About this audiobook

It is 1911, and Jean is about to join the mass strike at the Singer factory. For her, nothing will be the same again. Decades later, Connie sews coded moments of her life into a notebook, as her mother did before her. More than 100 years after his grandmother's sewing machine was made, Fred unpicks the secrets of four generations, one stitch at a time.

I really enjoyed this story. The interplay between the stories of the different generations, and then some surprises at the end make for a very enjoyable story.

The narrators are perfect. They have enough of a Scottish accent to lend authenticity while still being easy to understand to my American ears. The interplay between them adds interest.

I enjoy a good story that doesn’t need sex and violence to carry it. I will be looking for other books by this writer.

A lovely story going through time about the life of an old sewing machine, and the people who used it.

This is a great tale of life in the North, of human beings and their 'normal stories', their kindness, their meanness. As a collector of vintage Singers sewing machines this story is exactly what we, collectors, always say: "If only this machine could talk!..."

The historical references were very interesting. But the story line was not at all believable. Far too many happy coincidences.
