    It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the High Sierras. But Smoke Jensen and his children, Louis and Denise, won't let a little snow stop them from heading to Reno for the holidays. There are two ways for them to get there: the long way, going around the Sierra Nevada Mountains, or the short way, going right through them. Smoke decides to take a gamble. They'll follow the trail that, decades earlier, brought the legendary Donner Party to a gruesome, tragic end . . .

    And so the journey begins. The Jensens share a stagecoach with a stranger who's planning to rob a bank. Smoke wants to stop him, as well as his notorious gang of outlaws. But he's outgunned and outnumbered. And when a blizzard traps them in the mountains, he's out of luck too. Like the Donner Party before them, the Jensens will be forced to do whatever it takes to survive. This time, they're hoping history doesn't repeat itself. But sometimes, the ghosts of the past just won't stay buried . . .

If you haven’t read any of the yearly Christmas stories offered by the Johnstone family, then now’s the time to join the fun! The Jenson family is experiencing the holiday times together each year. Sounds easy, right? Well, for the Jenson family the holidays aren’t always peaceful.The story begins in a museum with a little boy looking at a stagecoach, wondering if it’s the real deal. His mother isn’t sure it is authentic. As they are talking about the coach and the mysterious engraving of two letters, an older gentleman comes out and starts talking about it being real. The story then proceeds with a flashback to a time when a part of the Jensen family was in the stagecoach. From then on, the action is nonstop all the way to the last page, with the older gentlemen ending his tale. Can you just picture a wide-eyed youngster captivated by the tale being told?I always wonder how each year the Johnstones can come up with such unique and exciting adventures, but they do! I thoroughly enjoyed this story as it shows how generations can share the stories of the past in a way that just captures the imagination of people no matter their age. The use of mystery, danger, daring escapades during a blizzard and so much more will keep you up reading this novel! I am glad the author took time to build the story and plot, using words to paint pictures that just popped into my mind.I look forward to the Johnstone Christmas novels each year. They are well written and fun to sit with a hot drink and get lost in the book for a while. If you have missed the action and daring adventures of the past books, don’t wait any longer! The titles are: The Lone Star Christmas, A Rocky Mountain Christmas, A Big Sky Christmas, A Frontier Christmas, A Texas Hill Country Christmas, A Colorado Christmas, An Arizona Christmas and A High Sierra Christmas.       This was amazing! I selected it to review on NetGalley thinking it would probably be a classic Christmas fluff piece (which I am in no way disapproving of ? ) but what a pleasant surprise awaited me! This was real cowboy struggles with strong people everywhere you turned. Horses, stagecoaches, trains, avalanches, bank robbers and gunslingers! This book was a true gift to read.
