidays but put it aside because it just wasn’t working for me right then. But, because Mary Balogh is one of my favorite historical romance authors, I was determined to give it another try. I am glad I stuck with the book, as it turned out to be a beautiful and heartwarming love story. As the title suggests, there are some trust issues involved, especially for Elizabeth, who is determined not to give in to romantic love as she had with her first husband, which ended in disaster. “ I want my own home. I want to be a part of a couple so that I do not have to feel lonely at events like family Christmases. I want- I hope for- children.” Your need is emotional, he said, yet you look for safety and dependability. My need is practical, yet I dream of love. I would like to be in love with the woman I marry. But there are so many other considerations that I suppose are more important. I dream of perfection, Elizabeth. You do not dream at all.” Can Colin convince Elizabeth she can have trust, stability and romantic love or will she break his heart?Once this story finally got moving, I was glued to the pages, loving every conflicted and emotional moment.Overall, this one isn’t the strongest book in the series, but despite the slow start, I ended up thoroughly enjoying Elizabeth and Colin’s story. I’m happy they defied convention, despite the odds, and fulfilled their dreams of a happily ever after. 3.5 stars*If you haven’t read the previous installments in the series, I wouldn’t suggest starting out with this one. While reading the series in order is always ideal, at the very least read the forth book before starting this one.

She's an older widow and he's a very eligible bachelor but there's an attraction here and they both want more than what's being offered to them, they keep coming back to each other but there's 9 years between them with her being the older. He also has to deal with his mother's macinations. The initial meeting is at the Westcott Christmas party and they both leave expecting to leave the attraction behind, but fate intervenes and it will change everything.Loved the story and the characters, great fun.

Unusually heartwarming!Decidedly a romance with a difference! Widowed Elizabeth, Lady Overfield's story is a breath of fresh air in the regency romance genre. Elizabeth is nine years older than the man she becomes involved with in a plot that engenders several twists and where love blooms unexpectedly. This is a romance that could / should never be. (Yet, if the sexes were reversed and the age differences even greater, no one would even raise an eyebrow! I love the irony!) The subject of Elizabeth's reluctant feelings is Colin Handrich, Lord Hodges, recently come into his title. Colin has no trouble with their age difference. Elizabeth however is undone by her feelings, her problems with trust, and her and Colin's age difference! What can I say? Love in the afternoon comes calling. The action started off slowly in a pleasurable white Christmas environment, gradually filling out the back stories of Elizabeth and Colin, building to its crescendo, and with that progression I found myself hanging on every word.I loved this contribution to the Westcott series.A NetGalley ARC

Title: Someone to TrustAuthor: Mary BaloghPublisher: Berkley Publishing GroupReviewed By: Arlena DeanRating: FourReview:"Someone to Trust" by Mary BaloghMy Thoughts....I enjoyed this historical romantic fiction that featured Lady Overfield and Colin Handrich, [Lord Hodges]. With Elizabeth being a widow and nine years a senior to Colin it will be quite a interesting read how these two find their way to each other and to think they met at a family Christmas holiday. What will happen when Colin and Elizabeth start to have feelings for each other? However, Elizabeth will accept a proposal from another Lord but after this fiancee verbally treats her badly she breaks that proposal. Why was Colin so determined to make Elizabeth his wife after all of the Society gossiping that was going on about her? Will Elizabeth give into her feeling even though Society just didn't approve of a older woman marrying a younger man? I loved how these two kindred spirits even though this age thing that was taboo at this time were able to get beyond that situation. I will say there were quite a few relatives in this read so you will have to keep up with all that is going on. It seems like Elizabeth had some wonderful relatives and friends that were with her but it seems like for Colin, well it was quite the opposite for his family. I really didn't care for them [Colin's mom and sister] at all! Well, to get it all you will have to pick up "Someone to Trust" to see how this story will all come out. At the end I was left wondering a little about who was Colin's father. This was indeed a good read of how one must learn that trust and true feelings is what happiness is all about.
