About this audiobook
To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where she'd spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.
Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone she's usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Spanish charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to something . . . more.
Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.
Something that can never, ever be.
Or so she thinks.
Contains mature themes.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely superb. Toxic, delicious, enticing, captivating, heartwrenching, I loved every single second! Oh my god infinity stars
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I wanted to love this book. I really did, but unfortunately for me it was a DNF.
The story was a about a young woman going to Spain to teach English. There she meets older, married man Mateo and they begin to fall for one another.
-> Keyword being married. I don't usually mind cheating in books, but this one rubbed me the wrong way. I prefer the married person to push the other away showing some sort of devotion to their spouse. Not Mateo... He pursued Vera and pushed his wife away. This was a very unattractive characteristic. When the book boyfriend loses his appeal I check out.
Vera however, intrigued me. She was real and I liked that a lot. I enjoyed reading about her emotions and how she realized that Mateo was off limits. Eventually though she gave in.
About halfway through I had to close the book. At that point I expected some sort of excuse to why Mateo was so uninterested in his wife. Was she mean? Had she cheated? Something to make me feel okay with him being with Vera.
The writing was good, but the storyline really fell short for me. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have to be honest.. At first I wasn't sure how I was going to rate this book... I wasn't even sure if I loved it at first. Which is crazy because I love everything Karina writes. But by the time I got to the halfway mark or so I was so freaking pulled in, I just couldn't put it down. My heart at war with my conscious. How could something that is so wrong, feel so right!
You really can't help who you fall in love with. No matter how hard you try to fight it the heart wants what the heart wants. I wanted to hate Vera but there is just no way I could. She fought her feelings for so long. Denied them even to herself for as long as she could. By the 3rd half of the book I was an emotional wreck right along with Vera. I swear this book made my cry more than twice. Hell I think I cried about 5 times. At that point I realized just how drawn into the story I had become. Without even meaning to, I had infested my feelings into these characters.
Mateo was a tough one for me. I loved him pretty quickly, but then again there was a few times I wanted to junk punch him. While I understand some of his actions, I just hated that he wanted Vera to hide who she was and her name when she met his daughter. I just felt like that was so wrong. Also, I get why he wanted Vera to respect Sophia, BUT he was an asshole about it in my opinion. He didn't even try to defend her and that just broke my heart right along with her! But in the end, I found I loved him. He made it so hard to stay mad at him.
I think for Karina's first stab at purely romance, no guns or scary shit, that she did an amazing job. She tackled such a controversial subject matter and did it well. Even though no one likes cheating or to be cheated on, I think the message was loud and clear in this book.. Sometimes your morals just don't stand a chance in the face of true love. You can't help what the heart wants. With the heart in love there is no black and white, no right or wrong. It is all a gray area. Love doesn't always make sense. It isn't always conventional or convenient. Love is Love. It just is.
