About this audiobook
After finding Jesus at a suburban megachurch, young Jamie Wright trades in the easy life on the cul-de-sac for the green fields of Costa Rica. There, along with her husband, kids, and the family cat, she intends to serve God and make converts. But she soon loses faith and falls into a funk of cynicism and despair. Fortunately, Knives the cat is there, looking on with just enough disinterest to make her laugh...and dare her to try another way.
That other way turns out to be telling the truth. She launches a renegade blog, Jamie the Very Worst Missionary, which against all odds soon wins a large and passionate following around the world. Slowly, she begins to see that being a "bad" missionary-awkward, doubtful, skeptical-can mean that you're just the kind of person someone else might be willing to hear...and that loving others is just as much about changing yourself as it is about converting them.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Thank you for being real. Loved everything about this book. Refreshing and insightful and thought provoking in the “I can be better in a less fluff and less pomp and circumstance kind of way!” I can give someone shoes if that’s what they need and they don’t have to be packaged in shiny paper with a neat little bow on top. I will listen and search out how my “donations and contributions” impact a community before just doing it to say I did it. Thanks for reminding us of this simple concept.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I appreciated the honesty and transparency shared in this book. I have never been a missionary or even been on a short term mission trip, but I found the perspective shared to be refreshing and convicting, aligning with concerns I have about the effectiveness and authenticity of the American Christian church. The language is raw and arguably filthier than necessary, which is probably how most people secretly describe me. But when we close ourselves off to things that make us uncomfortable, we take one step closer to becoming a Pharisee. I’m grateful for Jamie’s voice and validation that I’m not alone in this wilderness.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I knew this would be insightful, witty, and swear-y but I didn't know it would move me to tears, convict and yet still encourage me.
Engaging... the 5 hours fly by far too quickly. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5What a terrific, SPLENDID, funny, up-lifting, FRANK, well done memoir! I'm keeping this one to enjoy again and again. Thank you!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is indeed more a memoir than a theological treatise. Every chapter does lead to a point, however, and usually a good one. There, of course, is no point in disagreeing or arguing about the author's history and the lessons they learned. Sometimes though it feels like they are expanding their personal experience to draw conclusions beyond her own experience. For example, there are some swipes at short-term missions trips that are undoubtedly sometimes true but are not always true. It might be more effective to talk about what a great short-term mission experience could be like, than to just throw them all out as useless. (And the limitations/problems with short-term mission trips are not new, but calling them out in this book is a good reminder.)
Look as you probably already know she's swear-y. The thing is that sometimes it doesn't feel like she's doing for any other reason than it proves she's super edgy.
So why 4 stars? Cause it is interesting and provokative.
