About this audiobook

New York Times bestselling author Laura Griffin’s Desperate Girls is a tightly wound, fast-paced romantic thriller that follows a desperate woman on the run as she hides from a killer’s symbolic revenge spree.

Defense attorney Brynn Holloran is right at home among cops, criminals, and tough-as-nails prosecutors. With her sharp wit and pointed words, she has a tendency to intimidate, and she likes it that way. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom, but in her personal life, she’s a mess.

When a vicious murderer she once helped prosecute resurfaces and starts a killing spree to wipe out those who put him behind bars, one thing becomes clear: Brynn needs to run for her life.

When the police come up empty-handed, Brynn turns to a private security firm for protection. But when she defies advice and gets involved in the investigation, even the former Secret Service agent assigned to protect her may not be able to keep her safe. With every new clue she discovers, Brynn is pulled back into the vortex of a disturbing case from her past.

As the clock ticks down on a manhunt, Brynn’s desperate search for the truth unearths long-buried secrets and reignites a killer’s fury.

Twists were great! But why have rapes in the story?

A light read, but entertaining. Easy to listen to while multi-tasking - no heavy thinking required. Fast paced. Good love scenes. Good suspense.

Very good book. So many twists and turns it is unpredictable!

It skipped key events. Couldn’t back up correctly and while book was great it was hard to follow when it was missing key parts and extremely frustrating

Better to read the book than listen to the audio one. Not to be unkind but the person narrating this is terrible.

Brynn Holloran is a prosecuting attorney turned defense lawyer about to defend a teenager against murder charges in a Dallas courtroom. When a notorious serial killer that she helped put behind bars escapes prison, Brynn's boss hires Wolfe Security to protect her and her second chair, Ross. Brynn balks at the idea of having her movements restricted, but her boss insists as other law enforcement personnel involved in the serial killer case start turning up murdered. Sparks fly when Brynn resists the efforts of the attractive bodyguard, Erik Morgan and his team, who have been assigned as her protection detail.
Desperate Girls is well written with snappy dialogue and a good plot line including a nice twist at the end, however, the bodyguard/protectee romance has been done so often, that it is difficult to find any new ground to cover. I enjoyed this book but found it lacking in originality.

A defense attorney, Brynn Holloran, is working on defending a wrongly accused young man when a dangerous escaped convict out for revenge, targets all those involved in his conviction. Brynn and her co-worker worked on his case so her firm hires an elite security firm as bodyguards. Brynn isn't thrilled but as murders pile up, the manhunt is unsuccessful and the danger increases she begins to accept that there is a real danger. It also doesn't hurt that Erik, an attractive former military and ex-secret serviceman, is her bodyguard. This story has plenty of intrigue, suspense and romance. I enjoyed the mix of crime, police procedure, and courtroom drama. There is a big twist at the end and it is a doozy but it was believable and I liked it. Overall this was a light refreshing romance that was suspenseful and well written. The characters were well developed and there was plenty of action. The only criticism I have of the book is the title, Desperate Girls, does not fit this story at all.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

First chair in a big case for her career, Brynn is under a lot of stress. When a serial killer she helped put away escapes from prison and murders the lead attorney that prosecuted his case with Brynn, she not only has her career but life to worry about.
Erik was an active Marine, Secret Service agent, but is currently working in the personal security private sector. He is built and used to high intense and dangerous situations, but not emotional and personal developments.
Brynn and Erik have let work dictate their lives but danger is about to reveal to them what they have been missing.

First in the new Wolfe Security series (there is a small character tie-in from the author's Tracer series) Griffin immediately drops the reader into murder and mystery. This tense start had me on edge, which the author was able to maintain to pretty much the ending.

Our heroine Brynn is a complete workaholic who is stubborn, brusque, and demanding. We get to see heroes, who are usually labeled "alpha", with these traits all the time, so it was refreshing to see a woman with such a forceful personality. However, Brynn veered, especially in the beginning, to oblivious, too stupid to live territory with her insisting she wasn't really in danger and therefore actively working to put her in more danger. Her demands and attitude got a bit repetitive in this regard and hurt her character rather than make her seem tough and smart.

The hero's calm, cool, and collective attitude made him seem smart and capable and when he would lose his grip a little in regards to his attraction to Brynn, it added some great steam to the story. His cool façade did mask his characterization a bit; we don't really get to know him until the later part of the book.

There is a large cast of characters that the author did a great job introducing but she failed to have them conversationally interacting. This would have been a great way to see and get to know the hero more; friendships are great showcases for personalities. The lack of conversation, in favor of courtroom scenes, gave this more of a dry feel.

With the lack of more emotional aspects, the book makes up for it in the murder mystery tone. The tension, wondering, and danger will keep your nerves taunt; the author excelled on the technical, realistic feel of security and the creepy factor of a serial killer on the loose. I would have liked a pov from the villain to add more depth, there was kind of an info dump that provided what felt like a pointless red-herring, and while surprising a last second drama that felt more tagged on than enriching.

The chemistry and romance is weaker but you'll want to sign up for the thriller aspects and tension. The author's writing has charisma and the series set-up will have me checking out the next in the series.

It is a mystery to me why this book is called "Desperate Girls" as there are no girls in it, desperate or otherwise. Instead it is mainly about Brynn, who is a very competent defence attorney, managing effectively to represent a client even while her life is in danger. It is also about Erik, one of her assigned bodyguards, who, apart from (of course) becoming romantically involved with Brynn, is very good at his job too. Erik and Brynn were sweet together, and the plot was coherent and reasonably exciting. The ending was a little coincidental and there was something a touch formulaic about the whole thing, but I enjoyed it over all.

Brynn Holloran is a tough as nails defense attorney working on the biggest case of her career when a serial killer she once helped put away escapes from prison and begins targeting all those who have wronged him. With the death of Jen Ballard, a local judge, mentor and friend Brynn’s boss, Reggie Gunn, hires Wolfe Security, one of the top personal security firms in the country as hired protection for his dedicated team. Brynn does not like the idea of a personal bodyguard, but she has no choice in the matter.

Erik Morgan is heading the team hired to protect Brynn and her co-council. Erik is a marine and former secret service Agent. He does not let distractions get in the way of his job performance. He holds himself to a higher standard and level of professionalism and takes his job in security very seriously, but Brynn is slowly chipping away at all of his defenses. Tasked with protecting Brynn is becoming a lot harder than he anticipated. Erik finds himself attracted to the pretty lawyer and a distraction like this could mean life or death. With a killer on the loose, Erik needs to keep his personal feelings out of the equation in order to keep Brynn safe.

With a budding romance on the horizon, will Erik’s defenses be compromised enough for a dangerous killer to get too close to Brynn?

Desperate Girls is the first book in the Wolfe Security series and so far, the series is off to a great start. I often times find stories in the Romantic Suspense genre to be either too much suspense with not enough romance or vice versa. I am happy to say the suspense and romance elements are done in equal measure and they are both done quite well. I really love the courtroom drama/legal aspect of the storyline too. However, it is not the focal point of the story. The suspense really keeps you guessing and there is a twist that was quite unexpected. I found myself glued to the story and never felt like any part was rushed. Laura Griffin really knows how to write a slow burn story that kept me engaged throughout and flipping the pages needing to find out what happens next.

I really loved the Brynn as a heroine. She is very put together and a beast in the courtroom, but her personal life is the direct opposite and in shambles. Her last relationship ended because of her dedication to her job and the long hours she put in to her workload often at the cost of her relationship. So, it was interesting to see how a budding relationship with Erik would turn out. Erik is the ultimate alpha hero. He is dedicated to his job, capable, and knowledgeable. He doesn't let anything stand in his way of getting the job done. I can see his dilemma with wanting Brynn knowing it can cause a distraction and as much as he tries to fight the feelings he has for her, he can’t help acting out on them. Other members of the Wolfe Security team we get to meet such as Jeremy, Hayes and Skylar are an added addition and although we don’t know much about them now, I, for one, can’t wait until their future stories are told.

Desperate Girls is a slow burn suspense that builds in momentum ending in a shocking twist I never saw coming. Laura Griffin’s writing style kept me glued to the pages as I craved to know what comes next. The suspense really kept me guessing up until the very end. Very well done start to a new series! I can not wait for more!

Note to self: I must remember not to get too attached to whomever Laura Griffin starts the first chapter of her books with. They're never long for this world.Sigh. Honestly, I should know better by now.In other (related) news: a new series from Ms. Griffin! Woot!I loved Desperate Girls (though I'm unsure as to where the title comes from...? Not going to spend much time on it, but it is a headscratcher. The cover sure is pretty, though...) Brynn and Erik were a great heroine and hero, each strong on their own but even better when working--or decidedly not actually working ;) --together. (Erik's "I knew I loved you when..." confession in the epilogue was awesome--it was the cherry on top of the book for me!) The story was a nice blend of romance and suspense; it didn't move their relationship along too fast to be believed, and the courtroom drama and murderer-on-the-loose bits kept the story going at a steady clip. There is a twist toward the end that I didn't see coming for most of the book, until I did (I was waiting for the other shoe to drop so hard, you guys! You just knew something was going to happen soon, but I wasn't quite sure what it would be...) and when I did realize what was happening, I legit gasped. Seriously, ask the two cats I startled out of at least one of their lives each. They're still annoyed with me. (Not a unique occurrence, so I'm not losing sleep over it.)Anyway, I'm drained. Brynn and Erik's epilogue vacation sounds like just what I need to help me recover... ;)For fans of her Tracers series, it is connected--Erik's boss at Wolfe Security is Mark Wolfe's brother. You absolutely don't have to have read any of that series' books to enjoy this one, but if you have, you'll appreciate the connection. I can't wait to read more from this series!Rating: 4 1/2 stars / AI voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

There is no down time with this book. It started out with a bang and ended with a kiss. I have been a fan of this author's Tracer series. This new series starts out really good. The main lead, Brynn is a strong female figure. Yes, it was a bit obvious with Brynn falling for her bodyguard, Erik but I didn't mind as they were good together. It would have been hard to resist a guy like Erik. The fact that he is a hand holder makes him that more irresistible. This book is not all just about Brynn and Erik. The storyline is good. It moves fast. There was a big twist that I admit that I did not see coming. When it did I might have had to re-read the moment. I can't wait to read the next book in this new series. You could say that I am "desperate with anticipation".
