About this audiobook

“Deliciously entertaining, this Australian novel is packed with wit and suspense, and it also delivers sharp insights about family dynamics and love.” — People Magazine

A twisty, compelling new audiobook about one woman's complicated relationship with her mother-in-law that ends in death...

From the moment Lucy met her husband’s mother, she knew she wasn’t the wife Diana had envisioned for her perfect son. Exquisitely polite, friendly, and always generous, Diana nonetheless kept Lucy at arm’s length despite her desperate attempts to win her over. And as a pillar in the community, an advocate for female refugees, and a woman happily married for decades, no one had a bad word to say about Diana…except Lucy.

That was five years ago.

Now, Diana is dead, a suicide note found near her body claiming that she longer wanted to live because of the cancer wreaking havoc inside her body.

But the autopsy finds no cancer.

It does find traces of poison, and evidence of suffocation.

Who could possibly want Diana dead? Why was her will changed at the eleventh hour to disinherit both of her children, and their spouses? And what does it mean that Lucy isn’t exactly sad she’s gone?

Fractured relationships and deep family secrets grow more compelling with every chapter in this twisty, captivating new audiobook from Sally Hepworth.

So this is the perfect book to listen to while you’re cleaning house or driving somewhere. It’s not gonna blow your mind. It’s not very insightful. The characters are kinda shallow. I was a bit annoyed at the end that the author didn’t do more character development. But it’s still a fun “who done it.”

While I love Sally Hepworth’s writing style, this book was just okay for me.

Pacing is quite slow throughout most of the story. We focus on an overload of daily drama with a lot of unlikable characters.

The story is told via past and present timelines, though we spend most of our time in the past. I wasn’t that surprised by the big reveal, probably because the slow pace gave me lots of time to ponder the outcome.

I did enjoy the way my opinions of people changed over time, as we got to know more about them and their motivations. I still didn’t like any of them, but I understood their motivations.

Hepworth’s writing is engaging, making this an enjoyable read even though it wasn’t a favorite.

I alternated between reading my hardcover copy and listening to the audiobook. The narration is fantastic, and I enjoyed the story more when I was immersed in the audio.

A good mystery. Similar in some ways to Liane Moriarty books, and she’s one of my favorite authors. I rarely give 5 stars. This book had interesting characters and kept me going back and forth and guessing till the end.

I really enjoy this author and this story was very intriguing. I really liked listening to Diana's side of the story, there is so much more to this character than what you think. Sally Hepworth writes stories depicting the every day drama of normal lives, this is the appeal of her stories. I plan to listen to every single one of her books as I have yet to be disappointed. Her stories are just good reading escapism enjoyment. The narration is excellent, Barrie Kreinik always does a wonderful job.
