- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great story with an amazing narration by the author.
Really enjoyed it.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Probably 3.5 stars. The pace was just a tad slow for me and the way that the author tried to create suspense by dragging out scenes (e.g. when disclosing the contents of the bag and at the end where the TV footage is described) was just too long. It felt like a 90's TV game show where the author would drag and drag and drag it out until I got exasperated and found myself almost not caring anymore. It felt amateurish and boarded on being patronising. Perhaps a tad more editing (cutting the book by 5-10%) could've really made this a page-turner.
However, Something in the Water isn't a bad book. It was a good start as the author's first novel and I will probably read another once it becomes available. The story line was interesting, albeit very predictable. Again it had a 90's movie feel about it. The surprise ending wasn't really a surprise at all. However, I enjoyed the first person perspective (although I don't normally) and the author did a great job at describing the protagonist's feelings throughout.
The opening chapter is one of the best I've read. The opening line "How long does it take to dig a grave" simply grabbed me. It is a shame that this opening chapter was let down by by some of my criticism above.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So good ! So many twists and turns and so much suspense. Also really makes you think, “what would I do…”
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5An enthralling story, told through a vulnerable and contemplative first-person narrative. " What would I have done?" echoes through my mind.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I'm surprised by the low ratings, but tastes to differ. I loved this and had a hard time putting it down. Yes, Erin, the main character, is not always terribly bright with what she does, but she struck me as believably realistic. I loved the story, there were no lulls in the plot. Some say it was predictable, but I had actually predicted a different direction. I recommend this.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved every minute, twist & turns. Great book! :)
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I would like to thank LibraryThing and Ballantine Books for a free copy for an honest review.A shocking discovery on a honeymoon in paradise changes the lives of a picture-perfect couple. I found this book to be somewhat predictable. I didn't like the main protagonist. I thought she was very unlikeable and I didn't care about her at all. Even the plot was a bit unbelievable. The title is the best part of the book because it creates an interest but I was very disappointed when it wasn't something that would be exciting like a body or something you would expect from a thriller. The book also lacked twists that would keep you reading. I guess I should stop there and say that the book was not for me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well worth reading. Creative and intriguing . H h h
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It is written in the same style as an Alice Feeney novel. The surprises were a bit predictable. I’m really enjoying the audio books so I will probably “read” another of the author’s books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Brilliant story, read beautifully by the Author. Remarkable and had me not wanting to put it down and yet devistated at the ending. So many twists and turns, had me guessing what would happen next and completely unawares.
Highly recommend.
One of the best Stories i have come across.
Perhaps a follow on from this?

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I found this story too long winded with unnecessary information. Narrator's voice was monotonous most of the time.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A psychological thriller that lives up to its name. The very first chapter of the book has Erin digging a grave---for her husband. The rest of the book starts at the beginning when the couple was taking the vacation of a lifetime. He is a professional banker always unwilling to spend money and she is a successful documentary filmmaker. From chapter 2 one can begin to feel that something is not quite right. Good read! P.S. The author was an actress for one season on Downton Abbey. This was her debut novel.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I did not enjoy the book, it was repetitive and dragged on. Interesting idea, but found it....nagging at times.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story is captivating and thrilling. I kept listening every spare minute I had. At the end you keep wondering the same way the main character does. It makes you create your own version of the details and the events .
