About this audiobook

New York Times bestseller Jennifer A. Nielsen tells the extraordinary story of a Jewish girl's courageous efforts to resist the Nazis.

Chaya Lindner is a teenager living in Nazi-occupied Poland. Simply being Jewish places her in danger of being killed or sent to the camps. After her little sister is taken away, her younger brother disappears, and her parents all but give up hope, Chaya is determined to make a difference. Using forged papers and her fair features, Chaya becomes a courier and travels between the Jewish ghettos of Poland, smuggling food, papers, and even people.

Soon Chaya joins a resistance cell that runs raids on the Nazis' supplies. But after a mission goes terribly wrong, Chaya's network shatters. She is alone and unsure of where to go, until Esther, a member of her cell, finds her and delivers a message that chills Chaya to her core, and sends her on a journey toward an even larger uprising in the works—in the Warsaw Ghetto.

Though the Jewish resistance never had much of a chance against the Nazis, they were determined to save as many lives as possible, and to live—or die—with honor.

It was a pretty good book, and I felt it shed light on WW2 rather well. I do wish that the book ended at the end of the war, rather than two years before it though. I also wanted to see more of Rubin and ‘Helena’s’ relationship (I can’t remember her real name) and I felt the light on other characters (of any significance ) was a bit drained, as most of the writing is only speaking of characters either barely seen, or never seen at all. It’s a good book on the holocaust, and puts emphasis on people somewhat forgotten, and the fact that not all Germans are ‘evil’. Another note: when a death happens in this book , the author says it rather vaguely, but just enough as a sort of reminder. It’s a witty , and creative way to shed light on a time that was much harder than we may realize. This book isn’t something I would recommend to anyone who gets nightmares though, simply due to the trauma and horrific events of the past. Good for anyone looking for a good story, and needs to brush up a bit in history.

I loved this story, incredibly inspiring and a great story about what courage can do. I think when there is people who have the will and strength to do what they did that should be remembered.

The tension not only in story events but in the narrator’s voice kept me listening, finding chores that allowed me to continue listening.

Despite knowing the outcome for many resistance fighters from studying history, the author kept our hopes up for a number of characters and respectfully acknowledge the heroism of those loyal to the fight, who sacrificed their lives to save others.

If you’ve ever questioned whether the Jewish people in ghettos and camps fought back - this historically-based novel answers that without a doubt. Highly recommend.
