About this audiobook
Mac knows he's a dead man. His only hope is to join another cattle drive on the Goodnight-Loving Trail, deep in New Mexico Territory. The journey ahead is even deadlier than the hired guns behind him. His trail boss is an ornery cuss. His crew mate is the owner's spoiled son. And the route is overrun with kill-crazy rustlers and bloodthirsty Comanche. To make matters worse, Mac's would-be killers are closing in fast. But when the cattle owner's son is kidnapped, the courageous young cook has no choice but to jump out of the frying pan-and into the fire . . .

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Title: Die by the Gun (Chuckwagon Series #2)Author: William W. Johnstone ad J. A. JohnstonePages: 304Year: 2018Publisher: PinnacleMy rating: 5 out of 5 stars.Dewey McKenzie is now a seasoned chuckwagon cook, but is there more to him? Readers will discover that this male character has more hidden talent besides being able to cook good chow with little resources. Dewey “Mac” McKenzie is in a bar fight when he runs into a cowboy he cooked chow for in the first book of the series, The Chuckwagon Trail. Once again, Mac must fight or die. Then, he ends up running, not ahead of a posse, but killers who are seeking revenge. In the least likely way, Mac finds himself employed and on the trail again as a chuckwagon cook. But it’s a different crew, trail and boss. Plus, as readers will enjoy discovering, there is a whole new set of problems Mac must navigate in order to live and hopefully reach the end of the drive successfully. The various situations Mac is involved in, some of which made me chuckle while others were over quick, will keep you turning pages for hours.Mac is able to know when to pull his hog leg and when to try and talk his way clear of trouble. Mac has a sense of right and wrong and is still able to cook up good chow with very little variety on the trail. Mac is pursued by Indians, bounty hunters, and his past while fighting the weather, near drowning and almost being bush-wacked more times than I could count!I think readers will enjoy getting lost in the pages of a trail drive that has never ending challenges! There is action, danger, adventure, bullets, and more in the life of the fictional character of Dewey “Mac” McKenzie. I really enjoyed the nonstop journey along with the twists and turns of the plot. I cannot wait to read the third book in the series titled, Hill of Beans. Grab a copy and be prepared for a wild ride! Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.
